Blackhawks 30's Historical Challenge - changes in League
Hello, I am currently working my way through the BlackHawks' historical challenge - finish in first place once within 11 seasons. Just finished third season, where I lucked into a Stanley Cub championship. But the team still finished in third place 22 points behind the Rangers (...again). This is going to be tougher than I thought.
Anyways, in real life, transitioning into 1931-32, two of the 10 franchises suspended (Pittsburgh/Philadelphia and Ottawa) due to the depression and poor attendance. The players from these two teams were dispersed to the other eight teams, with the understanding they would be returned once the franchises came back. Ottawa came back the next season (for which you have a separate Historical Challenge), but the Pirates/Quakers never came back. Anyways, I just started the 31-32 season. I am in the middle of the Amateur draft, which only had three players with real value. I am drafting 4th and again got lucky to draft one of those three players. However, there is nothing on the schedule for a reimbursement draft. Are 20% of the eligible NHL players simply sitting out for the entire season?? Some of those players are really, really good - like King Clancy of the Ottawa Senators. I don't see any of these players as free agents either (where the available players are slim pickings as well). Thanks, Pete |

When answering this question, could you also please answer another question for me??
If playing the 1966-67 season, and transitioning over to the next year - one would see the "Original Six" league transform into a league with 12 teams - the "Original Six" and the "Second Six". How are the rosters for these six new teams populated, as many of the players would have existing roster slots on the "Original Six" teams???? Thanks for the help (as always). The product may be too addictive ![]() Pete |

As a follow-up to my original question (or a third question now) .......
I am learning the product better, and found that King Clancy is still in the 31-32 season. He does not show up in Free Agent Centre. But, I do have the option of offering him a contract (for double the highest salaries of other players) if I choose to. My first thought was this would be too much cheating for my satisfaction. Because, I could basically cherry-pick the best players from both of the other teams to (finally) catch the Rangers. On the other hand, if I choose not to sign any of these players (due to perception of cheating), will the AI managers of teams like the (hated at this point) Rangers be able to sign players like King Clancy during the season ??? Thank you again, Pete |

When Ottawa leaves the league, the players are all released to free agency and can be assigned to any team. The team has to rebuild its roster by signing new players when it returns to the league, they don't get their pre-hiatus players back.
In the 1967 (and most other) expansions, there's an expansion draft (unless it's turned off) that populates the new teams. |

Ok, that is very good to know. I suppose the same thing will happen after the last season of the WHA as well.
I can see the players when I look at the Free Agents list under the Rosters option within the League menu. However, many of the best players do not appear in Free Agent Centre from my team's menu. How are the players that display in Free Agent Centre determined?? Thanks again, Pete |

There will be few/no free agents visible in historical games because they're almost always assigned to a team. The "Contracted but Signable" filter option will show the signable players (i.e., without NHL rights) if you're in control of a team, but it won't help if you're unemployed.
