LA Kings

Preseason LA Kings report.
The King’s got a small make over right before the pre-season as the new General Manager, as within days of his arrival, four players had new contracts signed; as well as arrived in the town. Cameron Gaunce was the first to arrive, an older defenceman brought in to bring some experience to a very young Kings team. Although missing a lot of NHL experience, with only 37 NHL games, the move looks questionable. Second to sign, but last to arrive, was the 41 year old dangling winger from Russia, Maxim Afinogenov, hoping to fill a depth role.
Anthony Peluso inked his name to a new deal for the kings, committing to bringing his defensive style of play to the kings. The biggest free agent brought in for a depth role was the signing of Michael Grabner, a talented penalty killer with some flair and danger, as he is always a risk to the opposing power play. The kings will be hoping to get 30 points from him.
The preseason didn’t go as planned, with the kings winning only 3 out of 7 games, getting outscored 21 to 15, giving a -6 goal differential over 7 games. Jeff Carter would fall awkwardly in the first game of the pre-season against the coyotes and pulling his hip. Iafallo and Kempe both would get banged up in the second game, leaving three off the top 6 six players sidelined for about two weeks.
It did have its bright side though, as four different rookies played, with Vilardi recording 5 points in his 7 game stint, earning a top line spot for now. Anderson would record 4 points in 5 to be second in defensive scoring, only behind the team leading Drew Doughty. Grabner and Afinogenov both had strong preseasons, recording 4 and 3 points, with Grabner averaging just over 16:00 minutes a game.
With the roster set for the season, there is a couple players looking to make their debut, Austin Strand and Matt Villalta the most likely. Iaffalo and Kempe both should return before the season opener against the OIlers. Kaliyev, Byfield, Turcotte, Kupari, Dudas, Thomas, Durzi, and Fagemo all are starting the season in the AHL.
The lines for the opening night will most likely look like this.

October update

November 1st.
The LA Kings had a surprisingly good October, winning 6 games total. The total record for the entire month would be 6-4-3. Athanasiou looked to be the brightest light this month, as he is on pace for a career year, scoring 7 goals and 5 assists in 13 games to lead the team, mostly skating on the top line RW. Quick recaps of the games:
Oct 5th Away Vs EDM. 3-1 Win.
Oct 8th Away Vs CGY. 2-1 Win.
Oct 9th Away Vs VAN. 2-1 Win.
Oct 12th Home Vs NSH. 3-4 SOL.
Oct 13th Home Vs VGK. 3-2 Win.
Oct 15th Home Vs CAR. 2-4 L.
Oct 17th Home Vs BUF 2-3 L.
Oct 19th Home Vs CGY 5-4 Win.
Oct 22nd Away Vs WPG 5-6 OTL.
Oct 24th Away Vs STL 2-6 L.
Oct 26th Away Vs MIN 3-4 L.
Oct 27th Away VS CHI 1-0 W.
Oct 30th Home VS VAN 1-2 SOL.
The Kings picking up atleast one point in 9 of the 13 games in that month was good enough for second in the division. Following the scoring winger Athanasiou in the team is his line mate Adrian Kempe, who has 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points in 12 games, having missed the first game of the season. Rookie Vilardi has 9 points in his first 13 games including 4 goals, playing very well on the second line with Dustin Brown and Alex Iafallo, fourth and fifth in team scoring. Matt Roy leads the Defence with 5 points so far, Rookie D-man Mikey Anderson has 3 points in 7 games. Quick and the Newcomer Villalta would split the net; and both would play very well. Quick goes 3-2-1 with a GAA of 3.13 and a SV% of .915, not his best, but still strong stats on a defensively struggling team. Villalta has a record of 3-2-2 with a SV% of .937 and a GAA of 2.12, a very strong start for him. It seems likely they’ll share the net for atleast the next month.
Drew Doughty has been very disappointing so far, with only 3 points in 13 games and a -5 rating, as well as Jaret Anderson-Dolan, who has recorded no points in 10 games. Grabner and Afinogenov are rotating into the lineup, neither bringing much offensively. But both are playing solid defensively. LA’s shot blocking was rather lacking this month, with their goalie facing 40+ shots in 6 games, and only under 30 shots in 3 games out of the 13.
Dustin Brown scored his 300th
Shea Weber records 1000 GP
Ryan Suter records 500 A
Travis Zajac records 1000 GP
Claude Giroux 3 months (Torn rotator cuff)
Malkin 3 months (torn Hamstring)
Dzingel 6 months (torn UCL)
Morgan Rielly 1 game suspension (illegal hit to the head)
Nick Ritchie 1 game suspension (illegal hit to the head)

Both suspensions were against the San Jose Sharks. Brady Tkachuk would be the player of the month for Ottawa, scoring 16 points in 11 games. Carter Hutton would go 7-1-0 on the month and earn the goaltender of the month, recording a .958 SV% and a 1.36 GAA, and two shut outs.

November update.

November was not as great for the King’s as October was, winning only 3 games all month. Adrian Kempe would step up this month, leading the team with 22 points on the season, along with his other winger Athanasiou who recorded 21 points.

The kings record of 9-13-5 puts them last in the Pacific. Leading the team in scoring with 12 is Kempe. Rookie Vilardi continues to light the lamp on the second line, recording 18 points and being third in scoring, Veteran winger Dustin Brown being fourth in points with 16. Kopitar recorded 14 points so far, playing top line but with a slump. Carter, doughty, and Iafallo being the last three to pass ten points so far.

Anderson-Dolan has been the most disappointing so far, with no points in 20 games, unable to find chemistry or anything .
