What was that about not coming back for a week?
That photo of Pat Skrable in a Phillies uniform had to be earlier than 1971.
Pat Skrable was in the Phillies farm system from 1967 to 1969. In 1971 he was with the Brewers AAA affiliate.
He had four years at the AA and AAA levels with the Phillies, Royals and Brewers organizations, but never reached the major leagues. The photo of him in a Phillies uniform is probably either from Spring Training or from a late 1960s Phillies Yearbook section of their top prospects in the minor leagues. He might have been on the Phils' 40 man roster, but that's the closest he got to "The Show".

While the 1975 Chi-Sox red pinstripes uniform Mike Squires is donning is an out-and-out copycat steal of the uniform the Phillies have used, with slight variations from 1950 onwards, it's still a lot better than the black short pants look they would use shortly afterwards, around 1976-1977.

Mythical pic request - Angels edition

Hey there,

With all the efforts around ID'ing the Vault folders and issuing white whales, I thought for sure I had seen and could locate one but alas - nothing.

Does someone have a color pic (TV preferred or other I suppose) of Bill Stoneman in his last year in the bigs with the Halos in '74? Had a forum contributor offer a quasi - distance action shot years back and thought I would see if I could locate another pic. Thanks!

It's Pat Skrable 1971.

He was in the Phillies' spring training camp in 1971. He was photographed by Topps. He was traded to the Brewers for Wayne Twitchell just before the season started (see the third item on the screencap from Twitchell's Baseball Reference page). When asked for ID's here I don't post them unless I'm verifiably certain. Thanks.

Skrable was also part of the blockbuster trade between the Red Sox and Brewers that sent Jim Lonborg to the Brewers and Tommy Harper to Boston. Supposedly Skrable retired in the off season rather than report to the Red Sox; there are certainly no pics of him in a Red Sox uniform.

From Baseball-Reference's Jim Lonborg page..
.
"October 10, 1971: Traded by the Boston Red Sox with Ken Brett, Billy Conigliaro, Joe Lahoud, Don Pavletich and George Scott to the Milwaukee Brewers for Patrick Skrable (minors), Tommy Harper, Lew Krausse and Marty Pattin."

Charlie Spikes - Detroit Tigers

You don't see a lot of Charlie Spikes with the Tigers, for whom he played 10 games in 1978. Here are a pair from the Vault.

Elias Sosa - Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates purchased Sosa from the Dodgers in January 1978. On April 4, three days before their first game that season, the Pirates traded Sosa to the A's as part of their package for Manny Sanguillen. Sosa never pitched for the Bucs during the regular season.

Elias Sosa - St. Louis Cardinals

Sosa appeared in 14 games (including one of his 3 career starts) for the 1975 Cardinals before being traded to Atlanta at the end of May.

Bob Uecker and Bill Stoneman

If I'm deciphering your abbreviations - always a challenge - Uecker did not pose for Topps after midseason 1965 while the Cardinals were visiting Shea Stadium. Thus there are no Topps images of him with Philadelphia or Atlanta.

If you'll look carefully, you'll see that Uecker's 1967 Topps card shows a picture of him that was taken at the Polo Grounds, thus dating it to 1963 or even 1962 when he was still with Milwaukee (though in the 1962 shoot used on his 1963 card he does not appear to be wearing a black turtleneck as he is in the image used on the '67 card).

Never found out why but Bob has also been touchy about the printing and selling of images of him by other photographers.

On a separate point, Topps evidently did not photograph Bill Stoneman after he went to the Angels. I checked.

Jake Virtue 1890

A friend asked me - for far different purposes - to scan some of my more obscure 19th Century cards, so I thought I'd post a few here to see if there's any demand for them.

Jake Virtue was an obscure first baseman for the Cleveland Spiders from 1890 through 1894 (led the NL in errors and putouts in '91, one of his only two seasons as a regular). His real claim to fame might be, being part of this exquisite 1893 set from Cleveland by Just So Tobacco. The series includes the likes of Cy Young and Buck Ewing.

Ed McKean 1887

Slightly more beaten up, here's the image from the Just So card of shortstop Ed McKean, one of the better players from the era who's not in the Hall of Fame (thirteen seasons, all but the last in Cleveland, would've had four 100-RBI seasons had they kept the statistic then - to say nothing of a 114 OPS+ and a career WAR of 38.5)

Lary Sorensen 1977

This one almost slipped through the cracks - the last stop on the longtime Brewers' righthander's career was with the Giants in 1988 (though this is surely from spring training 1989)

(PS - thanks for the quick response on the 1893 Spiders. I'll scan some others of that set in the era in the days to come)

Billy Hart 1890

bmarlowe noticed that the Billy_Hart photo used in the Facepack and on Hart's B-R.com page does not match the image shown in Dennis Pajot's definitive book, The Rise of Milwaukee Baseball. After further searching I found that it actually pictures Bill F. Hart with the 1905 Columbus Senators. I have replaced that image with the confirmed photo from Pajot's book.

Thanks to bmarlowe for spotting the error!

Dto7 has discovered that this excerpt came from a team photo of the 1865 Brooklyn Atlantics, and not from the 1884 Indianapolis Hoosiers. So it is an unidentified player, and NOT Charles Reising.
With respect to post 22162 - that guy is Frank Norton of the 1865 Atlantics.

Ed Kelly 1914

The Ed_Kelly image in the Facepack and on Kelly's B-R.com page actually pictures John B. Kelly with the 1910 Newark Indians. I have replaced that image with this confirmed image, showing Ed Kelly with the 1913 Seattle Indians.
