What to do with the grizzled old vet?
Just started a Fictional League playing as GM only. I didn't run an inaugural draft so the rosters are as rolled by the AI.
Spring Training comes along and I invite along a number of minor league prospects, a couple of whom proceed to eclipse a couple of the veterans to the extent that I decide to include them in the opening day roster. The veterans, both pushing 40+ and on a fair whack of salary refuse to be demoted to AAA. My question is what do I do next in order to free up the roster slots? I tried shopping them around but all you get offered are similar ageing major leaguers which wouldn't get around the problem. I'm just back into the game after about 10 years away and unfortunately I see the option to "hire a hit man" has yet to be implemented. |

How big of a salary do they have? If they are not in your future plans, then just designate them for assignment and waive them and hope someone claims them on waivers. If you did this and no one claimed them, just eat the salary and move on.
The only other option is to keep them on the roster for the first month of the season and see if they actually can still contribute as part time/bench players. I have seen guys near 40 have productive seasons when used as platoon players. |

the single greatest thing you can do is learn not to put yourself in this position in the future.
at this point there are no good options.. if you need a warm body on the 25-man, keep them, otherwise drop them asap. nobody wants an old has-been. not even video game AI Last edited by NoOne; 09-20-2017 at 12:05 PM. |

i play fictional and just roll with whatever is there after 30 years, but if you take only the available jobs route, definitely look into their roster before accepting a job. choosing to do 'it' a specific way is still a choice. like it's my choice that i only play detroit and sometimes their rosters is jacked up when i start. after next year non-fiction detroit will be a nice clean slate, on the other hand.

My immersion and interest comes from replicating real life processes within the structure of the game. That means considering fan reaction, retaining loyal players within reason. Always competitive never tanking or tearing down the roster. Taking chances/opportunities that might not be justified with a strictly clinical approach. It's easy to be clinical in OOTP because there are few consequences. In that sense FM gets it better than OOTP.
Imagine real life MLB run like an OOTP online league. I think popularity attendance and revenue would suffer along with player performance, something OOTP cannot replicate because there is no data. We can make logical deductions though. I'd love to see a module in OOTP where player reaction to an online or solo league with rampant trading and roster turmoil was always go to FA, always make no-trade demands, always demand short term contracts and have zero loyalty no matter the personality. Fan loyalty would be volatile attendance unpredictable possibly to the point of boycott. Talk about a real challenge. How much is too much. ![]()

pretty sure winning is a much stronger correlation to finacnial success than anythign else.
there is a whole gamut of fan types - - hardcore to fair-weather, for a lack of a better word. the hardcore people are the ones into loyalty and love that bench player who really sucks at baseball when viewed with untainted eyes. the fair-weather, and most likely the bulk, are not that way. they like the team when they are "cool" not when they are junky. they don't care about loyalty.. .it's mostly superficial. their money adds up just like the hardcore fans and there are way more of them too. |

Agreed. If you have room for an expensive platoon/PH, then keep the vets on the roster. Otherwise, bite the bullet and release them.
