October 12th, 1903 World Series Game 8: St Louis Cardinals (4-3) @ Washington Senators (3-4)

WAS: Jake Weimer (0-2) v STL: Ken Forsch (1-1) Ahhh that deep comedown after the heady rush of a cheap high. What had promised so much not only delivered so little but, in the end, became downright embarrassing. The Cards scored 5 in the 3rd and 3 more in the 4th, and by the time the Senators finally got on the board with a pair in the 7th, it was 14-0 and the game was lost and American League Park basically empty. Cardinals skipper Patsy Donovan’s choice of Forsch over Gumbert – who was later named series MVP all the same – proved a masterstroke, as the St Louis starter went the distance, allowing just 7 hits and those two late, utterly futile runs. Deivi Cruz went 3-for-5 with a double and 3 ribbies to lead the Redbirds’ offence, but the depth and breadth of talent in their squad was the real hero, with virtually every starter contributing. And so the National League keeps its win streak alive and the Senators have to go back to the beginning with the rest of the also-rans and try their luck again next season. |

Richie Hebner is too good for this league. He's won batting championships and MVPs in my leagues.

You're right, 33 WAR should have made him ineligible. I'd never heard of him before. Anyway, he's been in it from the start and has been steady but not dominant. He's 33 now and rating 50/50, so I'll let him play out.

Wow... Jake Weimer is a gosh-darn bum. His team is clawing and scratching, fighting with everything they've got, to get that series tied and he gives them 3.2 IP?! Par for the course, I suppose, personally finishing up 0-3 in the World Series. Atta boy Jake! What a series...huh? Wow. I was having 2004 flashbacks. LOL

Just as trivia Pittsburgh let Maury Wills go in the expansion draft for the 1969 season and Hebner was his replacement at 3B. Last edited by Brad K; 10-23-2020 at 08:48 PM. | |

Should add the batting champs and MVPs have always happened early and when I was able to keep him away from LHP.

Fact is, if I'd have noticed his WAR total when he first came into the league FA pool in the 1901 preseason he would have been excluded on that basis alone. I'm glad he didn't sneak through in his peak seasons, that would have bummed me out.
