Question about Trades involving Retention

If I make a trade with a team for Player X and he has current season remaining contract as well as an agreed upon extension already in place, and the trade involves retention of salary, would that retention also cover the extension, or only the remaining balance of current deal that expires at end of current season?

I believe just current deal but would love to know if I am wrong.

Retention only applies to current contracts and player options. Team options and extensions that haven't started yet aren't covered.
