Historical Team Assignment

If I want all players to debut in their historic year with their historic team is it enough to have the setting 'Automatically import historical rookies' turned on? My goal is to start all new players with their historic, but to then allow history to diverge, with the teams disposing of players, trading, etc. as they wish.

Yes but you also need to go to your League Settings> Rules and then unclick "Enable Amateur Draft" this will ensure your historical rookies would enter the league on their original team.

You will find them in the off season and they would need to be assigned to different parts of your organisation as you see fit.

If you have minor leagues on I believe the rookies will import in the year they entered the minors.

I hope this helps.

Thanks. I've now made sure that Amateur Draft is turned off. Now we'll see if anyone ends up being a star for a team they didn't really play for.

If you want players to develop much like they did in real life, just with - possibly - different teams, then you are on the right track, and use recalc with development off. If, however, you want players develop somewhat differently, look into incorporating the player development engine.

This is how I play. I really like it. More players spend time with the "right" teams and there's no draft for the human GM to cherry pick based on real life knowledge.

Don't get excited about the years when your team gets 12 or 15 first year players. What it means is the real life team called up everyone in the farm system who could fog a mirror looking for someone who could play and none of them could!!!

This is how I'd like to do it. Just because they were great in the real world doesn't mean I necessarily want them great in this alternate reality. I'd rather let the gods of chaos determine their future path. What settings do I need to turn on/off to allow them to develop organically according to the game engine?

Sounds like you want to go 100% development engine. If so, I would turn off recalc. If you're going to turn off recalc I would base pitching stamina on entire career. Reason being, if you do so you will ensure guys like Curt Schilling, Nolan Ryan, Pedro Martinez etc. don't end up as career relievers due to starting their careers in the pen. You can also base fielding on entire career.

How do you turn off recalc? I have text that seems to indicate recalc is taking place, but I don't see where to turn it off.

In your picture it appears as if you already have it off. It's one of the options you select during league setup. Looks like you chose to use the OOTP development engine. Doing so turns off recalc. If you decide things are a little too whatif for you with only the development engine, keep in mind that recalc and the development engine work very well together.

I'm in in my 10th year of this replay. Does that mean I can't change the development options? If the way I have it set up now allows the players to drift from rigid historical data then I am fine with it. My goal is not so much to recreate history as to let it play out organically.
