Stan Clarke 1983
This is about a million times better than the previous image I had of the seldom used reliever, courtesy of Getty Images.

Clint Hurdle 1977
My favorite TV photos are of players who never showed up in an actual Topps Baseball Card....My second favorite are of big leaguers in a uniform that never ended up on a Topps card. In this case, Clint Hurdle "the SI cover boy" from the Royals who was in camp with the Mariners in 1983. He was signed as a Free Agent in February and released 2 months later to close camp. Hurdle was coming off a poor season with the Reds and it looked like his once promising career was coming to an end....after his release he signed with the Mets getting into 13 games with them in 1983. His career wasn't over as he played a bench role for the Mets and Cardinals into the 1987 season.....he certainly never reached the level so many Royals fans had for him

Skip James 1977
Skip James is the only player to come from my HS (Shawnee Mission North) and play in the big leagues. He played in 51 games for the Giants in 1977-78 batting .167 in 36 AB. Drafted out of the University of Kansas, James played in the Giants organization from 1971-78 before spending one season with the Brewers and a final season in Japan playing for Taiyo in 1980

Have a Very Brace Christmas!
A wonderful source of some elusive Brace images has put a few more in my hands. As a Christmas gift to those who have long been frustrated, I'm happy they came this week. All were already cropped as posted except for Erardi, which I cropped.
1968 Bill Haywood Senators Ex-Marine has been impossible for me to find in color. Always knew this was around, and it's as good as Brace gets. 1972 Mike Fiore Padres First color of Fiore (SD) I'd seen 1974 Ron Diorio Phillies Has not surfaced in Vault, leaving only thumbnail sized rookie card image. 1977 Greg Erardi Mariners Original Mariner one of several tough in color, but anything of him had eluded me. 1969 Vern Geishert Angels Previously posted with strong autograph. Here it is clean! |

Missing Oakland A's of the 1980s 1: Mike Patterson 1981
Mike Patterson, a Santa Monica native, spent six years in the minors before finally breaking in with the A's in 1981. Patterson's minor league numbers were consistently good, with OPS in the 700-800 range; he showed good speed and good SB percentage in his first three years but slowed down after than (injury?). His HR output wasn't super, but he hit quite a few doubles and drew some walks in his best years. I can't find minor league fielding stats for him and his MLB fielding doesn't appear to have been very good, but he still looked like a player who could have done the job if given the chance. He opened '81 with the A's, subbing for the fabulous Henderson-Murphy-Armas outfield. Mike hit well in twelve games (25 PA) for the A's, posting a .348 average and .878 OPS, but when May came Billy Martin chose to swap Mike to the Yankees as part of a deal for a couple of pinstripers, pitcher Tom Underwood and 1B Jim Spencer. Mike got only 9 PA for the Yankees, but he hit well for them and did the same in 18 PA in 1982. He should have made it, and I don't know why he didn't. But this was the Steinbrenner era, when rationality was in short supply in Yankees Stadium. Somebody (Merkle?) posted a good color shot of Mike as a Yankee here, but there have been no images of him as an A. Until now, that is. I found several of him in California newspapers, of which these two are much the best.

Missing Player Located Henry Stein 1900 St. Louis Perfectos
I just located a photo of Harry "Henry" Stein, who played one game for the 1900 St. Louis Perfectos. He was a long-time semi-pro player in Illinois and Missouri. I found a very nice photo of him with the Belleville Clerks in 1896. His diminutive stature is evident in the photo and it is no wonder he was often called "Midget" Stein in the local papers. It was pictured in the May 19, 1911 St. Louis Star and Times. He was one of my most wanted guys to find, since I spent so much time on him.

Missing Players Located Pat Callaghan 1884 Indianapolis Hoosiers and Frank Diven 1883 Baltimore
I found a team photo of the 1886 Scranton team, which featured both Pat Callaghan (known during his playing days as Paddy Callahan) and Frank Diven (listed as Devin in the team photo). It was featured in the March 29, 1929 Scranton Republican.
Callaghan was the third baseman for the 1884 Indianapolis Hoosiers and Diven played for the 1883 Baltimore Orioles. |

Missing Player Located Frank "Dad" Meek 1889 St. Louis Browns
I was able to locate a photo of Frank "Dad" Meek, a shortlived major leaguer for the 1889 St. Louis Browns. He was a well-known player in the Illinois-Missouri area and starred for the Murphysboro Clarkes. I contacted the Logan Historical Society and they were able to provide a team photo of the Clarkes and a player list. Henry Stein, who I recently located is also pictured in the photo.

Missing Player Located Al Nichols 1875 Brooklyn 1876 New York 1877 Louisville
I was very surprised to find a team photo of the ill-fated 1877 Louisville Greys in the July 17, 1910 Louisville Courier-Journal. Al Nichols, one of the four members of that club who was banned for game fixing is pictured in the top right of the photo.

Missing Player Located John Burns 1884 Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Unions
I've located a photo of John Burns of the 1884 Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Unions. He is pictured in an 1888 team photo of the Hutchinson, Kansas club. The photo appeared in the January 11, 1913 Hutchinson News. A note in the April 18, 1888 Hutchinson News confirms that Burns is from Brooklyn as noted on bb-ref. (bb-ref has two separate John E. Burns records, but they appear to be the same player). As an added bonus former missing player Ed Dugan also appears in the photo. I had previously found a woodcut of him.

Missing Players Located Bill McCaffrey 1885 Cincinnati and William Hyndman 1886 Baltimore Orioles
I located two more missing players. William Hyndman and Bill McCaffrey are both pictured in a team photo of the 1886 Wilkes-Barre Barons that appeared in the June 18, 1924 Wilkes-Barre Record.
McCaffrey is listed as Caffrey, but contemporary 1886 newspaper accounts confirm it is Bill McCaffrey. |
