A team lost a good player for the year with a concussion that arose from shaking hands at a charity event. Not sure how that happens, must have been one hell of a handshake.

I'm assuming the code just randomly pulls an injury and joins it to an off the field event even if they don't really match up well.

I had an Iron Man (and likely future Hall of Fame) player hurt himself while arm wrestling in a local bar. Had never had an injury in his career up to that point- and he was a well established veteran. He remained durable and played into his early 40's but after that was always good for at least one or two nagging injuries each season.
He was a fan favorite- and apparently a bit too fan friendly for his own good.

I briefly did a Dynasty that started in 1871 and in the span of two months I had two separate players get hit by a train. It might have actually been the same guy, twice, I think, because the first time I'm like 99% certain it was, somehow, only a day to day injury for like a week.

Incidentally, Charlie Hough once injured himself making a handshake and Steve Sax managed to break his third base coach’s thumb with one. It’s a weird, very rare occurrence, but of all the rare off field events this is one with a grain of truth to it.

In the 1800s and early 1900s there were a lot of strange things, especially when players would drink. Look at the strange death of Ed Delahanty. He got kicked off the train, and either fell or jumped off a bridge into the Niagara river.

Concussion though? Ha ha, still one helluva a hand shake, like the old cartoons where they person gets slammed on their head from side to side while shaking hands.

So I was just watching a video about urban transit, because I'm a nerd, and I was actually reminded the entire team of the Dodgers is named after trying not to get hit by a train, basically.

There have been some pretty strange real-life injuries

Dobie Moore from the early days of the Negro Leagues was shot in the leg by a jealous husband as he was climbing out the window.

John Smoltz burned himself ironing the shirt that he was wearing at the time.

Glenallen Hill hurt himself having a nightmare about spiders.

Sammy Sosa hurt his back sneezing.

To be fair that last one is believable. I have some powerful sneezes. About once every other month I sneeze hard enough to make my right arm go numb.

I'm assuming the code just randomly pulls an injury and joins it to an off the field event even if they don't really match up well.
There are six types of off-field injuries: throwing, running, collision, fight, illness, and undisclosed. I'm fairly confident that throwing injuries involve the hand, wrist, and arm, while running injuries involve the foot, ankle, leg, and knee. Apart from that, I don't know. I suppose collision injuries would involve the upper body and the head. Fight injuries could potentially involve the entire body, as would illnesses. Undisclosed injuries are a mystery - I suppose those could involve the entire body as well.

The "shaking hands" off-field injury is coded as a collision injury. Not sure how you collide with someone while shaking hands - I would have expected that this would be a throwing injury. Go figure. So that's how you get a concussion from shaking hands. The "little old lady" off-field injury is also a collision injury, although there you can at least imagine that the player was hit by a vehicle while helping the little old lady cross the street.

I'm pretty sure Joe Morgan sprained his arm while patting himself on the back.

I've pulled muscles in my ribs and back from sneezing and coughing. I don't recommend it.
