Step-by-step guide to set up different types of leagues?

Hi all,

New to OOTP as of yesterday, although I've been lurking for a bit to try to learn more about it before making the leap. I come to sims via APBA and WhatIf Sports. Had some fun after purchasing yesterday to do some quick historic replays of the 1984 season until my Cubbies won the World Series. Finally!

Next step ... forgive me if this resource exists somewhere, but I wasn't able to find it. I've read about a lot of you all running really cool leagues, but I wonder if anyone has compiled explanations as to what they've set out to achieve and how they've gotten there. For example, I set out to do THIS so I set THIS to THAT and checked THIS and unchecked THAT. After the first season I needed to go back and do THIS, etc etc. Something that might provide some inspiration and instruction, so I don't feel like I'm completely on my own. Kind of a paint-by-numbers deal.

Right now I'm thinking about setting up a league as if MLB began in 1980, with historical rosters to that point, no historical stats, and then GM-ing my Cubs from that point with trades and drafts and injuries and development that could take the rosters and the league in a completely new direction from that point on. Also planning on keeping the league structure from that era (2 leagues, 4 divisions, 26 teams) so that once expansion happens in real life we'll have a deeper pool of players. Not sure about foreign leagues.

But I'd love to see what other people have set out to do and how they got there, and maybe use that as a guide to help learn the ropes here.

Thanks! Looking forward to playing and learning more.

The manual can be a little out of date at times, but you should be able to get a good overview of what's possible and what everything does.

Advanced League Setup

Using the Historical Wizard

Customizing the Game

You'll probably want to turn League Evolution off (Options Tab) so that the game doesn't automatically expand or change anything in your league.

Edit: linked the v22 manual instead of 21
