How do you create a draft pools of historical players?
I would like to create a league of Fathers and Sons. To do so, I need to create a draft pool from a wide historical spectrum. When I tried to create a fictional league, I could only see fictional players and could not figure out how to build a draft pool with historical players. Help Please? Thank you.

LansdowneSt - clarification
LansdowneSt, are you saying I could make a list of an entire team and import them all at once? (I hope it is.) The year is obviously the year you want the players' stats imported with him, but could you add the three-letter team code and import them directly to the team?

Yes. Import all at once and go direct to the team. If you want an easy way to build the list, go to your /stats folder. The second column in the Master.csv is the import ID for every player. If you want modded NeL imported players use the mod’s NeL stats. folder. Now you need to build a txt file (but can use an Excel or Google sheet you eventually save to a comma delineated csv the. export that to a txt file and have three columns. The ID. Then the year of import. Then the team OD. Build that in a spreadsheet where it is easy to do. Export it. Then when you go to the individual player import wizard instead of inserting the code of a single player choose to mass import. Navigate to the file. Select it. Complete the import wizard info regarding make bad and weakens etc.
The import. Always make sure everyone made it over. Don’t want someone missing due to a typo!

"It woiks, Melvin, it woiks!" Jerry Lewis
Thank you, LansdowneSt. I tried it, and it worked. I had already made spreadsheets of all the MLB and NeL teams, even those I wasn't planning to use initially. I copied, cut, and pasted the Yankees files into a modified spreadsheet that contained just the lahman id, first and last names, and left an empty space for the year. I had to look up the best year to use for each player, which was the most time-consuming part.
When I had that, I modified the list again, using just the lahman id and the year I wanted the game to use. I converted the spreadsheet to a text file, and I was ready to try importing it. I opened OOTP and tried importing the list. Eureka! I saw a list of 50 historical Yankees appear in the free agents file. I then signed each player to the Yankees. (See below.) This was also time-consuming, and it was getting late, so I thought I'd try a simple experiment using team names as well. I took your sample list, which I recognized were all Red Sox, and added BOS to the other data. (You had helpfully already provided the years.) Since it was a text file, I copied it and placed it in the appropriate folder. Tried the import and, again, it worked flawlessly. (See below.) I am including some screenshots to better illustrate the process. First, the two Yankee lists; I included names because I knew that for teams with which I was less familiar, it might be hard to ascertain the player's name from just the lahman id. Second, a sample of the Red Sox list with space for the year. Lastly, screenshots of how the imports looked in the game. |

On tbe time consuming signing of the free agents, I just open the player editor, left hand side of the bio tab, very bottom. Those fields let you just put them on the team without a literal “signing”.
![]() The best is you do these steps once and you have a list every year so it is a fixed sunk cost once.

Keep in mind too that you could literally take the entire Master.csv, keep those two columns, save as a csv, save as a txt then import every player and their every year into the FA pool. When you are ready for your Mantle, just scroll to the M's by last name, pick the ones with the highest stars, look at the OPS in the editor and pick the best import (rather than scanning baseball-reference) and then do the same for pitchers but looking at their WAR in the pitcher editor. So go to all the Whitey Fords, pick the highest star ones, and keep the one that is the highest WAR. Once you go all the teams populated, just go to the League Settings screen and delete all free agents to clear out the guys that didn't make it.
If it helps, since I know you've enjoyed the NeL players, here are all them ready for import into the game. You just need to select the mod's historical.database.odb for that import.

What is the shortest/quickest way to get every player's credited years of MLB-level service? I'm willing to give the Master.csv thing a try. I already have the rosters I want for every team, MLB and NeL. That should shorten my time; I can alphabetize each team's roster, and zip up and down the master list looking specifically for each name. I won't have to look up each player individually because I already have their names.

I looked for the tab you mentioned in the player editor option, but all I found was this. Is this a Mac vs. PC issue?

You are on the bio tab. To see his projected ops go to batting tab there. For P the pitching tab. Note it will take league and talent into account so if choosing the version of the guy with the highest ops or war, it is a relative value but still highest is what to want regardless.
Service time requires by player editing.

I made an import list, modeled on your sample, and imported it into a new game successfully. (See below.) The number of players and pages in the free agent list is pretty overwhelming. But at least, now I know how to import players. Thank you, LansdowneSt, for your advice and assistance.
Now I'll return to my original plan, creating a unified league of All-time, All-Star Teams for each franchise, starting in 1950, and made up of the 16 MLB teams plus 16 NeL teams. The NeL teams' rosters will be taken from the OOTP Negro Leagues Teams game, supplemented by the MyNeLExportList. We'll see what happens. |
