Just wondering if anybody in here that plays OOTP is interested in working in baseball ops one day and plays the game through that lens, or do you play the game simply as a fan?

Just as a fan. Of baseball, that is, not MLB. I have soured on professional sports for a number of reasons and I would never want a job in that industry.
That said, I have often thought that OOTPB would indeed be a useful training tool for wannabe GMs. Up to a point, that is, because it does not include the unsavory stuff of reality that bothers me.

In case you are wondering, it's the pursuit of ungodly amounts of profits, while fending off the pursuit of ungodly salary demands from players and their agents, while dealing with greedy and grubby corporations, while partnering with betting companies that are harming society and the game, while negotiating with unscrupulous and inept politicians over public tax revenue, that constitutes the unsavory stuff. Baseball and its fans are secondary, merely tools for making money.
That's why I couldn't work in baseball ops.

Just as a fan. I personally do not think that this game (or any really) has the level of depth to adequately prepare you for such a job. Take the latest trade that sent Devers to SF. That was a deal based on personalities. OOTP cannot model that. All the ai in OOTP is really capable of is acting from a financial perspective. Also, the financials in OOTP are surface level on purpose. It is designed for a gamer to come in and be able to play and have fun without being bogged down in economic minutia.

For two years I worked as a scoreboard operator and an official scorer for a local High A affiliate. I have 100% sympathy for official scorers after my experience. It is a job that is never satisfactory to either team or the front office. Even the local media and radio broadcasters want to have a say in your decisions as official scorer. While I did have moments of “fun”, being able to watch minor league clubs for free, it’s not a job for the faint hearted.
