Makeup of the Minors - 2018 (IRL)
Baseball America just published the breakdown of the minor leagues, showing where players originate from Here is the info-graphic that came with the article...along with these highlights/bullet points:
- 29% of the majors is foreign born - 28% of the minors is foreign born - 75% of all minor league players were from draft eligible countries (US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands). - Of the remaining 25%, 80% were from the Dominican Republic

Years ago I used to joke that baseball fans rooting for "their city" were basically arguing over whose group of Dominicans was better.
![]() The DR has a truly amazing baseball culture. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that they can play 12 months a year, but that's true of other places also. Based on those stats the DR produces 1/6 as ballplayers as the US with roughly 1/25 of the population -- and not being part of the formal draft process, as you said. |

great post. I was always under the impression that the foreign born % in the minors was way higher than the MLB but it's actually less. Wow.

I feel Cuba could have the same potential if they weren’t communists.
