Getting stuck in "PbP without pause" mode

Every once in a while, while I'm watching a game play out, it enters "PbP without pause" mode and I can't seem to break out of it. I start spamming the ESC key, without any luck, and then I try hitting the "Options" menu while spamming ESC, and eventually it breaks out and I'm back to having to hit "1" to continue. I'm trying to figure out, why does it switch to "PbP without pause" mode? I must be hitting something accidentally. And why does it seem so difficult to break out of that mode? Is there a way I can disable it? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Don't spam the ESC key. That toggles it off and on.

Just hit it once and wait to make sure its cleared.

I find what helps for me is to wait until close to the end of the play and then press esc. Pressing esc early does nothing when it gets stuck like that.
