Losing Markus

Losing Markus is going to be a bigger loss than people are thinking. It's been going down since it's sale a few years ago. With things happening this year much to the disgust of some fans, we maybe looking at the beginning of the end

That's what I'm wondering, as well - will there even continue to be an OOTP team, and if so, for how long?

Well, Markus' post explicitly answers that question

Twenty-seven years is a long time for anyone to do anything ... I've been on these forums off and on for twenty-two of those, and a lot has changed for me in that time. I feel confident that the team he built will be able to keep things going in the right direction, eventually every torch has to be passed ...

I think this sentiment is naively optimistic. Rarely has ever a passing of torches resulted in better products. I mean, I don’t wish for bad things to happen, but I’m being realistic.

And most products in the tech sphere don't last 27+ years. Eventually Marcus was going to burn out or need to move on, what happens with the game beyond that is out of everyone's control. The way I see it, we have the game he created, and if he was able to build a team good enough to keep the game going, then we're all going to be lucky to keep playing it. If not, the game will fade away like so many other things I liked twenty years ago that don't exist now. Right now I have OOTP 25 for as long as I find value in continuing to play it ... and I have a ton of respect for Marcus for what it took for him to build it.

If that's naive, fine ... but realistically, we've all gotten alot more out of this game than we had reason to expect.

I could play OOTP 25 for the rest of my life and be happy, but this game is too big to fail.

You are fun at parties, I suppose!

OOTP isn't going anywhere. I want to play OOTP 30 one day, and I know I will. Zero doubt.

Oh Good God.

OOTP changes over the years that meant the "end of the game".

Moved to a DIPS model (the death knell in 2004?) OOTP still here 20 years later
graphics (lets not waste time listing all of these)
MLB license added.. MLB interference will ruin the game.
perfect team
Going to SI
Leaving SI
Going to Com2US
Having to remove some leagues due to licensing
Some users "favorite stat" not in the game yet. Taking ball and going home
No women or women's league (with the argument, by some users, women will be in MLB soon anyway, so why not?) more

This is only a partial list of how OOTP was at it's end.

Chicken Little is alive and well in 2024 and is not going anywhere in 2025.

Based on my interactions with the rest of the members of the OOTP development team I am extremely confident in its' future.

Can add Com2US releasing MLB Rivals, another MLB licensed game with graphics OOTP can only dream about. Though being F2P is an interesting choice.

I don't see the game "dying" anytime soon, but I also unable to figure out Com2US.

Absolutely I am. The parties I attend, people tend to want to hear the truth over B.S. Markus, you have created the best sports game of our time if not ever. I been with you since Season Ticket came out. But history has shown more often than not when the creator of a product separates himself from a his product, the product diminishes over time. Nobody now with the game has what's inside your head, but I understand. I'm going to say it...So, ever since you sold it to Com2US the product has not improved. This year is really a cluster of errors. I hope the ones in control now will bring it back to what it once was. Look, it just my opinion & some people see like I do & some don't. One of my best issues is the buddy system in the FOUMS. Some of us don't dare suggest something without being trolled harshly. The Good Ole Boy very much exist in these forums....Just like you did to me by giving my opinion. You don't now me from a different speck of dust on the ground but you swatted me down like a fly. And after I've spent several thousands of dollars on YOUR product you put me down...Thanks, bc now I understand the culture here bc they now follow their leader in insults

I will probably be doing that as it stands right now. I've also previewed several options besides OOTP as well with very very good results

The developers would probably rather not say, but I suspect that Markus has deferred to the team more in recent years, with no loss in quality of the product. In other words, give him credit for foreseeing this day would come, but not until he was comfortable with those running the show day-to-day. That's my impression. And I have confidence in the team to preserve the 95% that we like and tinker responsibly with the other 5% each year, as has been the case since I've been on the bus. I have to chuckle at the melodrama of the whole product suddenly crumbling after 27 years of work. That may be giving Markus too much credit - or rather not enough credit for creating a platform that is both stable and customizable well into the future.

Whenever things happen, the worst case scenario is usually the safest bet. My attitude is that I fully expect OOTP 25 to be the last OOTP, and any OOTP beyond 25 will be a welcome surprise. I'm just some random internet stranger, so for whatever it's worth, I'm placing zero expectations on the rest of the team.

If you want to wait and see, then wait and see...but this thread is absolutely pointless for any purpose other than being an ass. So maybe don't be surprised when someone responds in kind.

It is kind of a hilarious development recently IMO where people go to the forums of a game and insult it, the developers, and/or the people who post there and then be surprised when people who enjoy the game (and have for years) defend it.

These forums have always been a place where constructive criticism is welcomed and encouraged. But "constructive" is a key component. If you just want to bitch there is a very active Reddit community that would be much more useful for that purpose.

agree with this - except at my age - there's not a whole lot of seasons left anyway.
