Can someone post a close up of those San Antonio Brewers caps from 1976 or just a different photo that shows them closer up?

I collect baseball hats from current and past Texas Rangers affiliates and have never seen a good shot of those caps. Thanks in advance!

Here's a slightly larger version of that team photo.

Request for Some Minor League Photos (perhaps in Major League Uniforms)

This request pertains to career minor leaguers, but they all made it as far as major league spring rosters:

Eugene B. "Gene" Cook, 2B (1973 Giants spring roster)
Richard "Rick" Earle, P (1973 Yankees spring roster)
Mark Giegler, 2B (1973 Tigers spring roster); later, was a scout for the Rangers.
Stephen M. "Steve" Harvey, P (1972 Brewers spring roster)
John Bryant Jackson, P (1972 Reds spring roster; 1st round draft pick)
William Edgar "Bill" Meyer, 1B (1962 Athletics spring roster)
Gerald "Moose" Morawski, P (1964 Colt .45s spring roster)
Ronald D. Patterson, P (1962 Athletics spring roster)
Kenneth M. "Ken" Perry, 2B (1976 & 77 Mets spring rosters)
Edward P. "Ed" Riley, P (1976 Expos spring roster) (NOT the Ed Riley from Massachusetts)
Bennie "Ben" Sandlin, OF (1962 Tigers spring roster)
Richard "Dick" Taaffe, P (1963 Twins spring roster)
Robert M. "Michael" Weaver, OF (1970 Indians spring roster)
Michael N. "Mike" Whitson, P (1970 Senators spring roster)
Thomas "Tom" Willwerth, P (1963 Colt .45s spring roster)

Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give me on this.

Spring Rosters

For the most part, I've assembled a database using hard copies which I've collected over a long number of years. Sources like baseball yearbooks - Street & Smith, Sporting News Yearbook, Athlon. Also used annual April issue of Baseball Digest. For on-line resources, SABR membership allows me to use a service called Paper of Record, which gets me to old issues of the Sporting News, which had spring rosters back in time. I believe that tnfoto, the moderator of the main OOTP photo thread, is in the process of hosting some Baseball Digest archives, so there might be some hope for finding some of those April issues on-line there.

I need to distinguish invites to spring training from what I have. I have the published rosters around spring training time. Sometimes additional players get added to the roster. Also, there are non-roster invitees who also arrive in camp, and may appear in spring training games with the major league team.

Ken Perry et al

Topps recently put up a shot of Perry, but I can't locate it. There was a JD McCarthy of Perry, I've posted it below.

As to the others, I can assure you Topps did not shoot them (there's a small chance they did but the images were never put into a file in the vast photo archive room, but given the era, I doubt it).

Earle (at the right, with Scott McGregor and Coach Cloyd Boyer) is from an eBay image post. Giegler (not Geigler), Morawski, and Sandlin are from team publications

This is part of an ongoing quest, I know. It turns out that Bobby Gene Sanders (or Bob, or Robert) was in the Mets' farm system in 1964. It was his last professional season, but he was a Class AA all-star in Chattanooga the year before. Any long shot chances that there's a Mets image of him (he was the first African American to play in Chattanooga).

Thanks always to those to seek!

Harley McNeal

There was a pitcher named Harley McNeal who was on the 1933 Boston Red Sox spring roster, so I'm guessing that he is the mystery guy who is second from left in the group photo above. Attached is a photo of Harley from when he was on the University of Michigan baseball team. His right ear seems to stick out the same way as the mystery pitcher.

Just noticed that you included the markings on the back of the photo, and one can almost read the surname "McNeal" on the back, so it definitely is McNeal.

Gary Howard

I'm skeptical about the claim that this fellow was a scout. There is a database of scouts on the Hall of Fame website at the following URL, and he is not listed among the Howards:

Search | Diamond Mines

I'm communicating with the person in charge of the database to see if part-time scouts are omitted from the database. I'll post again when I get an answer.

If you use that database to check players, you'll see that the scout who signed Ken Oberkfell, for example, was Steve Vrablik, not Gary Howard. Perhaps Gary helped in some way, but I don't see any evidence that he was actually a scout.

Similarly, as to his being a player. If he had been in the minor leagues, it is likely that he would have been in the baseball-reference.com minor league database, and I don't find him there.

I began a newspaper search on Gary Howard and baseball, but it is such a common name that it simply resulted in hundreds of hits, and I just don't have enough to go on here.

Scouting Database

The answer I received is that there are some part-time and associate scouts in the database in cases where they have been corroborated by media guides or other official documents. So I guess it's possible that Gary Howard could have been a part-time scout on a less formal basis which just didn't enable him to make it into this particular database.

Amazing how much this mirrors my dad's baseball days in St Louis...he played against my dad who also played against Reuss (also Kenny Holtzman) and was in the Khoury League at the same time as Howard....

Yes...associate scouts will do some solid work but the area scout always gets the credit

I checked Baseball America Directory from 1988, 93 and 95 and each year lists some 20 scouts and supervisors for Cardinals.. No one named Howard.

Found a link and a story about him that has all of the facts that you include. It is less than clear how officiall he was. At least there's a photo:

thats the trouble i ran into.

i know i found a newspaper article from the early 90s where he was in charge of holding a tryout for the cardinals in sikeston, missouri (where he lives now)

not sure if that helps or not,

the cardinals hold a regional caravan each year, last time i spoke with him he told me to find him and hed get me back "stage" to meet everyone. he even did an interview on the news a year or two ago about the caravan. hes known in town for being with the cardinals just how he is is unclear
