How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!
After one too many rounds of ale, the cocksure and brash captain Elcid Barrett put out a call to all able-bodied Canadians - come join my baseball team! We'll pay well, and give you the best accommodations near Antelope Park here in Halifax.
And thus begins my all-Canadian theme team, the Barretts Privateers. We cranked out over 130K in PP in the Entry Pool thanks to the Live rewards cards and max offense park factors, then doubled that from selling all those rewards. The next result is a fearsome crew of Canucks set to lay waste to the Rookie League. Rotation: Fergie Jenkins, Rube Vickers, and Russ Ford are the most fierce components of the rotation, with Mike Soroka and Kirk McCaskill filling out the quintet. (ignore Vickers' nationality, Wikipedia says he was born in Ontario) Bullpen: As long as the starter goes 6 innings, the Privateers are cruising to wins with Jeff Zimmerman, Paul Quantrill, and John Hiller handing the final frames. James Paxton, Jordan Romano, and Rowan Wick are the hard-throwing middle relievers, with Rheal Cormier and Reggie Cleveland as craftier long men. Infielders: Captain Barrett sort of neglected to get anything resembling a middle infielder, so he's had to convert Corey Koskie and Brett Lawrie from third to second and short, respectively. Justin Morneau will be learning third to give Joey Votto first base, and Russell Martin behind the plate. George Gibson backs up Martin in a handy tandem, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr backs up Votto 1B and DH versus lefties duty. Outfielders: Again, Barrett's budget couldn't cover a proper center fielder, so Larry Walker shifts from right to try and handle it. That leaves room for George Selkirk in right and in left, Jeff Health against righties and Jason Bay against lefties. DHing against right-handed pitchers is Matt Stairs, with Michael Saunders backing up Walker and Selkirk. I kept the park factors at max offense just for a lark; let's see if that was a mistake. Half my lineup is learning a new position anyway, so I'm considering this week a wash. Now...the team is currently entirely Canadian. As soon as the team backslides, I'll expand my scope to cover non-Canadians who play for Team Canada (hi Ernie Whitt and Freddie Freeman), and then inductees into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. But those would be the last of Barrett's Privateers. Last edited by tehsuigi; 10-05-2020 at 10:16 PM. |

Update: I keep finding Canadians I missed before! Bunk Congalton replaces Matt Stairs as a more contact-forward DH vRH, and I'm waiting for someone to list a Rich Harden to join the pitching staff.

Rookie League Champions!
Leading the league with over 1,000 runs scored and most offensive categories, the Privateers showed themselves to be a true lumber crew. They needed all that offense, in part because their defense was league-worst (hopefully that's better next season; maybe I invest in better 3B options?). The team can add Freddie Freeman in the offseason to bolster the squad's offense as well. On the pitching front, Fergie Jenkin's 22-4 record and 2.95 ERA even with that defense just shows how much of a stud he was. John Hiller's 37 saves and 2.56 ERA was also solid. Harden and Ford (20-9) were both solid contributors as well, with Soroka and McCaskill probably competing for the fifth rotation spot next year. The Privateers finished the season at 113-49 to lead the Rookie league, and took on the wild-card winning Fuquay Guard in the Division Series. The Privateers needed all 5 games to get past them, with the Guard's center fielder Bobby Tolan earning MVP honours for his herculean effort to get the team advanced. The Subleague Series fell in the Privateers' favour in 6 games over the Barnstoneworth Ottershaws. Privateers' third baseman Justin Morneau won MVP honours with a .365/.517/1.000 slash line - of his eight hits, four were home runs. Finally, in the Rookie Series, the Privateers took on the top team in the NC, the Burnaby Bayhawks. This cross-Canadian competition was over in short order, with the Privateers taking it in 5 games; the lone Bayhwaks win was a shared shutout between Matt Garza and Jeremy Fikac. Morneau again wins series MVP. Season end awards: * Catcher Russell Martin, first baseman Joey Votto, third baseman Justin Morneau, and center fielder Larry Walker all won their respective batting awards * Fergie Jenkins had a unanimous win in the Pitcher of the Year competition. 351 K's over 277 1/3 innings. * Joey Votto is your AC MVP with a .308/.431/.647 slash line, with 46 HRs to tie teammate Walker for the league HR crown. 8.5 WAR. On to the Stone League!..and time to plow all these PP into packs to try and get Eric Gagne! |

Stone League - One Fat Ball Stole Us In
104 wins should be enough to get you promoted. That said, we would up 26 games behind the Narshe Returners who went 130-32 with a mostly Live mission crew. So, to the Wild Card game we went. Fergie Jenkins gave his all, but yielded 4 runs over 6 innings on 10 hits to a lineup that was 2/3s live cards, and the Barretts offense was stymied by Steve Parris and live Craig Kimbrell. No promotion, just frustration. I'm saving the 36K in PP to see if we can't rack up more. That Gagne card may get cheaper over time, and it's easier than trying to pack it. Freeman is going to get some reps at 3B vRH so we improve our right-side defense with Morneau moving back to 1B (Justin's ZR was -10.1 at 3B!!). |

Stone League 2 - To Catch Her Took The Antelope Two Whole Days
Our runs scored went down by 140, our runs allowed went up by 80, and we lost two more games. We coasted to a 5 game lead to win the division and move up to Iron. We bested the Key West Stone Crabs 3-1, then the Hamilton Shots 4-3, before losing to the Tortuga Bats in 7 games. Alack. Not sure if I'm going to be saving up PP for other CBBHOF members, but I'm going to give this squad a week to figure it out before going pack-crazy. |

Iron League Update
So we seem to have stalled out a bit in Iron, in part because our defense up the middle is utter traaaash. So we are adjusting plans a smidge and adding two Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame members and former Blue Jays - CF Devon White and SS Tony Fernandez! That way Koskie can move back to third, Morneau can head to first, Votto to DH, Freeman to bench, and Saunders to reserve roster. EDIT: Welp, I kinda forgot to bid on that SE Tony Fernandez, so I'm still short a proper MI. EDIT 2: okay, got the silver Fernandez, and also blanked that White is not a CBBHOFer, it's Lloyd Moseby I'm thinking of. Gonna keep him anyway. Last edited by tehsuigi; 11-01-2020 at 11:05 PM. |

Shipping up to Bronze!
The improved defense helped drive the Privateers to a division title and a Division Series win in a sweep, before getting bounced in the SLS in 5 games. So off to Bronze we go! Tim Wallach and the SE Tony Fernandez are the next cards I've got my sights on. Here's hoping we can stick it here. |
