Assistant General Manager - Needed/not Needed?

This seems too easy, which is why I'm probably overthinking it.

If we have complete control and do not assign any tasks to the Asst GM, Is there any benefit to having one?

Something about seeing it vacant gives me pause. Thoughts?

Not needed.

I have one in order to:
1) spend the same money as the AI
2) stop the prompt to fill the vacancy

Yeah, there’s room for innovation with this role. Maybe next version. I’d be interested in collecting ideas about how to evolve the position, particularly in a manner that allows increased interaction, if opted.

the big advantage as far as I can tell is when you are trying to sign a player either via FA or on your team for extention it does help to have a good reputable GM in place. Helps when signing management positions as well.

I use it to help smooth sim because of all the minor league injuries. I track about 50-100 prospects myself but I cant be bothered with the other couple of hundred.

Assistant GM if you hire one who has same thinking as you and or your he is kind of helpful in trades. Sometimes when he objects it means you can get a low prospect or some cash out of the team.

It would be helpful if maybe he would point out Waiver guys, or FAs that the team could use. Like, if I'm simming and someone releases a SP that he likes, it would stop the sim.

They are very much needed. Who else do you blame when it all goes wrong?

Speaking of front office positions, is the scouting director really necessary? He doesn't seem to do much except make recommendations on draft day. And I usually ignore his suggestions.

Yes, otherwise your only source of scouting info will be the OSA evaluations.

I use my Assistant GM to handle minor league staffing - that's something that I don't like to stay on top of.

If I have a guy that I'm invested in, I'll promote them as I see fit.

It's mainly #2 for me. I sign the cheapest guy around and then let him sit on his hands just so the notification stops bugging me.

i use the position to find a job for a great former player. The fact he never likes anything i do as Gm, but it doesn't bother me. He does have a job of promoting/demoting minor league level players so as GM i don't need to deal with that, so the position does have value to me.

The skills of your scouting director (i.e. great at identifying tools players, or amateurs, etc., makes this position pivotal in your decision making.

Having let a good rule V eligible player slip under the radar today, I think an Asst. GM bringing this to my attention would be an awesome mechanism to have in place.

Well, if he's not very good at his job then I guess he isn't terribly necessary and ignoring his suggestions might be the best call. On the other hand, if he's not very good at his job, unless you get awfully lucky, there is a decent chance you won't end up being very good at yours either. Largely because you will be operating with insufficient/not terribly accurate information regarding players skills and potential. (In that case I would suggest finding yourself a better scouting director.)

Now, if he is good, and you are nearly always ignoring his suggestions on draft day, you might just want to fire yourself. He's necessary, but you might not be.

This is what I do as well, although I don't delegate any responsibilities to the person in the role. I basically treat the role as a "Special Assistant" job that real life teams often give popular ex-players. I suspect the ex-player I currently have as my Assistant GM spends most of his time golfing.

if it's a non-position, you should edit his age on occasion. a nice quick click to see history of your franchises RS/RA/ERA/record etc. not that it isn't available eslewhere.

i did that with my mil coaches in a league recently. i thought it was cool to see the entire history of my mil teams right from personnell screen by clicking names. think it gives an extra column of info compared to "team" history page?

it actually helped me adjust my later draft picks to improve overall mil winning %. i could tell be rs/ra if i needed to shift to more batting or pitching after the better potential-mlb prospects were taken.

Well, someone has to clean the litter box you left in the office for Pugsy to use.

Ok so everyone is pretty much in agreement that the position is essentially worthless if you do everything yourself
