Free Agency, they all hate me.

I guess this is the place for potentially dumb questions. Why do high value players demand huge sums in negotiations then sign for half the amount with AI teams? For example Josh Donaldson wanted 30 million and was angry with me offering less then he signed with the Padres for 14 million. It is off-season one so my reputation is still poor, does that factor in?

to some extent the ai is given an advantage here... but only relative to effort and patience and no real repercussion or advantage from it.

early in FA if oyu try to low ball you only upset negotiations. the ai cna submit lower values and just wait it iout.. a human does not get to do this. probably a good thing, really. simple and doesn't have a negative effect.

you have to measure the info you have about those teams competiting in bids and guesstimate what they are even capable of offering.

you also have to guesstimate how long that guy is going to wait -- mostly based on disparity between the previous guess and current demand.

learn how much you can low ball an offer without upsetting them, and wait until that is in a viable range.

i have a set number i'm willing to pay.. if it doesn't get there, i let other GM's make a poor financial choice with a big grin on my face. just better for my future FA negotiations.

if it's my 1 target in the offseason for a needed position/role, i'm not losing that competition, of course. i am not up against a payroll constraint if i do something like that. (rarely am) but, in this context you cannot afford to pinch pennies in a maximized way... i won't wait as lng and if i pay a few more million a year, so be it.

oh, the quality of your team matters too.. or anything related back to various personality traits. - need for a winner? bad team? not a good mesh and you likely need to pay more than the average bidder to get that player.

That all makes sense, thanks for the enlightenment. I'll just assume they do not like my team or location for some reason. Hopefully OOTP can add some type of player agent system eventually.

in madden, if i recall, the weather was a facotr for some players, lol or was it just market size? ie some wanted to play for a big market, some preferred a small market... country preference vs urban preference basically. as if they live in the cities, lol... more likely some ultra rich, gated-community far away from teh noise and pollution.

no reason why ootp might not have that under-the-hood too.

they keep adding layers of sophistication, so it's not crazy to think smethign liek an agent dyanmic could be added too. or weather/urban area preferences etc.

I thought OOTP does something regarding how close a player is to his hometown.

Also, I thought that you can click to offer a contract, and you may see the message that another team offered a contract already. I thought that meant the player's demands had fallen enough to where the AI offer is being considered, and they would sign soon without a better offer.

I thought if you saw no message, the player demands were still too high. So I would just wait until the player said he got another offer before I would make my offer. Are you saying I could possibly wait longer to get a better deal?
