Have You Ever Released a Player With More Than 1 Year Remaining?

I just released my favorite player and am wondering who else has ever released a player with more than 1 year left on their contract. He was owed $5 million this year, $8 M next and $10M the final year. 3b still solid on D but was struggling offensively and with having 2 1b and another player coming off the DL tomorrow i could not find a trade partner. Now i'm looking at unloading high contract aging players so i have more $$ for arbitration eligible players next season. My team is going to be broke for years.

Done it plenty of times, usually to a declining player in his 30s that's no longer worth holding onto.

Before I do it though, I always explore the trade market, even eating all his salary (which I will be doing anyway). Usually score at least a fringe prospect or lotto ticket this way.

I've done it a few times with former stud players that I had to give a long deal to re-sign knowing those last couple years would be wasted money.

I've had to do it in my current save because I have a controlling owner who signs players to contracts without my knowledge. He's given 5+ contracts to players that I was planning to let watch in free agency. Really annoying.

I don't do it often. I've disabled the right to refuse minor league assignment in my league, so quite often I use those guys as minor league depth instead.

Although i didnt try absorbing all, i went up to 90%. Part pf the problem is is that Mid-June tends to be a slow period. So they team i am playing now just signed him to a league minimum deal. They are in last and among the worst 3 teams in the league.

I usually just put them in the minors as injury backup since I'm paying for them anyway. Make sure they aren't taking a prospects at bats.
I actively avoid signing contracts that I think may not be worth the entire length of it. I won't generally sign a SP to a multi year deal that takes him over the age of 35 at the end of it.
I always put in team option buyouts as insurance on the final couple years also in case of decline. Sometimes they come back and ask for a higher buyout, I meet demand since it is lower than eating their whole salary 5 years down the road.

He refused a minor league assignment. i put him on Waivers, then DFA'd him after trying every single team with cash available to trade him to.
He was due 8/8/10 the next 3 years including this year.
