Chili Davis

I'm replaying 1998 and the Yankees have Chili Davis as a backup catcher. I've reviewed baseball reference and the man caught 6 games in AA back in 1980 and never again in his career. 18 years later, he's backing up Jorge Posada

Can someone explain this to me? I'm using historical minors so everyone's stats are set to real life. Fielding stats are based on 3-year calc. I also have the game developing players not historical development. With these parameters, Chili shouldn't even be getting a whiff of the "tools of ignorance".

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I've had Chili as a C once before, but I think I started that game in 1979 and that's what he was - look at number of games he played as a C in 1978-79. Seems no one came along to put him in the OF so that's where he was in my alternate universe. That's the most frequent cause - a 1978-79 start with him in the minors as a catcher.

What year did you start the Historical Game? Also, do you recall what you set the fielding import to be and the associated recalcs? It's possible if you came in and started the game in 1998 but left it so fielding was set for career, he still had some tiny C rating leftover from those days and the AI liked him as a reserve catcher to free up another position spot and he's getting refamiliarized with the spot.

Started in 1998 but did not import history. Ratings based on real stats as I was using historical minors. 3-year base for fielding.

In the end I decided to scrap the replay, not because of Chili's catching ratings. Restarted in 1993 with imported history this time and everything as before. Chili's only ratings are as LF now.
Thanks for the reply. Enjoying your facegens very much!

I honestly don't think you did anything wrong with your setup. I just tested a 1998 season with 3 year stats for fielding. The game is getting the catching rating for Chili based on him starting as a catcher for 4 games in the minor leagues during 1998. According to his real fielding stats in the OOTP database, he started 1 game in AAA and 3 games in AA.

What is interesting here is that these games do not show up for Chili's fielding stats on Baseball Reference when you access his minor league career.

Noticed the same after I played through 1996 and Chili won the catching silver slugger... Also Tim Raines was listed as a third basemen to start the year. It does seem like it's pulling up these random games from early in the minors and factoring them in. Doesn't make sense when base role/position is set to real life and fielding stats set to 3 years...

It's a known bug that has been previously reported. Even with 1-year recalc, you'll get, for example, the left-handed Carl Yastrzemski playing games all over the infield in the 1970's, presumably because he played some 2B and a few games at SS in his debut minor league league season... in 1959.
