The Rockies' Baseball Horror Show
“The Rockies’ Baseball Horror Show” Modern baseball’s horror feature Rockies’ hopes sink wildly deeper Owners have failed to win, or plan it Leaving us trying to understand it Oh oh oh, at the Rockies’ Baseball Horror Show Don’t want to go, oh oh oh To the Rockies’ Baseball Horror Show The Colorado Rockies have made it official by firing manager Bud Black, as team ownership chooses to pass the blame for their poor decision-making of the last half decade (or much longer, depending on who you ask) down to the lower levels of their system. The team has also named 49-year-old Raymond “Doc” Castle as the team’s new GM, with the intention that he will manage the team until Black’s replacement can be procured. Castle inherits a total disaster, with the Rockies currently sitting at a miserable 7-34 (.171), 20 games back in the NL’s West Division. They lost last night to the Rangers in Texas by a 2-1 margin and are 2-9 this month, and they’ve already had a 10-game losing streak, an eight-game losing streak and two six-game losing streaks this season while staking their claim as potentially the worst team baseball’s seen in the modern (or any) era. It’s honestly difficult to imagine this team sinking deeper into baseball purgatory than they already have, but these are the Rockies, and they’ve shown over the years that when you don’t think they can get worse, to misquote Ian Malcolm, “[The Rocks] find a way.” For now, Castle has said he plans to call up closer Anthony Molina (0-4, 9.20 ERA, 2.37 WHIP) and lefty reliever Jefry Yan (1-3, 6.91 ERA, 1.88 WHIP) from AAA Albuquerque as bullpen reinforcements, and 2B Tyler Freeman, 1B Aaron Shunk and SS Esquiel Tovar are coming off their rehab assignments. The Rockies’ farm system is notably bereft of talent when you get much deeper than #14 prospect Charlie Condon, who is considered to be an extreme development risk in a system full of them, and though they have a solid pick in July’s upcoming rookie draft, it will take more than a few miracle picks to elicit any real excitement from the fan base. Who the team will be able to lure into the vacant managerial position is a gigantic question-mark as well ... it’s a thankless role in an organization run by owners, the Monforts, who have made it clear time and again that they have little interest in modernizing their system. But here’s to Castle being the “Doc” that can find a prescription for success here in Denver, because without it, this team may just need to be allowed to flatline in peace.

Colorado Rockies (7-34) at Texas Rangers (21-21) Bot 1st: Marcus Semien hits two-run homer. Texas 2, Colorado 0 Top 2nd: Kyle Farmer grounds into 5-4-3 double play, Sean Bouhard scores. Texas 2, Colorado 1 Bot 2nd: Jonah Helm hits solo homer. Texas 3, Colorado 1 Bot 3rd: Corey Seager hits three-run homer. Texas 6, Colorado 1 Bot 7th: Corey Seager hits line drive double, Ezequiel Duran scores. Texas 7, Colorado 1 Bot 7th: Josh Jung hits line drive single, Corey Singer scores from second. Texas 8, Colorado 1 FINAL: Texas 8, Colorado 1 W: Jack Leiter (3-2), L: Kyle Freeland (0-6) POY: Corey Seager A rough night for our Rockies. Freeland left after four innings and 68 pitches, giving up eight hits and six runs with one strikeout, no walks, and we were outhit 11-4 ... only Jordan Beck (two hits) and Sean Bouchard (a hit, a walk and a run scored) showed any offensive life. Jefry Yan, in his first game up from the minors, did have two solid innings following Freeland, walking one and striking out four with no runs against him. May 14, 2025 Colorado Rockies (7-35) at Texas Rangers (22-21) Top 1st: Ryan McMahon walks, Brenton Doyle scores. Colorado 1, Texas 0 Top 1st: Ezequiel Tovar hits line drive single, Mickey Moniak scores. Colorado 2, Texas 0 Bot 2nd: Josh Jung hits two-run homer. Colorado 2, Texas 2 Top 4th: Owen Miller grounds out U3, Ezequiel Tovar scores. Colorado 3, Texas 2 Top 4th: Brenton Doyle hits line drive single, Michael Toglia scores. Colorado 4, Texas 2 Top 5th: Ryan McMahon hits two-run homer. Colorado 6, Texas 2 Top 9th: Hunter Goodman hits groundball single, Michael Toglia scores. Colorado 7, Texas 2 FINAL: Colorado 7, Texas 2 W: Antonio Senzatela (2-6) L: Patrick Corbin (2-3) POY: Antonio Senzatela If you’d just watched today’s game you’d have no idea why we’ve only won eight games all year. We dominated from the jump, and Senzatela had a quality start, allowing just four hits, a walk and two earned runs, striking out three. We outhit them 8-5 but were still sloppy on defense, with a pair of errors. Hunter Goodman had two hits, a walk and scored a run, while seven players in our lineups hit, everyone getting on base at least once except for Adael Amador. Tyler Kinley pitched two innings with a strikeout, no baserunners, improving his ERA to 6.87 after a very rough start to his season. May 16, 2025: Prior to the start of today’s game against the Diamondbacks on the road, we officially got word that a pair of starting pitchers have signed with us on minor league contracts. The first was 30-year-old Connor Johnstone, a two-star groundballer who has never made a major league start, while the second was 32-year-old Noah “Thor” Syndergaard, a neutral pitcher who hasn’t played in the majors since 2023. They both may find their way up to the majors shortly to give our beleagured pitching staff some room to breathe, but for now both will stay with the Isotopes in Albuquerque. In other news, we’ve found our new manager. David Ross, who hasn’t managed a game since being let go by the Cubs after finishing 83-79 in 2023, has signed a two year deal with us at $750,000 per season, and the 49-year-old is going to have his work cut out for him.

Colorado Rockies (8-35) at Arizona Diamondbacks (24-20) Bot 2nd: Gabriel Moreno hits line-drive single, Eugenio Suarez scores. Arizona 1, Colorado 0 Bot 3rd: Corbin Carroll hits line-drive single, Pavin Smith and Ketel Marte score. Arizona 3, Colorado 0 Bot 3rd: Gabriel Moreno hits line-drive single, Corbin Carroll scores. Arizona 4, Colorado 0 Top 4th: Jordan Beck hits line-drive single, Hunter Goodman scores. Arizona 4, Colorado 1 FINAL: Arizona 4, Colorado 1 W: Corbin Burnes (3-1) L: German Marquez (1-7) S: Kevin Ginkel (3) POY: Corbin Burnes A pretty ho-hum affair, we managed to keep them scoreless after the third but a hell of a lot of good that did. Jonathan Beck’s RBI single was our only offense, but Henry Chivilli did a good job out of the pen, with 2.1 innings and no hits, just two walks and two strikeouts. Hunter Goodman scored off a walk, and we were outhit 8-4. May 17, 2025 Colorado Rockies (8-36) at Arizona Diamondbacks (25-20) Top 1st: Ryan McMahon hits flyball single, Brenton Doyle and Michael Toglia score. Colorado 2, Arizona 0 Bot 1st: Ketel Marte hits two-run homer. Colorado 2, Arizona 2 Top 2nd: Mickey Moniak hits two-run homer. Colorado 4, Arizona 2 Bot 2nd: Geraldo Perdomo hits flyball single, Gabriel Moreno scores. Colorado 4, Arizona 3 Bot 2nd: Ketel Marte hits three-run homer. Arizona 6, Colorado 4 Bot 3rd: Wild Pitch! Eugenio Suarez scores. Arizona 7, Colorado 4 Bot 3rd: Garrett Hampson hits flyball triple, Josh Naylor and Trey Mancini score. Arizona 9, Colorado 4 Bot 3rd: Pavin Smith hits line-drive single, Garrett Hampson scores. Arizona 10, Colorado 4 Bot 8th: Eugenio Suarez hits three-run homer. Arizona 13, Colorado 4 FINAL: Arizona 13, Colorado 4 W: Zac Gallen (4-5) L: Bradley Blalock (0-3) POY: Ketel Marte We showed signs that our offense might not be completely DOA, but once Arizona got going they were dominant. Ketel Marte batted in five of their 13 runs, and eight of their runs came off homers from him and Suarez. We did steal SIX BASES though, as our players kept trying to will us back into this game on the basepaths. Brenton Doyle had two of them, bringing his season total to six, and he had a hit, a walk and a run scored. Moniak led the way for us with two hits including his fourth homer of the year. May 18, 2025 Colorado Rockies (8-37) at Arizona Diamondbacks (26-20) Top 2nd: Owen Miller hits three-run homer. Colorado 3, Arizona 0 Bot 4th: Josh Naylor hits flyball double, Eugenio Suarez scores. Colorado 3, Arizona 1 Bot 4th: Gabriel Moreno hits flyball double, Ketel Marte and Josh Naylor score. Colorado 3, Arizona 3 Bot 10th: Geraldo Perdomo hits groundball single, Pavin Smith scores from second. Arizona 4, Colorado 3 FINAL: Arizona 4, Colorado 3 W: Kevin Ginkel (1-1) L: Seth Halvorsen (0-1) POY: Merrill Kelly We keep finding new ways to lose painfully ... blew a 3-0 lead, held a 3-3 tie through five and a half scoreless, and then let them score the pinch-runner in the tenth to steal the game from us and complete the sweep. We outhit them 9-6, and Owen Miller’s three-run homer was his first longball of the season. Jefry Yan got through another great inning of relief and is still unblemished through 4.1 innings since getting the call-up, and he, Chivilli, Kinley and Halvorsen made it through 4.1 innings combined with just two hits, two walks, three strikeouts and the unearned run. But they’re taking a beating innings-wise, and we have ten more days in a row before our next rest day. We’re optioning Tyler Freeman back to AAA to make room for Noah Syndergaard, who is coming up as a starting option, while David Ross works to juggle our bullpen the best he can over the next week and a half.

Philadelphia Phillies (28-18) at Colorado Rockies (8-38) Top 1st: Wild Pitch! Bryson Stott scores. Philadelphia 1, Colorado 0 Bot 1st: Ryan McMahon reaches base on E7 error, Sean Bouchard scores. Philadelphia 1, Colorado 1 Top 3rd: Trea Turner hits solo homer. Philadelphia 2, Colorado 1 Bot 3rd: Brenton Doyle hits flyball double, Jordan Beck scores. Philadelphia 2, Colorado 2 Bot 3rd: Michael Toglia hits groundball double, Brenton Doyle scores. Colorado 3, Philadelphia 2 Bot 3rd: Ezequiel Tovar hits line drive single, Michael Toglia scores. Colorado 4, Philadelphia 2 Bot 3rd: Adael Amador hits line drive single, Ezequiel Tovar and Kyle Farmer score. Colorado 6, Philadelphia 2 Top 4th: Johan Rojas hits groundball double, Edmundo Sosa scores. Colorado 6, Philadelphia 3 Bot 4th: Hunter Goodman hits solo homer. Colorado 7, Philadelphia 3 Top 5th: Bryce Harper hits solo homer. Colorado 7, Philadelphia 4 Top 5th: J.T. Realmuto hits groundball single, Kyle Schwarber scores. Colorado 7, Philadelphia 5 Top 7th: Brandon Marsh hits two-run homer. Colorado 7, Philadelphia 7 Bot 7th: Brenton Doyle hits solo homer. Colorado 8, Philadelphia 7 Bot 7th: Ezequiel Tovar hits line-drive flyout to left, Ryan McMahon tags up and scores. Colorado 9, Philadelphia 7 FINAL: Colorado 9, Philadelphia 7 W: Anthony Molina (1-0) L: Orion Kerkering (3-2) S: Scott Alexander (1) POY: Brenton Doyle This was a great game for us offensively, as we notched a dozen hits ... though we let them hit just as many. Brenton Doyle had a double and a solo homer, his fifth of the year, and Goodman hit his seventh. Even Amador, with his miserable .143 average, got in on the hit-parade with a hit and two runs batted in. Most important, however, is that after batting around in the third and scoring five runs, and then subsequently blowing that entire lead, we actually managed to find a second wind in the bottom of the seventh and hold that lead the rest of the way. Now if only we can build on this and win back to back games for the first time all year. It’s sad that two in a row would be noteworthy but that’s where we are right now. May 20, 2025 Philadelphia Phillies (28-19) at Colorado Rockies (9-38) Bot 1st: Ryan McMahon hits groundball single, Sean Bouchard scores. Colorado 1, Philadelphia 0 FINAL: Colorado 1, Philadelphia 0 W: German Marquez (2-7) L: Aaron Nola (2-7) S: Seth Halvorsen (2) POY: Aaron Nola This one was intense, you don’t see a lot of 1-0 shutout wins at Coors! But we got the lead in the bottom of the first and held it thorugh a 4-4 pitchers’ duel. Aaron Nola was named player of the game because he lasted 7.1 innings with four hits, two walks and 10 K’s for the Phillies, but we kept them off balance all night. Bouchard had a hit, a walk and a run scored to lead our offense, and McMahan batted in the winning run. That was a hell of a win, a real confidence builder. May 21, 2025 Philadelphia Phillies (28-20) at Colorado Rockies (10-38) Bot 1st: Hunter Goodman hits solo homer. Colorado 1, Philadelphia 0 Bot 1st: Hunter Goodman hits solo homer. Colorado 2, Philadelphia 0 Bot 3rd: Adael Amador hits groundball single, Mickey Moniak scores. Colorado 3, Philadelphia 0 Bot 4th: Mickey Moniak hits line-drive double, Michael Toglia and Owen Miller score. Colorado 5, Philadelphia 0 Top 6th: J.T. Realmuto hits three-run homer. Colorado 5, Philadelphia 3 Bot 7th: Adael Amador hits two-run homer. Colorado 7, Philadelphia 3 Top 9th: Johan Rojas hits groundball single, Brandon Marsh scores. Colorado 7, Philadelphia 4 FINAL: Colorado 7, Philadelphia 4 W: Jefry Yan (1-0) L: Ranger Suarez (1-1) POY: Adael Amador Amador seems to finally be coming out of his slump ... tonight he had the leadoff spot in our hitting rotation, and he hit twice including just his second homer of the year, batting in three runs! He’s still hitting just .160, but after a slump that complete it’s hard to find your way out, so it’s important to acknowledge he’s putting in the work. Syndergaard gave us four solid innings with three hits, a walk and a strikeout, but he was wearing down and needs to ramp up his pitches before he’s ready to face batters for a third time. Yan, however, earned his win with a walk, two strikeouts and his first run allowed this season, giving him a 1.53 ERA through his first 5.2 innings. We have one more game left against the Phillies, and then three against the Yankees this week before hitting the road again. May 22, 2025 Philadelphia Phillies (28-21) at Colorado Rockies (11-38) Top 1st: Bryce Harper hits solo homer. Philadelphia 1, Colorado 0 Bot 1st: Ryan McMahon hits line-drive single, Sean Bouchard scores. Philadelphia 1, Colorado 1 Top 6th: Bryce Harper hits flyball double, Alec Bohm scores. Philadelphia 2, Colorado 1 Bot 8th: Michael Toglia hits solo homer. Philadelphia 2, Colorado 2 Top 10th: Bryson Stott walks, Brandon Marsh scores. Philadelphia 3, Colorado 2 Top 10th: Wild Pitch! Max Kepler scores. Philadelphia 4, Colorado 2 FINAL: Philadelphia 4, Colorado 2 W: Orion Kerkering (4-2) L: Tyler Kinley (0-2) SV: Jose Alvarado (8) POY: Zach Wheeler We didn’t make it easy on them, but Philly prevented the sweep as our depleted bullpen was forced into an extra innings fight once again. We outhit them 10-6 in the game but stranded too many baserunners over the course of ten innings to stay in this one when the chips were down. Michael Toglia led the way with two hits, a walk, a run and an RBI thanks to his sixth homer of the season, and Jimmy Herget deserves note for lasting three innings in relief with just a walk and a strikeout, throwing 37 pitches to keep us in this one.
