Best Strategies for Player Development Focus?

I’m looking for advice on optimizing player development focus for players in my organization. I know there’s no one-size-fits-all answer since "it depends", but I’d love to hear about your go-to strategies or what’s currently considered “meta” in the community.

Are you talking about just how to manage prospects through your system or using the Development Lab?

I've never been meta and have lots of failed strategies and the occasional lucky outbreak.

I believe a few years ago Orcin had a really good system for how to move guys through the system and so did Westheim. If you want a good read look up Westheim's racoons.

From Sweed:

These are only assumptions based on the screen shots. I could be way off, but...

Are you having the AI do your promotions or are you doing them yourself? The way I see him going from A, A+, AA, A+, AA I'm guessing it's the AI that is yo yo-ing him up and down? His stat lines aren't showing much and it looks to me like he's being rushed through the minors and never being allowed to succeed at any level before getting that next promotion. In your words "he has not performed at all", his WAR with HS stats filtered out is -1.7, and yet he is moving up, why? Being a HS player I would have had him start his third year still in Rookie ball and see some success in his WAR and OPS+ (using what's available in your screens) before moving him up to A ball.

I control all player movement in my organization. I am very patient and allow my talented players time to learn and have success before moving them up. Since I don't rush players I don't know if this guy is ruined or not. Before promoting any player, and especially big time prospects, I use the "ratings relative to" option to see how my scout thinks this kid stacks up skill wise in the level he's in and the next level up. I combine that "relative to" report with
the player's stat output and then make a decision on promotion.

Your player's first year at Rookie ball would have had me excited, and, like you, I would have started him out at R in season two to verify the first R season. With his K rate, drop in OPS+, and negative WAR there's no way I promote him to A ball in season two. He stays at R until his performance improves. What I can't see in your screens is his babip. Maybe in year two R ball he was hitting into bad luck and had a terrible babip? If so that falls into my "look at relative to and stats" before promotion rule where I never base promotion on only skill or stats. A young HS #1 overall pick hitting into bad luck that is shown by a bad babip? I leave him at R and let him have some success. He's young and has lot's of time, there is no rush, IMHO.

I think the only solution is to either try to trade him if you can get something of value, good for you, or drop him all the way back down to A ball, or at least back to A+ and let him play until he shows success or he ages out of the level.
