2017 Winter Meetings: Boom or Bust?

Does the 2017 winter meetings live up to the expectation and hype we think we see coming?
Or does it fizzle with a few minor moves made?

I still think something big is coming. Not talking a big free agent signing, but a blockbuster trade with big names on both sides!

BOOM!!! Too many teams trying to get better for it to fizzle in my eyes. Although many deals could get done during the rest of the winter and outside of the meetings, which would make them a bit of a bust. I'm with you though. Something's coming. Not for my Blue Jays, but that's OK. I still love baseball as a whole even more.

After the Stanton trade and the Ohtani signing I wonder if teams are going to stay quiet and start jockeying for Harper out of next year's class. I'm sure Boston will try something, any time the Yankees burp the Red Sox have to try to counter, but everyone else may just hold their cards. I'm probably wrong. I hope I'm wrong. It just seems awfully quiet with a lot of self-generated buzz created by MLB Network.

The Red Sox have been talking trade with teams (and FA's) to acquire a middle-of-the-order bat all off season. If they do pick up that bat, it's not to counter the Yankees. If they lose their minds and acquire more than one, that would be countering the Yankees.

I did read that Boras is trying to pitch both JD Martinez and Hosmer to the Red Sox. Apparently they are shopping Bradley Jr also and would move Benintendi to center. I'm no Red Sox fan, but I would prefer Carlos Santana over Hosmer.

That's fair. For the record I think it is great. Rivalries in pro sports are virtually non-existent. I love that one feels that they have to counter the other. If more teams were like that maybe we wouldn't have so many mediocre teams in some sports.

Yep, and I've seen projections that say Santana will go for 3 years and $45-$50 million, while Hosmer's looking more like 6 years for around $130 million. Um...Ok.

I am a little frustrated at the Royals. I am seeing interest in Matt Adams, CarGo and Mark Reynolds. That seems to make no sense at all. If you are going to rebuild, get the kids in there and let them get the experience and go from the ground up.
IF they resign Hosmer, you can do better than the names above.

Overall, the winter meetings have had moments (Ozuna to St. Louis), but no big booms yet.

I think Boras may have over estimated the market for JD Martinez. I think teams are hestitant to get anywhere near the number Boras wants because so many deals over 6 years and/or over 200-mil end up blowing up in team's faces. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up back in Arizona on a 2-year deal with a third year option. Boston needs a middle of the order bat, but probably should be looking for a left-handed slugger (Hosmer, etc.).

I think I understand it. I wish my rooting interest (Tigers) would sign those guys to be honest. The kids you are referring to are not ready yet according to the organization. I feel rebuilds are accelerated when you can can take flyers on guys that you can potentially flip at the deadline. which is why I feel the Royals will do this way quicker than my Tigers. We are holding onto some hope that Vmart can actually play, Cabrera has a 26 year old back, and Fulmer didn't just have a surgery that can potentially derail his career. (TRADE HIM TO THE YANKEES ALREADY AND GET SOMETHING WHILE YOU CAN!)

Did the Cubs solve their pitching needs with DRew Smyly, Tyler Chatwood & Brandon Morrow? With the exception of Morrow the other 2 are a risk. Both have had Tommy John. Yes pitchers tend to throw better after. Anyway, Chatwood stats away from Coors looked good but i am not sold on him. I am not sure if Smyley will even pitch in 2018 after having TJ in June. Was really hoping they would trade Schwarber to the Sox for something. Would love that left handed bat behind Abreu.
Getting Cubs fans mad at me about comments on Chatwood & Ozuna has been fun on Twitter,

I think the Red Sox are trying to save their money for when Harper walks. What a division the AL East will be then...

No chance of Harper to the disgusting Bosox. He will either stay in Washington or--much less of a chance now--sign with the Yankees.

Nothing you're saying is absolute.

Well, it's safe to say that these winter meetings were an absolute dud compared to all of the hype coming in! After Ohtani and Stanton were set, the media blew everything up like the other 28 teams were going to go into a "video game" trade and free agency fit and we would have blockbusters galore!

Yeah. That, uh...didn't happen.
