N00b ? #3: What Happened to the Babe?

Ran a 70 year replay overnight to see what happened as I try to figure out the ruleset.

Babe Ruth comes into the league as a pitcher--and not a very good pitcher at that--and never does much, never topping 150ish ABs in a season, and fading into obscurity.

Any ideas on what rule option combination might be causing that?

Yeah, I'm spending a lot of time in the manual. These questions are after looking there. Any ideas?

The answer is in the page i linked to

First, define whether you want the game to recalcuate player ratings before each season based on their real-life statistics. Alternately, you can leave things up to OOTP's engine,
Assuming you didn't recalc, the game doesn't know Babe Ruth was "Babe Ruth". It just knows (depending on when you started) that he was a player who went 2 for 10 with 23 innings pitched as a 19 year old - and had a lot of potential. Potential that went unfulfilled

Nice, so this is a quiz? Cool. I always did OK on quizzes.

What I was looking for was some guidance on the pros/cons of either

* Recalc player ratings based on real stats after each year. My concern there is that it would really depress the impact of the in-sim performance.

or

* the mixture of Neutralized Stats and Career Stats/Remaining Peak Seasons.

Given there are 5 different variables in the 2nd choice, I was hoping someone could share some thoughts about what the tradeoffs are in reality.

And, as a follow up, what the impacts of those settings are on "fictional" players, which is lurking in the back of my mind--my understanding is that players I add don't have real stats, so how are they evaluated?

I promise, I am reading the manual. And experimenting. But I'd rather only spend 100 hours setting the world up instead of 1,000.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "depress the impact of the in sim performance." Recalc will ensure the Babe is the Babe. He will start his career as a pitcher and end it as a hitter. You can select either 1 year, 3 year or 5 year recalc. If you look at Babe's 1921 season, season, 1 year recalc will give him the best chance to match his 59 bombs. 3 year will average 1920, 1921 and 1922, so he might hit a few less, but should still hit a lot. 3 and 5 year recalc will soften a lot of the harsh real life ups and downs a player experience during his career. Both are good choices if you don't want real life injuries that shut down a players performance in real life to crush and OOTP players performance. I recommend leaving OOTP development on in combo with recalc, unless you have retire and miss seasons according to history activated.

Now if you don't want to use recalc and simply use the OOTP Development engine. You can ensure the Babe is more like himself by selecting base fielding role or potential on entire career. You might have to make sure manually that the Babe's primary position is listed as outfield in 1919 or 20, but once you do, he should perform a lot more like he did in real life. If his position is based on 1 year or 3 years he will remain primarily a pitcher his entire career. If using the development engine I would base pitching stamina/role on entire career as well. Otherwise, Nolan Ryan, Pedro, Curt Schilling etc. will probably be lifetime relief pitchers.
