#Birmingham Black Barons

Bill Phyle's time at with the big league club was minimal, as Steve Bedrosian's return from the DL sent Phyle back to AAA. Harley Young began a rehab assignment, signaling more good news for the Black Barons' bullpen.

The starting rotation was supposed to be a strength for Birmingham. Instead, it's in shambles and, even though it's early, some changes are in store, most notably Lefty Gomez replacing Vic Willis in the rotation. Jim Whitney is also pushing for a spot, with some pressure on Sam Streeter and John Malarkey to step it up in their next starts.

Jess Barbour's miserable start to the year will result in some reduced playing time, but his defensive flexibility keeps him on the roster.

Alejandro Peña was ridiculously good, allowing only 1 hit in over 8 innings, but he wasn't around when Herman Long drove in the winning run with a 2 out single in the bottom of the 9th, giving Birmingham a 1-0 walkoff win over Brooklyn.

Curtis Granderson went deep twice as the Black Barons lost to Brooklyn, 5-4. Greg Maddux had an encouraging start for Birmingham, but Bedrosian imploded, giving up 2 homeruns in the 8th.

#Houston Colt 45's

Toad Ramsey was magnificent, striking out 12 and allowing only a single hit in a 1-0 win over Kansas City. Carlos Correa extended his 28 game hitting streak with 2 doubles and Craig Biggio drove in HR Johnson for the game's sole tally.

Correa's hitting streak ended at 29 games, but 2 homeruns from Casey Stengel, along with solo shots from Tony Gwynn and Jeff Bagwell carried Houston to an 8-6 win over Birmingham. Stengel drove in 4 and Gwynn had 3 hits.

Correa bounced right back, sending a ball into the Crawford Seats for a walkoff 3 run homer in a 5-2 win over Birmingham.

#Indianapolis ABC's

2 homers from Johnny Bench and 3 hits from Oscar Charleston weren't enough as the ABC's fell to Homestead, 5-4.

Gorham Leverett's spell with the ABC's was awfully short, as an oblique injury forced him to the DL. Lynn Brenton was recalled from AAA to take Leverett's spot.

Willie Mays (RIP IRL) of the New York Gothams was the NL Player of the Week after hitting .417 with 3 home runs. Over in the AL, the AL Player of the Week Award went to Miami's Ryan Braun, who hit .471 with 5 dingers.

#Team Performance

Look, it's way too early for any of this to matter. But, currently, only 3 games separate the best team in the Effa Manley Division (the Brooklyn Royal Giants at 14-11) and the worst (the Philadelphia Stars mirroring them at 11-14). The Homestead Grays are 1/2 game behind Brooklyn, and the New York Gothams and Ottawa Mounties sit at .500.

Brooklyn, Homestead, and the San Francisco Sea Lions have all gone 7-3 over their last 10 games, while the House of David are in the roughest patch of any team in the league, at 2-8 over their last 10.

#Featured Series

We'll check in on a team that looks much improved over last season, the Homestead Grays. The Grays are hitting better than expected, but more importantly, are finally hitting enough to overcome their usual rough performances on the mound. They are visiting Indianapolis for a 4-game set, and are hoping to keep a recent slide by the ABC's going.

With the announcement that the Grays have moved Zambrano out of the rotation, their starters for the series are all a bit up in the air. They'll lead it off with Doug Drabek, who is taking Zambrano's spot and will be making his first start of the year.

Drabek was fantastic, allowing 2 hits and 1 run in 7 innings, but Rick Ownbey couldn't hold the lead, giving up Barry Larkin's first homer of the year, a 2 run shot to tie the game in the 8th. Luckily for the Grays, Willie Stargell's 2nd homerun of the game gave them the lead in the 10th, and Josh Lindblom was able to hold on for the 4-3 win in extra innings.

Game Two

The Grays turned to Billy Pierce in game 2, putting their rotation back on its expected schedule. His mound opponent, Luis Padrón, tossed a masterful 8 innings in a 14-3 walkover, allowing 5 hits and 1 run while fanning 8. Padrón improved to 4-0 and Tommy Helms had 3 hits and 4 RBI and Helms and Jake Stenzel each scored 3 runs in the rout.

Helms, Stenzel, George Foster, Adam Dunn (fresh off being named Rookie of the Month for April), and Johnny Bench each went yard for Indianapolis as they evened the series at 1 game each.

Chris Sabo went deep twice, driving in 3, and the Grays held on to take the series lead with a 5-4 win. Ray Brown pitched very well, but the trio of Corey Kluber, Michael Jackson, and Josh Lindblom were all a bit shaky in relief. Still, they got the job done. Tommy Helms and Bob Bescher had 2 hits for the ABC's and Joey Votto went deep in the losing effort.

Kluber--fresh off an injury--had to leave the game with an elbow issue, and headed to the DL afterwards. Cliff Lee was recalled.

Game Four

Homestead's bullpen did the job, with Dave Giusti, Rick Ownbey, and Josh Lindblom combining for 3+ innings of 1 hit relief of an effective Francisco Liriano. Mike Epstein went deep for the Grays and Andy Van Slyke showed signs of breaking out of an early season slump with 3 hits. All the ABC's could muster on the day was a 2 run shot from Adam Dunn to tie the game early.

Homestead takes the series, 3-1, continuing their surprising start to the season.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Something was clearly wrong with Mike Mussina all season. Turns out an elbow problem wen unnoticed until it forced him from the game in a 6-5 victory over Chicago. Mussina hit the DL and is expected to miss a few weeks, with the Black Sox finally, and excitedly, recalling Ned Garvin to take his place.

#Cleveland Spiders

Ron Blomberg went deep 3 times (including a 530 ft moon shot) and drove in 7 as the Spiders rolled over Baltimore, 8-4. Cy Young struggled a bit, but only allowed 1 earned run in 6 innings, improving to 3-1.

Lance Berkman matched Blomberg, going deep twice (including his own 550 ft. moon shot), but it wasn't enough as the Spiders fell to Baltimore, 5-3.

Stan Coveleski hit the 10 day DL, with Hank Gastright being recalled from AAA.

The Spiders exploded for 16 runs and 21 hits in a 16-8 doubling of Detroit. Johnny Bates and Joe Sewell had 4 hits each, Bates and John Ellis drove in 4 runs, Bates scored 4 times and Bates and Ellis each went deep twice (with one of Bates' shots being a nearly 540 ft. bomb). Gastright picked up the win in relief of a very ineffective Pat Malone, who couldn't make it through 5 innings despite being staked to a 13-2 lead.

#Detroit Wolverines

Ty Cobb's 2 homeruns and 5 RBIs will grab the headlines, but the Wolverines don't beat Portland 7-3 in 11 innings without Ed Bailey throwing out 6 runners trying to steal over the course of the ballgame. Mike Henneman threw 2 scoreless innings for the win, improving to 2-0 on the year.

#Memphis Red Sox

The Red Sox clubbed 6 homeruns, with both Billy Bryan and Bill White going yard twice, in a 15 to 8 romp over San Francisco. White drove in 4 and Ted Williams, White, and Dobie Moore had 4 hits each.

In what is likely a single-game maneuver, the Red Sox demoted Alex Johnson and recalled Carl Mays from AA for a start. Mays pitched well enough for the win, but not well enough to stick around, as the Red Sox beat the Sea Lions, 10-6 with Manny Ramírez going deep twice. David Ortiz and Wade Boggs had 3 hits each, and Williams also went deep in the victory.

Johnson was left at AAA, with Joe Rudi being recalled.

A 6-5 loss to the Black Yankees was especially costly, as both Skel Roach and Shane Bieber hit the DL. Roach is likely to be out a few weeks, while Bieber may miss only 1 or 2 starts at the most. Derek Lowe and Sadie McMahon were recalled from AAA New Orleans.

#New York Black Yankees

Babe Ruth hit 2 homeruns with the 2nd being a walkoff shot in the bottom of the 11th as the Black Yankees topped Chicago, 5-4. That gives New York 3 players tied for the league lead in homers with 11 in Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle.

Mike Schmidt went deep twice as the Black Yankees built a lead, and then held on for a 9-5 win over the American Giants. Schmidt drove in 6 and Manny Sanguillén had 3 hits, while Ron Guidry improved to 3-1 with 11 strikeouts in just over 6 innings of work.

This team keeps hitting longballs: this time it was Mantle's turn to go deep twice as the Black Yankees beat Memphis 6-3. Elliott Maddox had 3 hits and Jack Scott pitched a strong 8 innings in improving to 3-2.

Waite Hoyt was placed on the 10 day DL, with veteran AJ Burnett recalled from AAA.

#Chicago American Giants

Eddie Collins had 4 hits (including his first homerun of the year) and Mike Fiore had a Mike Fiore day with 3 walks and a homerun leading the American Giants to a 6-3 win over Baltimore. Despite a decent outing, Mark Buehrle was thwarted in his attempt to win his 6th game of the year, with the victory going to Hoyt Wilhelm in relief while AJ Minter picked up his 5th save.

#Los Angeles Angels

The Angels hit five homeruns to back another strong effort from Doc Gooden, who lowered his ERA under 2.00 in an 8-0 blanking of Miami. Doug Rader, Carlos Delgado, Eddie Joost, Kal Daniels, and Mike Trout all went deep for Los Angeles, while Gooden combined with Francisco Rodríguez on the 4 hit shutout.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Miami used back-to-back-to-back homeruns from Ryan Braun (his second of the game), José Canseco, and Jim Thome to surge ahead, then held on to escape with a 6-5 win over Los Angeles. Freddie Fitzsimmons was effective for the first time all year, improving to 2-3 and Sandy Consuegra continued to be borderline unhittable, picking up his 3rd save and lowering his ERA to 0.69.

Well this was a surprise. Kenshin Kawakami was recalled to make a start due to a lack of options. The 32 year old delivered 7 shutout innings, giving up only 3 hits and striking out 6, combining with 3 relievers on a 5 hit shutout as the Cuban Giants defeated the Angels 4-0.

Braden Looper was forced from a game with a sore shoulder, and would hit the DL. 25 year old Bob Gillespie--dominant at Orlando so far--was recalled to take his place.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

With Tommy Bridges headed to the DL, the Sea Lions recalled newly signed reliever Huston Street.

Reggie Jackson went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the Sea Lions fell to Memphis, 8-6. Jackson did it again, hitting 2 homeruns and driving in 4 in a 9-8 win over the Red Sox. Jimmie Foxx also hit 2 out as the Sea Lions went yard 7 times (Jack Clark, Bobby Bonds, and Mickey Cochrane also went deep) and held on despite giving up 5 runs in the last 2 innings.

Rickey Henderson stole 6 bases, overtaking teammate Dick Lundy for the league lead, but the Sea Lions fell to Portland, 5-3.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Frank Isbell's struggles finally earned him a trip to AAA with the Royal Giants needing a starter. Frank Miller was recalled from AAA to make the start, and returned afterwards with, ultimately, Dan Brouthers taking Isbell's roster spot.

2 homeruns from Jackie Robinson and a strong start from Orel Hershiser led Brooklyn over Philadelphia 6-1. Hershiser improved to 3-1, allowing 4 hits and 1 run over 8 innings.

#Homestead Grays

The Grays moved Carlos Zambrano--0-4 with an ERA over 9.00--into the bullpen, with Doug Drabek taking his spot in the rotation. Drabek has been excellent so far in a relief role, with a 2.45 ERA over 9 games.

#New York Gothams

The Gothams welcomed back closer Brian Wilson. They hadn't really missed him, as Mike Norris and Robb Nen combined for 9 saves, but it does extend what might be the best bullpen in the league. Guy Hecker was returned to AAA.

Buster Posey and Johnny Callison hit monstrous homeruns, backing a 3 hit shutout from Carl Hubbell as the Gothams topped the Monarchs, 7-0. Posey had 3 hits and Hubbell improved to 4-2 with the win.

Callison had another 2 homeruns, but the Gothams gave up an 8-3 lead before losing to Ottawa, 9-8.

#Ottawa Mounties

Larry Walker went deep twice and Bill Smith excelled in a spot start as the Mounties topped Houston 6-3.

Cannonball Sam Thompson homered twice leading the Mounties to a come from behind, 9-8 win over the Gothams. Mike Dorgan had 3 hits and 5 relievers (Smith, Dave Gregg, BJ Ryan, Clark Griffith, and Ryan Dempster) combined to allow only 1 hit in over 5 innings of relief of a terribly ineffective Roy Halladay. Smith got the win, strengthening his case to be moved into a full time rotation spot for Ottawa.

#Philadelphia Stars

Scott Rolen went deep twice as the Stars triumphed over Brooklyn, 8-5. Hardie Henderson won his 5th game of the year with 6 decent innings and 5 Stars hurlers combined to close out the victory.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Steve Bedrosian has been getting absolutely torched, prompting the Black Barons to recall Harley Young from his rehab assignment and waive Bedrosian with the hope of sending him to AAA.

Young picked up a save in his first outing as 2 homeruns from Adrián González helped the Black Barons to a 9-6 victory in 10 innings over the House of David. Bob Nieman had 3 hits, with the win going to Juan Ríncón who moved to 2-0 on the year.

While defensive versatility has its place it has to hit more than 136/255/205. Jess Barbour heads to AAA with Gene Tenace being recalled, making the Black Barons one of the few teams to carry three catchers, as JP Arencibia's hot start is too promising to send down quite yet.

Albert Belle went deep twice as the Black Barons hit 6 homeruns (Jim Pagliaroni, Curtis Granderson, Nieman, and Arencibia also hit longballs) and beat the House of David, 7-4.

González did it again, homering twice in a 5-4 victory over the House of David. Warren Spahn was excellent in release, and Bruce Chen picked up his 3rd save of the season.

#Houston Colt 45's

Some roster shakeup is pending, as George Brett started a rehab assignment in the minors, making his way back from an injury picked up in Spring Training. Kent Tekulve was waived, with Andrew Chafin being recalled from a rehab assignment.

Jimmy Wynn went deep twice, but the real story was Toad Ramsey, who improved to 5-1 and saw his ERA dip below 1.00 with a 3 hit shutout of Ottawa. Wynn drove in 3 and Ramsey fanned 12 in the dominant 10-0 shellacking.

Brett was recalled with César Cedeño heading to the minors as expected. Cedeño showed some promise, but ultimately was overmatched by big league pitching.

Jeff Bagwell exploded fully out of his slump with a spectacular performance, going 5 for 5 with 3 homeruns to lead the Colt 45's to a 12 to 6 victory over Ottawa. Bagwell added a double for 15 total bases, scored 4 times, and drove in 7, all of which overshadowed Brett's debut in which he went 2 for 2 with a homerun of his own.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Adam Dunn went deep twice, leading Indianapolis to a 5-3 win over Houston. Dunn, Johnny Bench, Joey Votto, and Luis Padrón each had 2 hits for the ABC's who got an excellent 7 innings from Sad Sam Jones, who picked up his first win of the year with Rob Dibble closing the door for his 5th save.

Padrón is putting something special together so far this year. He hit his 2nd homerun and improved his average to a smooth .400 while improving his record on the mound to 5-0 with nearly 8 innings of strong work in a 6-3 victory over Houston. Padrón drove in 3 and Dunn also went deep for Indianapolis with Dibble picking up his 6th save of the year.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Robinson Canó went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the Monarchs fell to the Gothams, 7-5.

May 7th

We're slightly changing how TWIWBL works. Each week, we'll focus on a new randomly chosen team in detail, and the featured series will be covered there, leaving this entry to focus on awards and individual performances.

#Awards

Houston's Jeff Bagwell used his 3 homerun game to take down the NL Player of the Week Award, hitting .381 with 11 RBI over the week. Over in the AL, Detroit's Ty Cobb, who is putting together a pretty special campaign so far, earned the AL Player of the Week with a .435 average and 6--SIX--homers and 14 RBI's.

#Team Performance

The New York Black Yankees are clearly focused on erasing the poor memories of last season's disappointments, leading the WBL with a .688 winning percentage and currently on a 6 game winning streak. Chicago and the surprising Kansas City Monarchs are the only other teams over .600, and each lead their divisions.

New York and the Detroit Wolverines are each 7-3 over their last 10 games.

At the other end, 3 teams are under .400, including the defending champion Baltimore Black Sox, along with Portland and the Birmingham Black Barons. Baltimore sits 11 games behind the Black Yankees, facing a significant uphill climb to get back into playoff position. It is, however, early May, so it's certainly doable.

#Player Performance

Batters

Through the first month of the season, the WBL feels a little less like Babe Ruth's league offensively, as both Detroit's Ty Cobb and Ottawa's Larry Walker are putting up numbers to rival the Babe, who doesn't even lead the league in homeruns, sitting 1 behind teammate Mickey Mantle, Walker, and the House of David's Ryne Sandberg who all have 13. In addition to Ruth, another Black Yankee, Lou Gehrig, San Francisco's Jimmie Foxx, and Cleveland's Lance Berkman also have 12 dingers so far.

In fact, with his Player of the Week performance, it's feeling a bit like Ty Cobb's world: Cobb leads the WBL in all 3 slash categories, as well as doubles and overall WAR, and is 2nd in hits and RBI.

One thing obvious from this list: the Black Yankees and the San Francisco Sea Lions are both on fire offensively, at least in the top halves of their lineups.

Year 2 is a bit more pitcher friendly than last season, to the point where I would expect to end the year with a handful of sub 3.00 ERAs (last season, there Andy Pettitte, then with Birmingham, led the league with a 3.20 mark).

Houston's rubber-armed Toad Ramsey is having quite a moment, but it's unlikely the knuckleballer can maintain this level of performance.

For the very first TWIWBL Spotlight, we'll be looking at the Detroit Wolverines.

HOME PAGE | ROSTER | POSITIONAL STRENGTH | LEADERS

Last year, the Wolverines won their division with the 2nd best record in baseball and lost to Baltimore in the Whirled Series in 7 games, so there are some expectations at play here.

So far, they're underperforming, sitting 1 game under .500 at 16-17, 6.5 games behind the surging New York Black Yankees in the Bill James Division. At the most zoomed out, their pitching staff has been average, and while the offense has some significant bright spots, there are some issues to address.

THE OFFENSE

It's a decent offense overall, with some power (but nobody in double figures in HR yet) and overall excellent OBP numbers (Detroit is 3rd in the league in walks). There is not much speed, outside of Ty Cobb, who has 13 steals.

#What's Going Right

Ty Cobb. Remember, he's still only 21 years old. And he's slashing 398/462/858, leading the league in all 3 categories, and tied for the team league in HR with 9. 3B Bob Bailey also has 9 and has been the Wolverines' 2nd best hitter amongst their starters.

Hank Greenberg and Al Kaline have been solid, if not spectacular, and Charlie Gehringer and Joe Wood have done better than expected in carrying large loads in the IF as rookies.

Professional hitter Juan Beníquez has professionally hit, slashing 395/511/526 in limited appearances as the club tries to open up more playing time for him. The challenge is that he plays the same positions as Cobb, Greenberg, and Bailey. But there are some ways to juggle the pieces to get his bat in the lineup a bit more often.

#What's Not Going Right

The Wolverines are on the verge of abandoning their 3 catcher strategy. Ed Bailey and Ernie Lombardi are doing fine--not much more than that, but fine--but Bill Carrigan, who hit over .300 last year, is wallowing away with a .087/125/130 slash line. Mix that with the clear needs for more depth at either SS or CF or both, and Carrigan's time with the big league club may be limited.

Tony Phillips may be showing his age, with the 39 year old--last year's sparkplug--managing only a 168/267/287 slash line. Another key to last year's team, Oscar Gamble, is doing only slightly better at 207/349/276. Gamble is still looking for his first homerun of the year, and while that OBP is nice, it's not what the Wolverines really need from him.

THE PITCHING

#What's Going Right

The bullpen has been excellent, with Mike Henneman producing saves at the same rate as last year, but this time being dominating as he's done so, with an ERA and WHIP both under 1.00. Henneman has 9 saves, tied for the league lead, and both Chad Bradford and the surprising Billy Hoeft have been excellent getting to him.

Pete Conway has been a pleasant surprise since being called up, and there is talk of him moving into the rotation as, across 16 appearances, he's arguably been the Wolverines' best pitcher.

#What's Not Going Right

The rotation is a hot mess. Nobody has more than 2 wins and only Charlie Root (2-3, 3.96) is really pitching well. Hal Newhouser has been OK, but Justin Verlander, Johnny Marcum, and especially Gene Conley have all struggled mightily. And it's not an illusion: the more advanced stats (FIP, SIERA) tell the same story of Root being alright and the rest being pretty poor.

THE FARM SYSTEM

TOP PROSPECTS | MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM

There's not a lot of immediate help at AAA on the mound. George Bechtel is off to a decent start, and is probably next in line to get a look.

Wally Moses, Brady Clark, Wes Covington, and Tony Lazzeri have all been looked at as options, depending on what happens with Phillips. And, veteran gloveman George Davis should be back from injury this month.

There's not a lot here, honestly. Logan Hensley is the highest rated arm in the system, and he's not great and teenage phenom Wander Franco is still a few years away, especially if Gehringer continues to develop.

WHAT'S NEEDED

The pitching to right itself and either Greenberg or Kaline to up their game, giving the team another top tier offensive threat to complement Cobb.

Storylines To Watch

Certainly Cobb and his assault on the triple crown. It's doubtful he can maintain the SLG that is required, but if you hit .400, all things are possible.

Key Questions from Spring Training

In their Season Preview, there were 3 Key Questions for Detroit. Here's an update on each.

Who is the 5th Starter? Unfortunately, with the current spate of injuries, this is now who are the 4th and 5th starters, and the answers seem to be Pete Conway and unknown, which is not a great answer.
Can they continue to carry 3 catchers? Not if Bill Carrigan continues to hit under .100.
The MI is a concern. Yeah, it is, but Billy Nash and Joe Wood have done well, although the team is looking forward to the return of George Davis' glove later this month.

FEATURED SERIES

We're looking at 3 game set at the end of the week against the Baltimore Black Sox where the Wolverines will welcome the (now struggling) defending champs to Tiger Stadium for a 3 game set.

Game One

Johnny Marcum left the game with a back injury in the 3rd inning, allowing only a single hit. The bullpen struggled, with Ray Sadecki, George Bechtel, Pete Conway, and Billy Hoeft giving up 7 runs in just over 5 innings.

Luckily, the Wolverines' offense pounded out 17 hits and 12 runs, including 7 tallies in the bottom of the 7th en route to a 12-7 victory. Ty Cobb and Ernie Lombardi had 3 hits each and Charlie Gehringer 4 RBIs.

Chalk one up for the offense. This is sort of the peak of how Detroit can perform with the bat: a lot of hits spread up and down the lineup, a consistent ability to turn over multiple innings. It's also an example of how fragile their staff is. Sadecki debuted well, but neither he nor Bechtel look likely to stick around, and Buddy Napier--expected to be key in late innings--only lowered his ERA to 7.00 with his scoreless inning at the end.

Marcum hit the DL after the game, with Conway likely to take his next start.

Game Two

Justin Verlander turned in the best start of his career, allowing only 1 hit over 8 innings while striking out 11 and walking 3, but the victory went to Mike Henneman as a sacrifice fly from Charlie Gehringer in the bottom of the 9th gave the Wolverines a 1-0 win over Baltimore. Henneman showed flashes of his old self, walking 2 in the 9th before getting out of a jam of his own creation.

For the Black Sox, the game was worth more than the loss as Ned Garvin seemed to return to form with 6 shutout innings.

This game was needed after the bullpen was stretched thin yesterday. Most of all, though, Verlander has always showed this talent, but never really put it together. He still needs to show he can do it consistently (his ERA fell to 4.64 with his 8 shutout innings here, which is fine, but not great), but it's a start.

Game Three

The Wolverines went for the sweep with Charlie Root facing off against Baltimore's Dennis Martínez. Neither ace was very good, with Detroit eventually building a 13-6 lead before the bullpen struggled to an eventual 13-10 win (and the series sweep).

Al Kaline had 3 hits and Hank Greenberg, Oscar Gamble, Tony Phillips, and both Ed and Bob Bailey went deep for Detroit who overcame 3 hits from Frank Robinson and 5 RBI's from Dan McGann in the victory.

See the comments from the first game: another excellent day offensively, with contributions up and down the lineup and 5 SB's to boot (from Joe Wood, Billy Nash, and Juan Beníquez, along with 2 from Ty Cobb). But Root's problems continue, and George Bechtel had another bad outing, giving up a bases loaded triple to McGann and creating the save situation for Chad Bradford.

Still, a sweep is a sweep.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Baby Doll Jacobson was activated from the IL, with Cal Ripken, Jr. shuttling back to AAA. Connie Johnson's recent hot streak keeps him in the rotation, but Jim Palmer moves to the bullpen with the surprising John Tudor taking Palmer's spot. Johnson is still on the edge, sitting with an ERA over 7.00 at the moment, but the real question for Baltimore is how Ned Garvin's return impacts their overall performance.

Don Bessent was sent to AAA to get his stuff back together, with Justin Hampson being recalled.

Garvin's first start was a little rough, but it got the job done as the Black Sox beat Miami 4-3. Garvin gave up 8 hits and 3 runs in 6+ innings, but Gregg Olsen, Buddy Groom, and Joe Beggs allowed only 1 hit in relief with Beggs notching his 5th save of the season.

The Black Sox imploded, given up an 8-1 lead over the final 2 innings of a 9-8 loss to Miami. This wasted 2 homeruns from Manny Machado and a grand slam by Gavvy Cravath and, perhaps more concerning, saw Beggs depart with an undiagnosed injury.

#Cleveland Spiders

Mel Harder and Yordano Ventura were named to the Spiders' rotation, with Bob Feller retaining his spot in the bullpen for now.

Lance Berkman went deep twice, leading the Spiders to a 9-4 victory over the Black Yankees. With 14 homeruns, Berkman now leads the WBL in dingers.

Tris Speaker had 4 hits (including 2 homeruns), scored 5 runs, and drove in 4 and Berkman added 5 ribbies as Cleveland topped Memphis in a roller coaster affair. The Spiders had 17 hits in the 17-11 win, which went to Firpo Marberry, who improved to 2-0.

Berkman continued to absolutely mash the ball with 3 homeruns in a 12-4 win over Memphis, giving him 17 on the year, and the league lead. Chuck Knoblauch had 5 hits, scored 5 runs, and drove in 3 with a WBL record 4 doubles.

Ron Blomberg took over for Berkman, homering twice in a 7-5 win over Memphis.

#Detroit Wolverines

Vernon Wilshere was sent to AAA, with Buddy Napier recalled from his rehab assignment.

Al Kaline went deep twice as the Wolverines downed Chicago, 8-6.

Staff ace Hal Newhouser will miss about 6 weeks with elbow discomfort with George Bechtel being recalled once again. Things got worse as Johnny Marcum was also sent to the DL, expected to miss at least 2 starts. Jack Wilson was recalled from AAA.

#Memphis Red Sox

Dean Chance was recalled from his injury rehab, with Sadie McMahon heading back to AAA. The Red Sox have still refused to name a 5th starter to their rotation.

It was an unearned run, but it was all they needed, as Travis Shaw--pinch running for Wade Boggs--scored on a single to CF by Ted Williams in the bottom of the 9th, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 win over Portland. Len Barker, David Bush, and Andrew Miller combined to allow the Sea Dogs only 5 hits, with Miller evening his record at 2-2.

#New York Black Yankees

Eric Davis--11 homeruns, 24 RBI, 30 R--will miss 5-6 weeks with a torn abdominal muscle. The Black Yankees recalled veteran OF Hank Bauer to take his place on the roster, with Héctor López expected to get more time (some in CF, some in LF with Babe Ruth shifting to CF) in Davis' absence.

The Black Yankees struck out 16 Angels in a 4-2 victory, although a poor outing by Aroldis Chapman eliminated the chance at a combined shutout. Ron Guidry improved to 5-1, allowing 2 hits in 7 plus innings while fanning 13, and Ruth launched his league leading (for the moment) 17th homerun of the year.

#Chicago American Giants

5 hits from Joe Jackson weren't enough as the American Giants fell to Detroit, 8-6. Mark Buehrle had his first rough outing of the year, failing to become the league's first 6 game winner and falling to 5-1.

Paul Konerko went deep twice, the 2nd shot a walkoff job in the bottom of the 10th to give the American Giants a 5-4 win over Detroit.

Akinori Otsuka will miss about 2 weeks with an elbow issue, weakening Chicago's bullpen significantly. Tom Williams was recalled.

#Los Angeles Angels

The Angels recalled Elmer "Mike" Smith from his rehab assignments. Not wanting to be without a lefty, Los Angeles retained Noah Lowry while demoting Anthony DeSclafani despite DeSclafani's better performance.

With George Wright being recalled from his rehab assignment, Eddie Joost is waived with the Angels hoping to retain him in AAA.

Mike Trout had himself a day: 5 hits, 3 homeruns (and 2 doubles), including a game-tying shot in the 9th and a game-winning walkoff in the bottom of the 13th.

Doc Gooden improved to 4-2 on the year with a 4 hit shutout of the Black Yankees. 4 RBI's from Steve Garvey--including his 3rd homerun of the season--accounted for all of the Angels' runs, more than enough to support Gooden, who whiffed 7 and walked none.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Freddie Fitzsimmons horrific start to the year (2-4, 8.17) has cost him his rotation spot, with Ed Brandt being named Miami's #4 starter. Their 5th rotation slot remains open.

Julio Rodríguez was recalled from his rehab assignment, with the Cuban Giants (finally?) deciding that Minnie Miñoso would be better served with time at AAA. Rodríguez' return (and Miñoso's departure) resulted in a bunch of lineup juggling for Miami, as their OF remains quite crowded.

Rodríguez went 2 for 4 in his return as the Cuban Giants fell to Baltimore, 4-3.

The Cuban Giants came back from a 9-1 deficit in the 8th inning to beat Baltimore, 9-8. José Canseco went deep in the 8th and the 9th and Rodríguez in the 9th. Throw in a pinch-hit 2-run double from Gary Sheffield and you have a massive comeback for a shocking victory.

Needing a starter, Fitzsimmons' continued battering led to his being sent to AAA with Lou Fette being recalled.

Al Oliver fractured his foot, and will miss about 5 weeks, with Carlos Morán recalled from AAA.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Jeff Cirillo headed back to AAA with Rogers Hornsby's return from a rehab assignment.

Walter Johnson was magnificent, allowing only a homerun through 8 innings before being chased by a single in the 9th in a 3-1 victory. Johnson evened his record at 3-3 with a 13 strikeout performance, walking none and lowering his ERA to 2.79.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

It was bullpen rejigger week for the Sea Lions, with San Francisco sending Bobby Seay, Steve Ontiveros, and Nick Altrock to AAA, with Tom Brewer, Mel Stottlemyre Sr, and Jim Devlin all being promoted. With both Bump Hadley and Watty Clark struggling, those 3, along with Dennis Eckersley, have to all be considered as auditioning for rotation slots.

Helped by Reggie Jackson's 13th homerun, Hadley, Devlin, Ken Howell, and Rod Beck combined on a 4 hit shutout, leading the Sea Lions to a 2-0 win over Chicago.

With Jimmy Bloodworth due to miss over a month, the Sea Lions recalled Denny Walling from AAA.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Roy White went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the Royal Giants gave up a late lead and lost in 12 innings, 6-5, to the Gothams.

Frank Knauss became the league's first 6 game winner with a 2 hit shutout, striking out 10 en route to a 2-0 victory over Ottawa. Solo homeruns from Duke Snider and Pedro Guerrero were all Knauss needed to move to 6-1 on the year.

#Homestead Grays

Daniel Hudson and Carlos Zambrano are both struggling mightily, but both hold their roster spots for now. It's assumed that one will go down when Corey Kluber comes back from injury; it's likely the other will follow shortly thereafter unless something turns around.

Francisco Liriano tossed a 2-hit shutout, leading the Grays to a 5-0 win over Kansas City. Liriano walked 4 and whiffed 8, and was helped along with homeruns from Mike Epstein and Willie Stargell.

Owen Wilson, struggling to regain his from from last season, will miss about a month and a half with a separated shoulder. OF Goose Goslin was recalled from AAA to take Wilson's role as lefty OF off the bench.

Doug Drabek--perhaps the Grays' best hurler in the early going--hit the DL with a sore wrist. Drabek should only miss a couple starts, but still. Brickyard Kennedy was recalled from AAA. Kennedy pitched well for Brooklyn last season in limited opportunities, but at 35, was released by the Royal Giants in February.

#New York Gothams

Brandon Crawford hit the shortest homerun of the day, but it was enough to give the Gothams a 6-5 walkoff victory in 12 innings over Brooklyn. In great news for the Gothams, Brian Wilson saw his first action of the year, giving up 1 hit and striking out 3 in 1.2 innings. The win went to Mike Norris, who improved to 2-0 with 2+ perfect innings.

Willie Mays went deep twice and Carl Furillo might have staved off his release with his first homerun of the year as the Gothams beat the House of David, 7-5.

Benny Kauff went deep twice, giving him 10 on the year, as the Gothams beat the House of David, 7-3.

#Ottawa Mounties

It was assumed that Ryan Dempster would lose his role as closer when Tom Henke returned. The surprise came when the Mounties moved Dempster to AAA, along with Dupee Shaw, as both Henke and Johnny Podgajny were recalled from their rehab assignments.

#Philadelphia Stars

Tim Belcher was sent to AAA with John Burkett being recalled as the Stars try to address their bullpen.

Joe Rogan tossed a complete game, 2-hit shutout as the Stars beat Birmingham, 7-0. He also drove in 2 while Art Fletcher and Willie Davis had 3 hits each, with Fletcher driving in 4.

Rogan was again the star, delivering a walkoff 2 run single to lead the Stars, who scored 6 runs over the final 3 innings, to a 7-6 victory over Birmingham. Ted Kluszewski went deep twice in the game and Burkett was excellent in his debut, delivering 2+ innings of 1 hit relief with the victory going to Ted Kennedy, now 2-1 on the year.

Scott Rolen went deep twice, but the Stars couldn't hold a lead, falling to Homestead, 7-6.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Jim Whitney replaces John Malarkey in the Black Barons' rotation.

Birmingham has some infield questions to answer, but for the time being, will live with Hank Aaron (far better suited to the OF) being their only alternative at 2B to Cupid Childs.

Larry Benton will miss about a year with elbow surgery. Bill Phyle was recalled, assumedly for a longer period than the first time, during which he saw no action.

#Houston Colt 45's

David Clyde--out since early last season--started an injury rehab assignment.

Roger Clemens had a poor start, leaving him unable to become the league's first 6 game winner, but Jimmy Wynn's second dinger (and 4th run scored) of the game was a walkoff shot in the bottom of the 11th inning. It was a wild game, as homers by George Brett and Craig Biggio (pinch-hitting) kept the game going in the bottom of the 10th and 11th innings.

Wynn again hit 2, but this time, after a 7 run comeback, the Colt 45's couldn't pull it off, losing 11-9 to the House of David in another worryingly bad start from Roy Oswalt.

#Indianapolis ABC's

George Foster's 4th homerun of the year was a grand slam in the top of the 9th, leading the ABC's to a sudden 4-2 victory over Ottawa.

Oscar Charleston had 5 hits and Adam Dunn crushed a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the 10th as the ABCs came from behind to top Birmingham, 7-5.

#Wandering House of David

Kerry Wood took Wade Miley's spot in the House of David's rotation, and Orlando Cabrera was moved to AAA to clear space for Frank Grant's return from a rehab assignment.

Frank Chance had 4 steals but the House of David was unable to hold onto several leads, falling to Houston in 11 innings.

Miley was pressed into an emergency start ... and immediately made everyone question their decisions, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run in 7 innings in clearly his best start of the year. It was an encouraging game for the House of David: Grant had 2 hits in his debut, Anthony Rizzo went deep twice, and Elrod Hendricks (2 hits, 1 HR) and Sammy Sosa (2 hits) showed signs of breaking out of their funks.

Ernie Banks went deep twice and the House of David withstood a massive comeback by Houston, holding on for an 11-8 victory. After rough outings from Rick Reuschel and CC Sabathia, Fergie Jenkins, Ed Bauta, and Bruce Sutter shut it down, allowing only 2 hits over the last 3+ innings.

Banks did it again, hitting 2 homeruns in a 7-6 victory over the Gothams. Sosa had 2 homeruns as well, including the game winning shot in the bottom of the 10th. The House of David would be encouraged by Wood's first start of the year, in which he pitched 6 innings, fanning 10. The victory went to Sutter, who improved to 1-1 with a perfect 1+ innings of relief.

May 14th

The season is beginning to hit its stride, very rapidly approaching the quarter-pole. Clearly, the time from now through the all-star break is vital in defining how things fall out.

#Awards

Albert Pujols of the Kansas City Monarchs hit .650 for the week, winning the NL Player of the Week Award while Babe Ruth took home the AL Player of the Week, hitting .522 with 5 homeruns.

Pujols beat out the House of David's Ernie Banks, who had 7 homeruns and drove in 14, and Scott Rolen of the Philadelphia Stars who posted a 1.997 OPS, hitting .474 with 6 dingers and 8 RBIs.

#Team Performance

The New York Black Yankees (Bill James Division) and the Kansas City Monarchs (Marvin Miller Division) continue to be the only teams above .600, while Birmingham (in the basement of the Marvin Miller Division) and defending champs Baltimore are both at 13-26, tied for the worst record in the league, and a 1-9 record in their last 10 games has seen the Memphis Red Sox (in the Bill James Division along with Baltimore) plummet to a .378 percentage.

The other 2 divisions are much tighter, with the San Francisco Seals leading the Chicago American Giants by .5 games in the Cum Posey Division and Brooklyn and Homestead in a dead heat for first in the Effa Manley Division, where the Ottawa Mounties, in last place, is only 3 games back.

#Injury Report

Chicago's Akinori Otsuka is out for about 2 weeks, weakening the American Giants' bullpen significantly.

Detroit lost both Hal Newhouser and Johnny Marcum from their rotation this week.

Memphis may get some help on the mound this week, as both Shane Bieber and Skel Roach may return from injury.

Jimmy Bloodworth is out for over a month for San Francisco, which is not all bad news for the Sea Lions as it opens more playing time for the irrepressible Dick Lundy.

For our second team spotlight, we head down to Florida to check in on the Miami Cuban Giants. As a reminder, the Cuban Giants have rights to players from the Marlins, the Devil Rays, and the Brewers, along with players born in Cuba.

HOME PAGE | ROSTER | POSITIONAL STRENGTH | LEADERS

This is a young team building towards the future. They've clearly improved since last year, but still sit 3 games behind .500 at .462, 5 games behind San Francisco in the Cum Posey Division.

A .500 record would be an excellent result from the season and it feels, like it often does, like that depends on a pretty significant improvement on the mound.

THE OFFENSE

The lineup is a bit weird--there's no clear leadoff batter, there's not a lot of OBP to build around, etc. But top-to-bottom, they can pretty much rake, and that counts more than specific lineup construction. The Cuban Giants are 3rd in the AL in homers, 4th in runs scored, and 5th in OPS while being 9th in OBP.

#What's Going Right

The OF has been spectacular, with José Canseco and the surprising Ryan Braun combining for 29 homeruns, each with an OPS over 1.000. And in CF, while rookie Julio Rodríguez started hot, it was sort of assumed that he would have a hard time in his return from injury. Not so much: Rodríguez is slashing 361/361/778. It's still fewer than 10 games for the youngster, so a long way to go, but for now he looks legit.

Add Jim Thome's 11 to Canseco and Braun and Miami has 3 players in double digit longballs.

That trio has forced Yasiel Puig, with an OPS near .900 and Alejandro Oms into accepting reduced playing time, although Oms' glove finds a way.

And that's not mentioning the red hot Gary Sheffield whose recent streak has pushed his OPS over .970 or the steady production from Robin Yount at SS. Or Martín Dihigo, who continues to be among the most promising defensive talents the game has ever see, and is now showing at least something at the plate.

#What's Not Going Right

Prize off-season acquisition Iván Rodríguez hasn't gotten his OPS over .600 and his backup, Smoky Burgess--a stalwart bat last year--has hit even worse.

But essentially, the offense has gone very, very right.

THE PITCHING

There is talent here ... but very little production.

#What's Going Right

Hmm. José Méndez (3-1, 4.53) looks like he's growing into his role at the front of the rotation. Sandy Consuegra was pretty much unhittable until a recent rough outing brought him back to earth. Still, Consuegra is 1-2 on the year with 3 saves, 2 holds, and a 3.38 ERA, leading the Cuban Giants' bullpen. Kenshin Kawakami has been surprisingly brilliant since his recall, with a 1.02 ERA over 17+ innings.

Then things start to get a little bumpy. Cole Hamels has been solid, but they need more from him and Ricky Nolasco, while firmly set as the closer, isn't as solidly dependable as you might like.

#What's Not Going Right

Everything else, but perhaps most of all Ramón Martínez, who was expected to be at the very front of Miami's rotation and instead is now 0-6 with an ERA over 7. And in the bullpen, both Adonis Terry and Barry Latman are in danger of heading to AAA if their performances don't improve.

Overshadowing everything else, there is the loss of Camilo Pascual, whose knee injury will keep him out for most, if not all, of the season. Pascual was doing fine before injury, but not living up to his ace billing. Still, for a pitching starved team, it's a big loss.

THE FARM SYSTEM

TOP PROSPECTS | MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM

At 20 years old, Julio Rodríguez certainly seems to be coming good. Behind him, there is some decent talent here, it's just all a ways away with only perhaps U Bert Campeneris or 1B Richie Sexson showing the potential to help out this year. (But, it must be said, Campaneris and Sexson are really lower ceiling versions of players already in Miami--Dihigo and Thome, respectively.)

But Miami isn't really planning for this year, and the trio of Josh Beckett, Jon Matlack, and Luis Tiant Sr. seem likely to help at some point. The problem is there is a lack of truly high end talent here. Miami is likely to regret the Vladimir Guerrero trade at some point, especially if Pudge fails to turn it around offensively.

WHAT'S NEEDED

The pitching just needs to improve to adequacy for the Cuban Giants to have a successful season. And, of course, they have to be smart in their dealings as likely sellers at both trade deadlines, with Consuegra, Kawakami, and Nolsaco being the most attractive veterans on the team).

Key Questions from Spring Training

How does the rest of the staff fill out? This has morphed into how does all of the staff fill out? Pascual is out and Freddie Fitzsimmons--who was so promising last year--is at AAA. Méndez and Hamels are fine, but yet to live up to their potential (remember, Hamels is 25 and Méndez only 23), and Martínez--even younger at 22--looks more like a project than a finished product.
Can the continued development of Eustaquio Pedroso and Martín Dihigo as two way players bear enough fruit to warrant continuing the experiment? In a word ... maybe. Pedroso is pitching alright, but hitting very poorly (although he has shown an ability to get on base, always a plus), while Dihigo has yet to take the mound. So the jury is still very much out.

Game One

The Cuban Giants seem intent on proving that last year was a fluke and they belong in the WBL. Games like this go a long way. José Méndez was solid through 7 innings, allowing only 2 runs and improving to 4-1, but the story was really the offense, which pounded out 20 hits in the 19-7 win. The Cuban Giants were led by Ryan Braun's 3 homeruns (tying the WBL record) and Eustaquio Pedroso's 2, as well as solo shots from Julio Rodríguez, Iván Rodríguez, Robin Yount, and Gary Sheffield. Braun drove in 5, and Pedroso and Pudge 3 each while Braun and Julio Rodríguez scored 3 times each.

Pedroso's 2 dingers were his first 2 of the year, while Braun's 3 gave him 17 on the season, moving him into 2nd place in the league.

Game Two

With Cole Hamels needing a day of rest, the Cuban Giants turned to the surprising Kenshin Kawakami for the start against Chicago's Ben Sheets.

Kawakami was good for 4 innings, then clearly began to be bothered by a foot injury which eventually drove him out of the game. But the damage was done, as the American Giants scored 5 in the 5th and 5 in the 6th en route to a 12-7 win.

For Miami, Julio Rodríguez continued his torrid streak with another 2 homeruns while raising his batting average to .404.

Game Three

It looked like the Cuban Giants would run away with this one, as they roughed up Tricky Nichols for 6 runs in the first 3 innings while Cole Hamels sailed along. Then came the 4th, and Hamels gave up homeruns to Mike Fiore, Paul Konerko, and Vernon Wells, seeing the lead close to 6-5.

But that was it, as the Cuban Giants bullpen trio of Bob Gillespie, Sandy Consuegra, and Ricky Nolasco shut out Chicago the rest of the way. Miami added another 4 homeruns, with Jim Thome, José Canseco, Robin Yount, and Ryan Braun all going deep.

Hamels' performance reflected Miami's challenges with last-season's star in-season acquisition: a perfect 3 innings and 9 strikeouts in 5 plus, but also 5 runs allowed. Not bad, but not exactly good either. Still, if the bullpen can shut the other team down, Miami will do well.

This series gives great insight into how Miami has surprised so far this year (12 runs a game and 16 homeruns over 3 games is pretty strong) and how they have struggled (allowing 8 runs a game). Improved pitching continues to be the key to their march to a .500 record.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Bryce Harper went deep twice--one just over 500 ft.--as the Black Sox triumphed over Memphis, 12-2. As encouraging for the Black Sox was the effort from Connie Johnson, who pitched 6 scoreless innings in the victory.

The Black Sox pounded out 16 hits, including 2 homeruns from Manny Machado, in an easy 13-4 win over Cleveland.

#Cleveland Spiders

Jake Stahl--he of 26 homeruns last year--was sent to AAA to work out his swing, with the Spiders recalling C Victor Martinez, who is expected to pressure Louis Santop and John Ellis for playing time.

#Detroit Wolverines

With a staff beset by injuries, the Wolverines have moved Pete Conway into the rotation, while keeping the 5th slot undecided for the time being. They also sent George Bechtel and Ray Sadecki to the minors, recalling Mickey Lolich and Wilson Álvarez from AA.

Al Kaline went deep twice, but it was far from enough as the Wolverines fell to the Black Yankees, 15-9. Chili Davis did the same the next day, hitting 2 out in an 8-6 loss to New York.

#Memphis Red Sox

Vern Stephens' rough start to the year has cost him his starting job, ceding the SS role for Memphis to Dobie Moore. Dean Chance was returned to AAA in exchange for Nixey Callahan as the Red Sox found themselves short on rested starters.

#New York Black Yankees

Gary Lavelle was put on the DL, with Herm Wehmeier being recalled from AAA for a spot start.

Mickey Mantle drove in 6 and 5 Black Yankees went deep in a 15-9 win over Detroit. Hank Bauer, Tom Herr, Mike Schmidt, Don Mattingly, and Derek Jeter joined Mantle in hitting homeruns, with Herr and Bauer each scoring 3 times as New York pounded out 18 hits.

Mantle went deep twice and Babe Ruth hit his 20th of the year as the Black Yankees beat Detroit 8-6, with Andy Pettitte improving to 4-2.

#Chicago American Giants

Ed Walsh allowed only 2 hits through 8 innings--both to Miami's Julio Rodríguez as the American Giants blanked the Cuban Giants, 6-0. A rain delay forced Walsh, who improved to 3-1, out of the game in the 8th, but Tom Williams pitched a perfect 9th to preserve the shutout. Much ridiculed Jack Doyle was hit by a pitch 3 times in the game, which is, you know, something.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Lou Fette headed back to AAA with Braden Looper's activation from the DL. The promising Kenshin Kawakami will miss over a month with a sprained ankle, with Steven Wright recalled from AAA.

Ryan Braun went deep twice--giving him 20 on the year--as the Cuban Giants came from behind to beat Chicago, 4-3. José Méndez was fantastic, but didn't figure in the decision while Sandy Consuegra was roughed up, but got the win with Ricky Nolasco earning his 7th save of the season.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Two homeruns from Gil Hodges and an excellent start from Walter Ball led Portland to an 11-1 win over the Black Yankees.

Last year's reserve darling, Gary Pettis, was sent to AAA. No matter your speed and no matter your glove, a .400 OPS can do that. Jeff Burroughs was recalled from a rehab stint.

Rogers Hornsby and Bobby Murcer went deep twice as the Sea Dogs trounced the Angels, 11-4. Ken Griffey, Jr., Jim Fregosi, Kent Hrbek, and Joe Mauer also went deep for the Sea Dogs as Bert Blyleven improved to 2-1 on the year despite being roughed up for 9 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Reggie Jackson hit 2 homeruns and Denny Walling went 4 for 5 with a dinger in his WBL debut as the Sea Lions pounded out a 15-4 victory over the Wolverines. San Francisco had 6 homeruns among their 21 hits, with Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, and Turkey Stearnes joining Walling and Jackson.

Not to be outdone, Jack Clark went deep 3 times, but it wasn't enough as the Sea Lions fell to Detroit, 7-6.

Lefty Grove put it all together with a complete game, 4 hit shutout of Memphis, striking out 9 and improving his record to 5-4. The Sea Lions also only managed 4 hits, but managed to score twice, once on a 2-out RBI from Clark and once on a solo shot from Bobby Bonds to win the game, 2-0.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Two homeruns from Ron Cey helped bust a game wide open as the Royal Giants pummeled the House of David, 15-4. The win was costly for Brooklyn, as Jackie Robinson was forced to the DL with a sprained ankle. Veteran Frank Isbell was recalled from AAA.

Ray Dandridge went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the House of David prevailed over the Royal Giants 6-5 in 10 innings. Mike Piazza duplicated Dandridge's feat, homering twice in a loss, as the House of David triumphed once more, 9-6.

#Homestead Grays

Mike Epstein went deep twice and Josh Gibson added a grandslam as the Grays built a big lead against the Colt 45's and held on for a 15-10 victory. Gibson drove in 6 and Epstein scored 4 times and Bob Friend pitched barely well enough to even his record at 2-2.

Rick Reichardt went deep twice leading the Grays to a 9-6 win over the Gothams.

#New York Gothams

The Gothams made some changes on the mound, deciding that Rube Waddell and Don Sutton just allow far too many homeruns. Waddell was moved to AAA with Sutton being removed from the rotation. Tony Mullane was recalled to take Waddell's spot.

The Gothams were more reluctant to pull the trigger on the other saide of the roster, but with the quartet of Jimmy Sheckard, Eugenio Suárez, Carl Furillo, and Wes Westrum all struggling mightily, their hand may be forced soon enough.

#Ottawa Mounties

Roberto Alomar homered twice, each shot giving Ottawa the lead after scores from Philadelphia and the Mounties edged the stars, 5-3. Old Hoss Radbourn had a good outing, improving his record to 5-3, and Clark Griffith earned his first save.

Larry Walker and Carlos Beltrán each went deep twice as the Mounties beat Philadelphia, 10-3. Walker did it again, going deep twice in support of another strong start from Bill Smith in a 6-1 victory over Houston. Walker now has 20 on the season, tying him for the league lead.

#Philadelphia Stars

Young Bill Gatewood was sent to AAA to work out his command with Fred Cambria being recalled. José Ramírez and Sherm Lollar retain their roster spots for now, but both may see their playing time reduced due to their offensive struggles.

#Birmingham Black Barons

Desperate to address a disaster zone of a bullpen, the Black Barons sent Vic Willis and Warren Spahn to AAA, hoping they can get on track and/or their replacements, Fred Fussell and Charlie Morton, can step in with more effectiveness.

#Houston Colt 45's

Jason Castro's horrid start to the season has led to Houston swapping out backup catchers, with the much-maligned Jim O'Rourke being recalled from AAA. O'Rourke's first longball of the year was a walkoff job, as 2 homeruns from Tony Gwynn helped the Colt45's complete the comeback before O'Rourke finished the job in a 10-8 victory over Ottawa.

Roger Clemens twirled a complete game gem as Houston topped Ottawa 7-1. Clemens improved his record to 6-0, allowing only 2 hits and a single unearned run and Andrés Galarraga delivered a key homerun. Pete Hill had 3 hits in the game, which also saw George Brett return to the DL with a hamstring issue.

OF Johnny Damon was recalled from AAA.

Damon delivered with 2 hits and a homerun in his WBL debut, but the game was carried by Jeff Bagwell, who went deep twice, scored 4 times, and drove in 5 as Houston demolished Ottawa 14-5.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Lefty James and Joe Morgan were recalled from their injury rehab assignments, with Lynn Breton and Denis Menke heading to AAA. The last was a bit of a surprise, but forced by Tommy Helms' fantastic performance with the ABC's.

Despite a rough outing, Johnny Cueto became the first 7 game winner in the league, improving to 7-1 in a 9-8 victory over the Gothams. The Only Nolan, James, Jack Billingham, and Rob Murphy did enough in relief to preserve the win as Bob Bescher, Morgan, Joey Votto, and Jake Stenzel each went yard.

#Kansas City Monarchs

Boog Powell and Ducky Medwick each went yard twice as the Monarchs used a 6 run 8th to power an 11-4 win over Birmingham. Frank Castillo wasn't very good, but he was good enough to hold on for the victory, improving to 6-0 on the season.

Later in the week, Castillo improved to 7-0 with a 4 hit shutout, striking out 14 (the most in the WBL this season) and walking none in a brilliant performance. Ozzie Smith and Medwick went deep in support of Castillo.

Miami Cuban Giants OF Ryan Braun, who hit 6 homeruns with a .417 average, was the AL Player of the Week and Mike Epstein of the Homestead Grays took home the NL Player of the Week. Epstein hit .556 with 5 homeruns.

#Team Performance

It's still far too early, of course, but there is a sliver of daylight emerging in 3 of the 4 divisions.

In the Bill James Division, the New York Black Yankees lead the Cleveland Spiders by 4 games; in the Cum Posey Division, the San Francisco Sea Lions have ridden an 8-2 streak to a 3 game lead over the Chicago American Giants, and in the Marvin Miller Division, the Kansas City Monarchs have opened up a 4.5 game edge over the Indianapolis ABC's.

So that leaves the Effa Manley Division, where all 5 teams are separated by only 5 games from the Grays on top to the Philadelphia Stars at the bottom. Here's how it stacks up:

Batters

Returning to normalcy: all the bold next to Babe Ruth.

But there are a ton of new storylines here as well: is Ty Cobb for real? Just how many doubles can he hit? Ruth tied for the league lead in homeruns isn't news, but being joined by Ryan Braun and Larry Walker is (similarly, Ruth leading with 50 RBI's is familiar; Walker joining him is not).

Also, Tony Gwynn hitting .421 is fun.

Houston's Toad Ramsey has come back to the pack some, but all that bold shows just how far ahead of them he had gone. For the batters, the dominance of players from Las Vegas (Los Angeles' AAA franchise) and Columbus (the AAA home for the House of David) is striking. Of these, Stearns may get a look soon given the Angels' current struggles behind the plate and Valo's performance may force himself back to the WBL. With both Kang and Brown blocked by Ron Cey--having a great season with the House of David--perhaps those 2 end up as trade bait?

Pitchers are highly unpredictable, of course. Redding and Peterson are doing excellently and seem destined for great things; at the same time, both Lee and Bechtel have struggled with their big league clubs.

A team still in search of identity, but you can see some reason for optimism. I mean, if you squint.

The Angels inherit players from their namesake and from the New York Mets.

HOME PAGE | ROSTER | POSITIONAL STRENGTH | LEADERS

The Angels sit at exactly .500, closer to last than to first in the Cum Posey Division (5 games behind division leaders San Francisco, 3.5 games out ahead of last place Portland).

Honestly, a .500 finish is probably the goal for the year, so as far as that goes, they're on track. It's just hard to get all that excited about that. But you can see things happening for this team, both offensively and, if you look at the talent scattered throughout their minor league system, on the mound.

THE OFFENSE

There's a budding superstar here, surrounded by a fair number of question marks. That's not quite fair: Mike Trout is a budding superstar, but Bobby Grich and Doug Rader are both solid, Kal Daniels continues to demonstrate all the tools, and rookie OF Ichiro Suzuki looks set for a long WBL career.

Currently, though, this offense is just about the definition of league average, sitting 9th or 10th in almost all statistical categories.

#What's Going Right

Trout is still not an elite power hitter, but every other part of his game is on point and Grich, who leads the team in HR with 10, produces far above the norm offensively for 2B. Veteran Carlos Delgado continues to deliver, and may end up being a pretty attractive trade piece if Los Angeles loses contact with the division leaders.

George Wright's return from injury has helped to settle the situation at SS, but Wright will always struggle to add much with the bat.

#What's Not Going Right

Steve Garvey's continued struggles may send him down to the minors, and more and more it looks like his future will be at 1B, not 3B. C is a mess, with the platoon of AJ Pierzynski and Jeff Torborg struggling enough that the team plans to recall John Stearns from AAA this week.

With Suzuki, Wright, Garvey, and Mark Ellis all seeing at least semi-regular playing time, the Angels have a lot of players who are pretty allergic to taking a walk.

THE PITCHING

Los Angeles has somehow put together a top end pitching staff. It's not likely to last top to bottom, but the higher end talent is very encouraging.

#What's Going Right

Doc Gooden has been spectacular, with the 22 year old sporting a 2.60 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP, but only a 4-3 record across 8 starts. Last year's ace, Gerrit Cole, has struggled a bit, but the contributions of Tom Seaver (3-2, 3.88) and Brett Anderson (3-2, 4.60), along with the steady innings eating ability of Pud Galvin, has given Los Angeles a very strong rotation. And Cole, at 25, is the veteran of the bunch.

Roy Patterson, Ross Reynolds, and Mike Smith have been excellent in the middle innings, and Joe Nathan has 8 saves.

Perhaps most of all, the Angels decision to send Nolan Ryan and Chuck Finley to the minors seems to have paid off, with each of them performing well at AA.

#What's Not Going Right

Not a lot, although the back end of the bullpen has been a little weak, with Francisco Rodríguez and Julio Teheran struggling and Nathan's peripheral numbers being far rougher than his record may indicate.

Lefty Noah Lowry has been very ineffective, and his holding on to his roster spot by his fingernails.

Derrek Lee has struggled, and is in danger of losing his job to Wally Joyner, although that would leave the Angels with 2 lefties at 1B.

THE FARM SYSTEM

TOP PROSPECTS | MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM

This is not a great system, although if you count Ryan and Finley (who passed their rookie limits last season) it looks much better. IF Xander Bogaerts and closer Bryan Harvey are probably the highest ceiling prospects, followed by IF Marcus Semien, professional hitter Babe Herman, and OFs Dwayne Murphy, Brian Nimmo, and Billy Hamilton.

Of those, only Bogaerts is doing well.

Veteran help is available at AAA in the form of OF Elmer Valo, Stearns, 1Bs Wally Joyner and Jack Hannifin, and 3B Pedro Álvarez.

WHAT'S NEEDED

The offense has to improve faster than the offense reverts to the mean.

Game One

This is what happens when your bullpen is toast. With Joe Nathan and Francisco Rodríguez needing rest, the Angels were forced to turn to Noah Lowry in a high leverage situation ... and it did not go well.

Brett Anderson was strong over 6 plus innings, and the Angels held a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th. But Roy Patterson and Lowry collapsed, giving up 5 runs, including a go-ahead 3 run shot by Manny Ramírez as Memphis claimed a come from behind victory.

Game Two

More of the same. Los Angeles roared out of the gate, with back-to-back homeruns to lead off the game from Don Buford and Kal Daniels. Bobby Grich added a 2 run shot later in the inning, and the Angels were up 4-0. They touched Bill Doak for another run, leading 5-0 after 3.5.

And then Tom Seaver began to struggle, giving up homeruns to Manny Ramírez in consecutive innings, tying up the ballgame at 5. After Ross Reynolds was forced from the game with a forearm issue, David Ortíz greeted Roy Patterson with a solo shot to give the Red Sox a 6-5 lead.

Bobby Grich hit his second of the game, taking Jonathan Papelbon deep in the 9th to tie it, but the Angels bullpen wasn't up to the task, eventually surrendering a bases loaded single to Mookie Betts for the walkoff win for Memphis.

The game was costly for each team, as Memphis' Dobie Moore also left with an injury. Reynolds will miss about a week, landing him on the DL, with the Angels recalling Scott Rice from AAA. Rice has a shot at taking Noah Lowry's role as the pen lefty, depending on how his initial WBL outings go.

Moore's status is still unknown.

Game Three

Don Buford led off the game with a homerun for the second consecutive game, staking Gerrit Cole to an early 1-0 lead. Cole wasn't up for the task, giving up 1 in the bottom of the first and a whopping 6 in the 2nd before being chased from the game by a Mookie Betts blast in the 4th.

The Angels offense did well against Len Barker, touching him for 6 runs in 6 innings, and staying close enough that a George Wright homerun (!) in the 8th could make it a 1 run game, 11-10 Memphis. They put two runners on base against Heath Bell in the 9th, but were unable to break through, and the Red Sox take the first 3 games of the series.

Wade Boggs had 3 doubles for Memphis and scored 4 times.

Angels 3B Doug Rader had to leave the game, but isn't likely to require a trip to the DL. There was great news for Memphis as well, as Dobie Moore will only miss about a day with his bruised shin.

Game Four

Don Buford didn't lead off this one with a homer: he waited until the 5th inning to launch a 3 run shot, putting the Angels up, 3-2. Steve Garvey and Ichiro Suzuki added 2 RBIs each in the 6th, increasing the lead to 7-2.

Doc Gooden had given up a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 1st to David Ortíz, but had shut Memphis down after that, lasting 7 innings in a very strong outing. Scott Rice relieved Gooden for his WBL debut ... and it did not go well, with Rice giving up 3 runs, allowing the Red Sox to close the gap to 9-5.

With a 4 run lead, the Angels turned to Francisco Rodríguez ... who promptly loaded the bases to start the bottom of the 9th. A walk to Ted Williams made it 9-6, and brought in Los Angeles' closer, Joe Nathan. Nathan whiffed two ... and then gave up a walkoff grand slam homerun to Billy Bryan, giving the Red Sox the series sweep.

Buford--who had a great series--finished the game with 5 RBIs, giving him 3 homers and 7 RBIs over the 4 games.

Harley Young began a rehab assignment, signaling more good news for the Black Barons' bullpen. The starting rotation was supposed to be a strength for Birmingham. Instead, it's in shambles and, even though it's early, some changes are in store, most notably Lefty Gomez replacing Vic Willis in the rotation. Jim Whitney is also pushing for a spot, with some pressure on Sam Streeter and John Malarkey to step it up in their next starts. Jess Barbour's miserable start to the year will result in some reduced playing time, but his defensive flexibility keeps him on the roster. Alejandro Peña was ridiculously good, allowing only 1 hit in over 8 innings, but he wasn't around when Herman Long drove in the winning run with a 2 out single in the bottom of the 9th, giving Birmingham a 1-0 walkoff win over Brooklyn. Curtis Granderson went deep twice as the Black Barons lost to Brooklyn, 5-4. Greg Maddux had an encouraging start for Birmingham, but Bedrosian imploded, giving up 2 homeruns in the 8th. #Houston Colt 45's Toad Ramsey was magnificent, striking out 12 and allowing only a single hit in a 1-0 win over Kansas City. Carlos Correa extended his 28 game hitting streak with 2 doubles and Craig Biggio drove in HR Johnson for the game's sole tally. Correa's hitting streak ended at 29 games, but 2 homeruns from Casey Stengel, along with solo shots from Tony Gwynn and Jeff Bagwell carried Houston to an 8-6 win over Birmingham. Stengel drove in 4 and Gwynn had 3 hits. Correa bounced right back, sending a ball into the Crawford Seats for a walkoff 3 run homer in a 5-2 win over Birmingham. #Indianapolis ABC's 2 homers from Johnny Bench and 3 hits from Oscar Charleston weren't enough as the ABC's fell to Homestead, 5-4. Gorham Leverett's spell with the ABC's was awfully short, as an oblique injury forced him to the DL. Game One With the announcement that the Grays have moved Zambrano out of the rotation, their starters for the series are all a bit up in the air. They'll lead it off with Doug Drabek, who is taking Zambrano's spot and will be making his first start of the year. Drabek was fantastic, allowing 2 hits and 1 run in 7 innings, but Rick Ownbey couldn't hold the lead, giving up Barry Larkin's first homer of the year, a 2 run shot to tie the game in the 8th. Luckily for the Grays, Willie Stargell's 2nd homerun of the game gave them the lead in the 10th, and Josh Lindblom was able to hold on for the 4-3 win in extra innings. Turns out an elbow problem wen unnoticed until it forced him from the game in a 6-5 victory over Chicago. Mussina hit the DL and is expected to miss a few weeks, with the Black Sox finally, and excitedly, recalling Ned Garvin to take his place. #Cleveland Spiders Ron Blomberg went deep 3 times (including a 530 ft moon shot) and drove in 7 as the Spiders rolled over Baltimore, 8-4. Cy Young struggled a bit, but only allowed 1 earned run in 6 innings, improving to 3-1. Lance Berkman matched Blomberg, going deep twice (including his own 550 ft. moon shot), but it wasn't enough as the Spiders fell to Baltimore, 5-3. Stan Coveleski hit the 10 day DL, with Hank Gastright being recalled from AAA. The Spiders exploded for 16 runs and 21 hits in a 16-8 doubling of Detroit. Johnny Bates and Joe Sewell had 4 hits each, Bates and John Ellis drove in 4 runs, Bates scored 4 times and Bates and Ellis each went deep twice (with one of Bates' shots being a nearly 540 ft. bomb). Gastright picked up the win in relief of a very ineffective Pat Malone, who couldn't make it through 5 innings despite being staked to a 13-2 lead. #Detroit Wolverines Ty Cobb's 2 homeruns and 5 RBIs will grab the headlines, but the Wolverines don't beat Portland 7-3 in 11 innings without Ed Bailey throwing out 6 runners trying to steal over the course of the ballgame. Mike Henneman threw 2 scoreless innings for the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. #Memphis Red Sox The Red Sox clubbed 6 homeruns, with both Billy Bryan and Bill White going yard twice, in a 15 to 8 romp over San Francisco. White drove in 4 and Ted Williams, White, and Dobie Moore had 4 hits each. In what is likely a single-game maneuver, the Red Sox demoted Alex Johnson and recalled Carl Mays from AA for a start. Mays pitched well enough for the win, but not well enough to stick around, as the Red Sox beat the Sea Lions, 10-6 with Manny Ramírez going deep twice. David Ortiz and Wade Boggs had 3 hits each, and Williams also went deep in the victory. Johnson was left at AAA, with Joe Rudi being recalled. A 6-5 loss to the Black Yankees was especially costly, as both Skel Roach and Shane Bieber hit the DL. Roach is likely to be out a few weeks, while Bieber may miss only 1 or 2 starts at the most. Derek Lowe and Sadie McMahon were recalled from AAA New Orleans. #New York Black Yankees Babe Ruth hit 2 homeruns with the 2nd being a walkoff shot in the bottom of the 11th as the Black Yankees topped Chicago, 5-4. That gives New York 3 players tied for the league lead in homers with 11 in Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle. Mike Schmidt went deep twice as the Black Yankees built a lead, and then held on for a 9-5 win over the American Giants. Schmidt drove in 6 and Manny Sanguillén had 3 hits, while Ron Guidry improved to 3-1 with 11 strikeouts in just over 6 innings of work. This team keeps hitting longballs: this time it was Mantle's turn to go deep twice as the Black Yankees beat Memphis 6-3. Elliott Maddox had 3 hits and Jack Scott pitched a strong 8 innings in improving to 3-2. Despite a decent outing, Mark Buehrle was thwarted in his attempt to win his 6th game of the year, with the victory going to Hoyt Wilhelm in relief while AJ Minter picked up his 5th save. #Los Angeles Angels The Angels hit five homeruns to back another strong effort from Doc Gooden, who lowered his ERA under 2.00 in an 8-0 blanking of Miami. Doug Rader, Carlos Delgado, Eddie Joost, Kal Daniels, and Mike Trout all went deep for Los Angeles, while Gooden combined with Francisco Rodríguez on the 4 hit shutout. #Miami Cuban Giants Miami used back-to-back-to-back homeruns from Ryan Braun (his second of the game), José Canseco, and Jim Thome to surge ahead, then held on to escape with a 6-5 win over Los Angeles. Freddie Fitzsimmons was effective for the first time all year, improving to 2-3 and Sandy Consuegra continued to be borderline unhittable, picking up his 3rd save and lowering his ERA to 0.69. Well this was a surprise. Kenshin Kawakami was recalled to make a start due to a lack of options. The 32 year old delivered 7 shutout innings, giving up only 3 hits and striking out 6, combining with 3 relievers on a 5 hit shutout as the Cuban Giants defeated the Angels 4-0. Braden Looper was forced from a game with a sore shoulder, and would hit the DL. 25 year old Bob Gillespie--dominant at Orlando so far--was recalled to take his place. #San Francisco Sea Lions With Tommy Bridges headed to the DL, the Sea Lions recalled newly signed reliever Huston Street. Reggie Jackson went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the Sea Lions fell to Memphis, 8-6. Jackson did it again, hitting 2 homeruns and driving in 4 in a 9-8 win over the Red Sox. Jimmie Foxx also hit 2 out as the Sea Lions went yard 7 times (Jack Clark, Bobby Bonds, and Mickey Cochrane also went deep) and held on despite giving up 5 runs in the last 2 innings. Frank Miller was recalled from AAA to make the start, and returned afterwards with, ultimately, Dan Brouthers taking Isbell's roster spot. 2 homeruns from Jackie Robinson and a strong start from Orel Hershiser led Brooklyn over Philadelphia 6-1. Hershiser improved to 3-1, allowing 4 hits and 1 run over 8 innings. #Homestead Grays The Grays moved Carlos Zambrano--0-4 with an ERA over 9.00--into the bullpen, with Doug Drabek taking his spot in the rotation. Drabek has been excellent so far in a relief role, with a 2.45 ERA over 9 games. #New York Gothams The Gothams welcomed back closer Brian Wilson. They hadn't really missed him, as Mike Norris and Robb Nen combined for 9 saves, but it does extend what might be the best bullpen in the league. Guy Hecker was returned to AAA. Buster Posey and Johnny Callison hit monstrous homeruns, backing a 3 hit shutout from Carl Hubbell as the Gothams topped the Monarchs, 7-0. Posey had 3 hits and Hubbell improved to 4-2 with the win. Callison had another 2 homeruns, but the Gothams gave up an 8-3 lead before losing to Ottawa, 9-8. #Ottawa Mounties Larry Walker went deep twice and Bill Smith excelled in a spot start as the Mounties topped Houston 6-3. Cannonball Sam Thompson homered twice leading the Mounties to a come from behind, 9-8 win over the Gothams. Mike Dorgan had 3 hits and 5 relievers (Smith, Dave Gregg, BJ Ryan, Clark Griffith, and Ryan Dempster) combined to allow only 1 hit in over 5 innings of relief of a terribly ineffective Roy Halladay. Smith got the win, strengthening his case to be moved into a full time rotation spot for Ottawa. #Philadelphia Stars Scott Rolen went deep twice as the Stars triumphed over Brooklyn, 8-5. Young picked up a save in his first outing as 2 homeruns from Adrián González helped the Black Barons to a 9-6 victory in 10 innings over the House of David. Bob Nieman had 3 hits, with the win going to Juan Ríncón who moved to 2-0 on the year. While defensive versatility has its place it has to hit more than 136/255/205. Jess Barbour heads to AAA with Gene Tenace being recalled, making the Black Barons one of the few teams to carry three catchers, as JP Arencibia's hot start is too promising to send down quite yet. Albert Belle went deep twice as the Black Barons hit 6 homeruns (Jim Pagliaroni, Curtis Granderson, Nieman, and Arencibia also hit longballs) and beat the House of David, 7-4. González did it again, homering twice in a 5-4 victory over the House of David. Warren Spahn was excellent in release, and Bruce Chen picked up his 3rd save of the season. #Houston Colt 45's Some roster shakeup is pending, as George Brett started a rehab assignment in the minors, making his way back from an injury picked up in Spring Training. Kent Tekulve was waived, with Andrew Chafin being recalled from a rehab assignment. Jimmy Wynn went deep twice, but the real story was Toad Ramsey, who improved to 5-1 and saw his ERA dip below 1.00 with a 3 hit shutout of Ottawa. Wynn drove in 3 and Ramsey fanned 12 in the dominant 10-0 shellacking. Brett was recalled with César Cedeño heading to the minors as expected. Cedeño showed some promise, but ultimately was overmatched by big league pitching. Jeff Bagwell exploded fully out of his slump with a spectacular performance, going 5 for 5 with 3 homeruns to lead the Colt 45's to a 12 to 6 victory over Ottawa. Bagwell added a double for 15 total bases, scored 4 times, and drove in 7, all of which overshadowed Brett's debut in which he went 2 for 2 with a homerun of his own. #Indianapolis ABC's Adam Dunn went deep twice, leading Indianapolis to a 5-3 win over Houston. Dunn, Johnny Bench, Joey Votto, and Luis Padrón each had 2 hits for the ABC's who got an excellent 7 innings from Sad Sam Jones, who picked up his first win of the year with Rob Dibble closing the door for his 5th save. Padrón is putting something special together so far this year. He hit his 2nd homerun and improved his average to a smooth .400 while improving his record on the mound to 5-0 with nearly 8 innings of strong work in a 6-3 victory over Houston. Each week, we'll focus on a new randomly chosen team in detail, and the featured series will be covered there, leaving this entry to focus on awards and individual performances. #Awards Houston's Jeff Bagwell used his 3 homerun game to take down the NL Player of the Week Award, hitting .381 with 11 RBI over the week. Over in the AL, Detroit's Ty Cobb, who is putting together a pretty special campaign so far, earned the AL Player of the Week with a .435 average and 6--SIX--homers and 14 RBI's. #Team Performance The New York Black Yankees are clearly focused on erasing the poor memories of last season's disappointments, leading the WBL with a .688 winning percentage and currently on a 6 game winning streak. Chicago and the surprising Kansas City Monarchs are the only other teams over .600, and each lead their divisions. New York and the Detroit Wolverines are each 7-3 over their last 10 games. At the other end, 3 teams are under .400, including the defending champion Baltimore Black Sox, along with Portland and the Birmingham Black Barons. Baltimore sits 11 games behind the Black Yankees, facing a significant uphill climb to get back into playoff position. It is, however, early May, so it's certainly doable. #Player Performance Batters Through the first month of the season, the WBL feels a little less like Babe Ruth's league offensively, as both Detroit's Ty Cobb and Ottawa's Larry Walker are putting up numbers to rival the Babe, who doesn't even lead the league in homeruns, sitting 1 behind teammate Mickey Mantle, Walker, and the House of David's Ryne Sandberg who all have 13. In addition to Ruth, another Black Yankee, Lou Gehrig, San Francisco's Jimmie Foxx, and Cleveland's Lance Berkman also have 12 dingers so far. In fact, with his Player of the Week performance, it's feeling a bit like Ty Cobb's world: Cobb leads the WBL in all 3 slash categories, as well as doubles and overall WAR, and is 2nd in hits and RBI. Makonnen All Star Reserve Join Date: May 2020 Posts: 913	TWIWBL 63.2: Spotlight on the Detroit Wolverines For the very first TWIWBL Spotlight, we'll be looking at the Detroit Wolverines. HOME PAGE \| ROSTER \| POSITIONAL STRENGTH \| LEADERS Last year, the Wolverines won their division with the 2nd best record in baseball and lost to Baltimore in the Whirled Series in 7 games, so there are some expectations at play here. So far, they're underperforming, sitting 1 game under .500 at 16-17, 6.5 games behind the surging New York Black Yankees in the Bill James Division. At the most zoomed out, their pitching staff has been average, and while the offense has some significant bright spots, there are some issues to address. THE OFFENSE It's a decent offense overall, with some power (but nobody in double figures in HR yet) and overall excellent OBP numbers (Detroit is 3rd in the league in walks). There is not much speed, outside of Ty Cobb, who has 13 steals. #What's Going Right Ty Cobb. Remember, he's still only 21 years old. And he's slashing 398/462/858, leading the league in all 3 categories, and tied for the team league in HR with 9. 3B Bob Bailey also has 9 and has been the Wolverines' 2nd best hitter amongst their starters. Hank Greenberg and Al Kaline have been solid, if not spectacular, and Charlie Gehringer and Joe Wood have done better than expected in carrying large loads in the IF as rookies. Professional hitter Juan Beníquez has professionally hit, slashing 395/511/526 in limited appearances as the club tries to open up more playing time for him. The challenge is that he plays the same positions as Cobb, Greenberg, and Bailey. But there are some ways to juggle the pieces to get his bat in the lineup a bit more often. #What's Not Going Right The Wolverines are on the verge of abandoning their 3 catcher strategy. Ed Bailey and Ernie Lombardi are doing fine--not much more than that, but fine--but Bill Carrigan, who hit over .300 last year, is wallowing away with a .087/125/130 slash line. Mix that with the clear needs for more depth at either SS or CF or both, and Carrigan's time with the big league club may be limited. Tony Phillips may be showing his age, with the 39 year old--last year's sparkplug--managing only a 168/267/287 slash line. Another key to last year's team, Oscar Gamble, is doing only slightly better at 207/349/276. Gamble is still looking for his first homerun of the year, and while that OBP is nice, it's not what the Wolverines really need from him. THE PITCHING #What's Going Right The bullpen has been excellent, with Mike Henneman producing saves at the same rate as last year, but this time being dominating as he's done so, with an ERA and WHIP both under 1.00. Henneman has 9 saves, tied for the league lead, and both Chad Bradford and the surprising Billy Hoeft have been excellent getting to him. Pete Conway has been a pleasant surprise since being called up, and there is talk of him moving into the rotation as, across 16 appearances, he's arguably been the Wolverines' best pitcher. #What's Not Going Right The rotation is a hot mess. Nobody has more than 2 wins and only Charlie Root (2-3, 3.96) is really pitching well. Hal Newhouser has been OK, but Justin Verlander, Johnny Marcum, and especially Gene Conley have all struggled mightily. And it's not an illusion: the more advanced stats (FIP, SIERA) tell the same story of Root being alright and the rest being pretty poor. THE FARM SYSTEM TOP PROSPECTS \| MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM There's not a lot of immediate help at AAA on the mound. George Bechtel is off to a decent start, and is probably next in line to get a look. Wally Moses, Brady Clark, Wes Covington, and Tony Lazzeri have all been looked at as options, depending on what happens with Phillips. And, veteran gloveman George Davis should be back from injury this month. There's not a lot here, honestly. Logan Hensley is the highest rated arm in the system, and he's not great and teenage phenom Wander Franco is still a few years away, especially if Gehringer continues to develop. WHAT'S NEEDED The pitching to right itself and either Greenberg or Kaline to up their game, giving the team another top tier offensive threat to complement Cobb. Storylines To Watch Certainly Cobb and his assault on the triple crown. It's doubtful he can maintain the SLG that is required, but if you hit .400, all things are possible. Key Questions from Spring Training In their Season Preview, there were 3 Key Questions for Detroit. Here's an update on each. Who is the 5th Starter? Unfortunately, with the current spate of injuries, this is now who are the 4th and 5th starters, and the answers seem to be Pete Conway and unknown, which is not a great answer. Can they continue to carry 3 catchers? Not if Bill Carrigan continues to hit under .100. The MI is a concern. Yeah, it is, but Billy Nash and Joe Wood have done well, although the team is looking forward to the return of George Davis' glove later this month. FEATURED SERIES We're looking at 3 game set at the end of the week against the Baltimore Black Sox where the Wolverines will welcome the (now struggling) defending champs to Tiger Stadium for a 3 game set. Game One Johnny Marcum left the game with a back injury in the 3rd inning, allowing only a single hit. The bullpen struggled, with Ray Sadecki, George Bechtel, Pete Conway, and Billy Hoeft giving up 7 runs in just over 5 innings. Luckily, the Wolverines' offense pounded out 17 hits and 12 runs, including 7 tallies in the bottom of the 7th en route to a 12-7 victory. Ty Cobb and Ernie Lombardi had 3 hits each and Charlie Gehringer 4 RBIs. Chalk one up for the offense. This is sort of the peak of how Detroit can perform with the bat: a lot of hits spread up and down the lineup, a consistent ability to turn over multiple innings. It's also an example of how fragile their staff is. Sadecki debuted well, but neither he nor Bechtel look likely to stick around, and Buddy Napier--expected to be key in late innings--only lowered his ERA to 7.00 with his scoreless inning at the end. Marcum hit the DL after the game, with Conway likely to take his next start. BAL 7 (Wetteland 0-5, 2 B Sv; Hampson 1 H) @ DET 12 (Hoeft 1-0) HRs: BAL - Jacobson (1), Machado (9), Harper (5), Wallace (2); DET - Gehringer (6). Box Score Game Two Justin Verlander turned in the best start of his career, allowing only 1 hit over 8 innings while striking out 11 and walking 3, but the victory went to Mike Henneman as a sacrifice fly from Charlie Gehringer in the bottom of the 9th gave the Wolverines a 1-0 win over Baltimore. Henneman showed flashes of his old self, walking 2 in the 9th before getting out of a jam of his own creation. For the Black Sox, the game was worth more than the loss as Ned Garvin seemed to return to form with 6 shutout innings. This game was needed after the bullpen was stretched thin yesterday. Most of all, though, Verlander has always showed this talent, but never really put it together. He still needs to show he can do it consistently (his ERA fell to 4.64 with his 8 shutout innings here, which is fine, but not great), but it's a start. BAL 0 (Olson 0-1) @ DET 1 (Henneman 3-0) HRs: None. Box Score Game Three The Wolverines went for the sweep with Charlie Root facing off against Baltimore's Dennis Martínez. Neither ace was very good, with Detroit eventually building a 13-6 lead before the bullpen struggled to an eventual 13-10 win (and the series sweep). Al Kaline had 3 hits and Hank Greenberg, Oscar Gamble, Tony Phillips, and both Ed and Bob Bailey went deep for Detroit who overcame 3 hits from Frank Robinson and 5 RBI's from Dan McGann in the victory. See the comments from the first game: another excellent day offensively, with contributions up and down the lineup and 5 SB's to boot (from Joe Wood, Billy Nash, and Juan Beníquez, along with 2 from Ty Cobb). But Root's problems continue, and George Bechtel had another bad outing, giving up a bases loaded triple to McGann and creating the save situation for Chad Bradford. Still, a sweep is a sweep. Connie Johnson's recent hot streak keeps him in the rotation, but Jim Palmer moves to the bullpen with the surprising John Tudor taking Palmer's spot. Johnson is still on the edge, sitting with an ERA over 7.00 at the moment, but the real question for Baltimore is how Ned Garvin's return impacts their overall performance. Don Bessent was sent to AAA to get his stuff back together, with Justin Hampson being recalled. Garvin's first start was a little rough, but it got the job done as the Black Sox beat Miami 4-3. Garvin gave up 8 hits and 3 runs in 6+ innings, but Gregg Olsen, Buddy Groom, and Joe Beggs allowed only 1 hit in relief with Beggs notching his 5th save of the season. The Black Sox imploded, given up an 8-1 lead over the final 2 innings of a 9-8 loss to Miami. This wasted 2 homeruns from Manny Machado and a grand slam by Gavvy Cravath and, perhaps more concerning, saw Beggs depart with an undiagnosed injury. #Cleveland Spiders Mel Harder and Yordano Ventura were named to the Spiders' rotation, with Bob Feller retaining his spot in the bullpen for now. Lance Berkman went deep twice, leading the Spiders to a 9-4 victory over the Black Yankees. With 14 homeruns, Berkman now leads the WBL in dingers. Tris Speaker had 4 hits (including 2 homeruns), scored 5 runs, and drove in 4 and Berkman added 5 ribbies as Cleveland topped Memphis in a roller coaster affair. The Spiders had 17 hits in the 17-11 win, which went to Firpo Marberry, who improved to 2-0. Berkman continued to absolutely mash the ball with 3 homeruns in a 12-4 win over Memphis, giving him 17 on the year, and the league lead. Chuck Knoblauch had 5 hits, scored 5 runs, and drove in 3 with a WBL record 4 doubles. The Red Sox have still refused to name a 5th starter to their rotation. It was an unearned run, but it was all they needed, as Travis Shaw--pinch running for Wade Boggs--scored on a single to CF by Ted Williams in the bottom of the 9th, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 win over Portland. Len Barker, David Bush, and Andrew Miller combined to allow the Sea Dogs only 5 hits, with Miller evening his record at 2-2. #New York Black Yankees Eric Davis--11 homeruns, 24 RBI, 30 R--will miss 5-6 weeks with a torn abdominal muscle. The Black Yankees recalled veteran OF Hank Bauer to take his place on the roster, with Héctor López expected to get more time (some in CF, some in LF with Babe Ruth shifting to CF) in Davis' absence. The Black Yankees struck out 16 Angels in a 4-2 victory, although a poor outing by Aroldis Chapman eliminated the chance at a combined shutout. Mark Buehrle had his first rough outing of the year, failing to become the league's first 6 game winner and falling to 5-1. Paul Konerko went deep twice, the 2nd shot a walkoff job in the bottom of the 10th to give the American Giants a 5-4 win over Detroit. Akinori Otsuka will miss about 2 weeks with an elbow issue, weakening Chicago's bullpen significantly. Tom Williams was recalled. #Los Angeles Angels The Angels recalled Elmer "Mike" Smith from his rehab assignments. Not wanting to be without a lefty, Los Angeles retained Noah Lowry while demoting Anthony DeSclafani despite DeSclafani's better performance. With George Wright being recalled from his rehab assignment, Eddie Joost is waived with the Angels hoping to retain him in AAA. Mike Trout had himself a day: 5 hits, 3 homeruns (and 2 doubles), including a game-tying shot in the 9th and a game-winning walkoff in the bottom of the 13th. Doc Gooden improved to 4-2 on the year with a 4 hit shutout of the Black Yankees. 4 RBI's from Steve Garvey--including his 3rd homerun of the season--accounted for all of the Angels' runs, more than enough to support Gooden, who whiffed 7 and walked none. #Miami Cuban Giants Freddie Fitzsimmons horrific start to the year (2-4, 8.17) has cost him his rotation spot, with Ed Brandt being named Miami's #4 starter. Their 5th rotation slot remains open. Julio Rodríguez was recalled from his rehab assignment, with the Cuban Giants (finally?) deciding that Minnie Miñoso would be better served with time at AAA. Rodríguez' return (and Miñoso's departure) resulted in a bunch of lineup juggling for Miami, as their OF remains quite crowded. Rodríguez went 2 for 4 in his return as the Cuban Giants fell to Baltimore, 4-3. The Cuban Giants came back from a 9-1 deficit in the 8th inning to beat Baltimore, 9-8. José Canseco went deep in the 8th and the 9th and Rodríguez in the 9th. Throw in a pinch-hit 2-run double from Gary Sheffield and you have a massive comeback for a shocking victory. Needing a starter, Fitzsimmons' continued battering led to his being sent to AAA with Lou Fette being recalled. Al Oliver fractured his foot, and will miss about 5 weeks, with Carlos Morán recalled from AAA. #Portland Sea Dogs Jeff Cirillo headed back to AAA with Rogers Hornsby's return from a rehab assignment. Walter Johnson was magnificent, allowing only a homerun through 8 innings before being chased by a single in the 9th in a 3-1 victory. Johnson evened his record at 3-3 with a 13 strikeout performance, walking none and lowering his ERA to 2.79. #San Francisco Sea Lions It was bullpen rejigger week for the Sea Lions, with San Francisco sending Bobby Seay, Steve Ontiveros, and Nick Altrock to AAA, with Tom Brewer, Mel Stottlemyre Sr, and Jim Devlin all being promoted. With both Bump Hadley and Watty Clark struggling, those 3, along with Dennis Eckersley, have to all be considered as auditioning for rotation slots. Helped by Reggie Jackson's 13th homerun, Hadley, Devlin, Ken Howell, and Rod Beck combined on a 4 hit shutout, leading the Sea Lions to a 2-0 win over Chicago. Frank Knauss became the league's first 6 game winner with a 2 hit shutout, striking out 10 en route to a 2-0 victory over Ottawa. Solo homeruns from Duke Snider and Pedro Guerrero were all Knauss needed to move to 6-1 on the year. #Homestead Grays Daniel Hudson and Carlos Zambrano are both struggling mightily, but both hold their roster spots for now. It's assumed that one will go down when Corey Kluber comes back from injury; it's likely the other will follow shortly thereafter unless something turns around. Francisco Liriano tossed a 2-hit shutout, leading the Grays to a 5-0 win over Kansas City. Liriano walked 4 and whiffed 8, and was helped along with homeruns from Mike Epstein and Willie Stargell. Owen Wilson, struggling to regain his from from last season, will miss about a month and a half with a separated shoulder. OF Goose Goslin was recalled from AAA to take Wilson's role as lefty OF off the bench. Doug Drabek--perhaps the Grays' best hurler in the early going--hit the DL with a sore wrist. Drabek should only miss a couple starts, but still. Brickyard Kennedy was recalled from AAA. Kennedy pitched well for Brooklyn last season in limited opportunities, but at 35, was released by the Royal Giants in February. #New York Gothams Brandon Crawford hit the shortest homerun of the day, but it was enough to give the Gothams a 6-5 walkoff victory in 12 innings over Brooklyn. In great news for the Gothams, Brian Wilson saw his first action of the year, giving up 1 hit and striking out 3 in 1.2 innings. The win went to Mike Norris, who improved to 2-0 with 2+ perfect innings. Willie Mays went deep twice and Carl Furillo might have staved off his release with his first homerun of the year as the Gothams beat the House of David, 7-5. Benny Kauff went deep twice, giving him 10 on the year, as the Gothams beat the House of David, 7-3. #Ottawa Mounties It was assumed that Ryan Dempster would lose his role as closer when Tom Henke returned. The surprise came when the Mounties moved Dempster to AAA, along with Dupee Shaw, as both Henke and Johnny Podgajny were recalled from their rehab assignments. #Philadelphia Stars Tim Belcher was sent to AAA with John Burkett being recalled as the Stars try to address their bullpen. Joe Rogan tossed a complete game, 2-hit shutout as the Stars beat Birmingham, 7-0. He also drove in 2 while Art Fletcher and Willie Davis had 3 hits each, with Fletcher driving in 4. Rogan was again the star, delivering a walkoff 2 run single to lead the Stars, who scored 6 runs over the final 3 innings, to a 7-6 victory over Birmingham. Ted Kluszewski went deep twice in the game and Burkett was excellent in his debut, delivering 2+ innings of 1 hit relief with the victory going to Ted Kennedy, now 2-1 on the year. Birmingham has some infield questions to answer, but for the time being, will live with Hank Aaron (far better suited to the OF) being their only alternative at 2B to Cupid Childs. Larry Benton will miss about a year with elbow surgery. Bill Phyle was recalled, assumedly for a longer period than the first time, during which he saw no action. #Houston Colt 45's David Clyde--out since early last season--started an injury rehab assignment. Roger Clemens had a poor start, leaving him unable to become the league's first 6 game winner, but Jimmy Wynn's second dinger (and 4th run scored) of the game was a walkoff shot in the bottom of the 11th inning. It was a wild game, as homers by George Brett and Craig Biggio (pinch-hitting) kept the game going in the bottom of the 10th and 11th innings. Wynn again hit 2, but this time, after a 7 run comeback, the Colt 45's couldn't pull it off, losing 11-9 to the House of David in another worryingly bad start from Roy Oswalt. #Indianapolis ABC's George Foster's 4th homerun of the year was a grand slam in the top of the 9th, leading the ABC's to a sudden 4-2 victory over Ottawa. Oscar Charleston had 5 hits and Adam Dunn crushed a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the 10th as the ABCs came from behind to top Birmingham, 7-5. #Wandering House of David Kerry Wood took Wade Miley's spot in the House of David's rotation, and Orlando Cabrera was moved to AAA to clear space for Frank Grant's return from a rehab assignment. Frank Chance had 4 steals but the House of David was unable to hold onto several leads, falling to Houston in 11 innings. Miley was pressed into an emergency start ... and immediately made everyone question their decisions, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run in 7 innings in clearly his best start of the year. It was an encouraging game for the House of David: Grant had 2 hits in his debut, Anthony Rizzo went deep twice, and Elrod Hendricks (2 hits, 1 HR) and Sammy Sosa (2 hits) showed signs of breaking out of their funks. Ernie Banks went deep twice and the House of David withstood a massive comeback by Houston, holding on for an 11-8 victory. After rough outings from Rick Reuschel and CC Sabathia, Fergie Jenkins, Ed Bauta, and Bruce Sutter shut it down, allowing only 2 hits over the last 3+ innings. Banks did it again, hitting 2 homeruns in a 7-6 victory over the Gothams. Sosa had 2 homeruns as well, including the game winning shot in the bottom of the 10th. The House of David would be encouraged by Wood's first start of the year, in which he pitched 6 innings, fanning 10. Pujols beat out the House of David's Ernie Banks, who had 7 homeruns and drove in 14, and Scott Rolen of the Philadelphia Stars who posted a 1.997 OPS, hitting .474 with 6 dingers and 8 RBIs. #Team Performance The New York Black Yankees (Bill James Division) and the Kansas City Monarchs (Marvin Miller Division) continue to be the only teams above .600, while Birmingham (in the basement of the Marvin Miller Division) and defending champs Baltimore are both at 13-26, tied for the worst record in the league, and a 1-9 record in their last 10 games has seen the Memphis Red Sox (in the Bill James Division along with Baltimore) plummet to a .378 percentage. Makonnen All Star Reserve Join Date: May 2020 Posts: 913	TWIWBL 64.2: Spotlight on the Miami Cuban Giants For our second team spotlight, we head down to Florida to check in on the Miami Cuban Giants. As a reminder, the Cuban Giants have rights to players from the Marlins, the Devil Rays, and the Brewers, along with players born in Cuba. HOME PAGE \| ROSTER \| POSITIONAL STRENGTH \| LEADERS This is a young team building towards the future. They've clearly improved since last year, but still sit 3 games behind .500 at .462, 5 games behind San Francisco in the Cum Posey Division. A .500 record would be an excellent result from the season and it feels, like it often does, like that depends on a pretty significant improvement on the mound. THE OFFENSE The lineup is a bit weird--there's no clear leadoff batter, there's not a lot of OBP to build around, etc. But top-to-bottom, they can pretty much rake, and that counts more than specific lineup construction. The Cuban Giants are 3rd in the AL in homers, 4th in runs scored, and 5th in OPS while being 9th in OBP. #What's Going Right The OF has been spectacular, with José Canseco and the surprising Ryan Braun combining for 29 homeruns, each with an OPS over 1.000. And in CF, while rookie Julio Rodríguez started hot, it was sort of assumed that he would have a hard time in his return from injury. Not so much: Rodríguez is slashing 361/361/778. It's still fewer than 10 games for the youngster, so a long way to go, but for now he looks legit. Add Jim Thome's 11 to Canseco and Braun and Miami has 3 players in double digit longballs. That trio has forced Yasiel Puig, with an OPS near .900 and Alejandro Oms into accepting reduced playing time, although Oms' glove finds a way. And that's not mentioning the red hot Gary Sheffield whose recent streak has pushed his OPS over .970 or the steady production from Robin Yount at SS. Or Martín Dihigo, who continues to be among the most promising defensive talents the game has ever see, and is now showing at least something at the plate. #What's Not Going Right Prize off-season acquisition Iván Rodríguez hasn't gotten his OPS over .600 and his backup, Smoky Burgess--a stalwart bat last year--has hit even worse. But essentially, the offense has gone very, very right. THE PITCHING There is talent here ... but very little production. #What's Going Right Hmm. José Méndez (3-1, 4.53) looks like he's growing into his role at the front of the rotation. Sandy Consuegra was pretty much unhittable until a recent rough outing brought him back to earth. Still, Consuegra is 1-2 on the year with 3 saves, 2 holds, and a 3.38 ERA, leading the Cuban Giants' bullpen. Kenshin Kawakami has been surprisingly brilliant since his recall, with a 1.02 ERA over 17+ innings. Then things start to get a little bumpy. Cole Hamels has been solid, but they need more from him and Ricky Nolasco, while firmly set as the closer, isn't as solidly dependable as you might like. #What's Not Going Right Everything else, but perhaps most of all Ramón Martínez, who was expected to be at the very front of Miami's rotation and instead is now 0-6 with an ERA over 7. And in the bullpen, both Adonis Terry and Barry Latman are in danger of heading to AAA if their performances don't improve. Overshadowing everything else, there is the loss of Camilo Pascual, whose knee injury will keep him out for most, if not all, of the season. Pascual was doing fine before injury, but not living up to his ace billing. Still, for a pitching starved team, it's a big loss. THE FARM SYSTEM TOP PROSPECTS \| MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM At 20 years old, Julio Rodríguez certainly seems to be coming good. Behind him, there is some decent talent here, it's just all a ways away with only perhaps U Bert Campeneris or 1B Richie Sexson showing the potential to help out this year. (But, it must be said, Campaneris and Sexson are really lower ceiling versions of players already in Miami--Dihigo and Thome, respectively.) But Miami isn't really planning for this year, and the trio of Josh Beckett, Jon Matlack, and Luis Tiant Sr. seem likely to help at some point. The problem is there is a lack of truly high end talent here. Miami is likely to regret the Vladimir Guerrero trade at some point, especially if Pudge fails to turn it around offensively. WHAT'S NEEDED The pitching just needs to improve to adequacy for the Cuban Giants to have a successful season. And, of course, they have to be smart in their dealings as likely sellers at both trade deadlines, with Consuegra, Kawakami, and Nolsaco being the most attractive veterans on the team). Storylines to Watch Key Questions from Spring Training How does the rest of the staff fill out? This has morphed into how does all of the staff fill out? Pascual is out and Freddie Fitzsimmons--who was so promising last year--is at AAA. Méndez and Hamels are fine, but yet to live up to their potential (remember, Hamels is 25 and Méndez only 23), and Martínez--even younger at 22--looks more like a project than a finished product. Can the continued development of Eustaquio Pedroso* and Martín Dihigo as two way players bear enough fruit to warrant continuing the experiment?* In a word ... maybe. Pedroso is pitching alright, but hitting very poorly (although he has shown an ability to get on base, always a plus), while Dihigo has yet to take the mound. So the jury is still very much out. FEATURED SERIES The Cuban Giants play 6 games against the Chicago American Giants this week--3 at home and 3 in the Windy City. We'll focus on the home games that open the week. Projected Starters Chicago starter listed first. David Price (2-2, 4.38) @ José Méndez (3-1, 4.53) Ben Sheets (0-3, 5.59) @ Cole Hamels (4-2, 4.25) Tricky Nichols (3-3, 5.19) @ Ramón Martínez (0-6, 7.03) Game One The Cuban Giants seem intent on proving that last year was a fluke and they belong in the WBL. Games like this go a long way. José Méndez was solid through 7 innings, allowing only 2 runs and improving to 4-1, but the story was really the offense, which pounded out 20 hits in the 19-7 win. The Cuban Giants were led by Ryan Braun's 3 homeruns (tying the WBL record) and Eustaquio Pedroso's 2, as well as solo shots from Julio Rodríguez, Iván Rodríguez, Robin Yount, and Gary Sheffield. Braun drove in 5, and Pedroso and Pudge 3 each while Braun and Julio Rodríguez scored 3 times each. Pedroso's 2 dingers were his first 2 of the year, while Braun's 3 gave him 17 on the season, moving him into 2nd place in the league. CAG 7 (Price 2-3) @ MCG 19 (Méndez 4-1) HRs: CAG - Fiore (6), Fisk (6); MCG - Pedroso 2 (2), Braun 3 (17), J. Rodríguez (6), I. Rodríguez (5), Yount (8), Sheffield (9). Box Score Game Two With Cole Hamels needing a day of rest, the Cuban Giants turned to the surprising Kenshin Kawakami for the start against Chicago's Ben Sheets. Kawakami was good for 4 innings, then clearly began to be bothered by a foot injury which eventually drove him out of the game. But the damage was done, as the American Giants scored 5 in the 5th and 5 in the 6th en route to a 12-7 win. For Miami, Julio Rodríguez continued his torrid streak with another 2 homeruns while raising his batting average to .404. CAG 12 (Sheets 1-3) @ MCG 7 (Kawakami 2-1) HRs: CAG - Thomas (7), Fisk (7), Fiore (7); MCG - Canseco (16), Thome (12), J. Rodríguez 2 (8). Hamels' performance reflected Miami's challenges with last-season's star in-season acquisition: a perfect 3 innings and 9 strikeouts in 5 plus, but also 5 runs allowed. Not bad, but not exactly good either. Still, if the bullpen can shut the other team down, Miami will do well. As encouraging for the Black Sox was the effort from Connie Johnson, who pitched 6 scoreless innings in the victory. The Black Sox pounded out 16 hits, including 2 homeruns from Manny Machado, in an easy 13-4 win over Cleveland. #Cleveland Spiders Jake Stahl--he of 26 homeruns last year--was sent to AAA to work out his swing, with the Spiders recalling C Victor Martinez, who is expected to pressure Louis Santop and John Ellis for playing time. #Detroit Wolverines With a staff beset by injuries, the Wolverines have moved Pete Conway into the rotation, while keeping the 5th slot undecided for the time being. They also sent George Bechtel and Ray Sadecki to the minors, recalling Mickey Lolich and Wilson Álvarez from AA. Al Kaline went deep twice, but it was far from enough as the Wolverines fell to the Black Yankees, 15-9. Chili Davis did the same the next day, hitting 2 out in an 8-6 loss to New York. #Memphis Red Sox Vern Stephens' rough start to the year has cost him his starting job, ceding the SS role for Memphis to Dobie Moore. Dean Chance was returned to AAA in exchange for Nixey Callahan as the Red Sox found themselves short on rested starters. #New York Black Yankees Gary Lavelle was put on the DL, with Herm Wehmeier being recalled from AAA for a spot start. Mickey Mantle drove in 6 and 5 Black Yankees went deep in a 15-9 win over Detroit. Hank Bauer, Tom Herr, Mike Schmidt, Don Mattingly, and Derek Jeter joined Mantle in hitting homeruns, with Herr and Bauer each scoring 3 times as New York pounded out 18 hits. A rain delay forced Walsh, who improved to 3-1, out of the game in the 8th, but Tom Williams pitched a perfect 9th to preserve the shutout. Much ridiculed Jack Doyle was hit by a pitch 3 times in the game, which is, you know, something. #Miami Cuban Giants Lou Fette headed back to AAA with Braden Looper's activation from the DL. The promising Kenshin Kawakami will miss over a month with a sprained ankle, with Steven Wright recalled from AAA. Ryan Braun went deep twice--giving him 20 on the year--as the Cuban Giants came from behind to beat Chicago, 4-3. José Méndez was fantastic, but didn't figure in the decision while Sandy Consuegra was roughed up, but got the win with Ricky Nolasco earning his 7th save of the season. #Portland Sea Dogs Two homeruns from Gil Hodges and an excellent start from Walter Ball led Portland to an 11-1 win over the Black Yankees. Last year's reserve darling, Gary Pettis, was sent to AAA. No matter your speed and no matter your glove, a .400 OPS can do that. Jeff Burroughs was recalled from a rehab stint. Rogers Hornsby and Bobby Murcer went deep twice as the Sea Dogs trounced the Angels, 11-4. Ken Griffey, Jr., Jim Fregosi, Kent Hrbek, and Joe Mauer also went deep for the Sea Dogs as Bert Blyleven improved to 2-1 on the year despite being roughed up for 9 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings. #San Francisco Sea Lions Reggie Jackson hit 2 homeruns and Denny Walling went 4 for 5 with a dinger in his WBL debut as the Sea Lions pounded out a 15-4 victory over the Wolverines. San Francisco had 6 homeruns among their 21 hits, with Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, and Turkey Stearnes joining Walling and Jackson. Not to be outdone, Jack Clark went deep 3 times, but it wasn't enough as the Sea Lions fell to Detroit, 7-6. Lefty Grove put it all together with a complete game, 4 hit shutout of Memphis, striking out 9 and improving his record to 5-4. The win was costly for Brooklyn, as Jackie Robinson was forced to the DL with a sprained ankle. Veteran Frank Isbell was recalled from AAA. Ray Dandridge went deep twice, but it wasn't enough as the House of David prevailed over the Royal Giants 6-5 in 10 innings. Mike Piazza duplicated Dandridge's feat, homering twice in a loss, as the House of David triumphed once more, 9-6. #Homestead Grays Mike Epstein went deep twice and Josh Gibson added a grandslam as the Grays built a big lead against the Colt 45's and held on for a 15-10 victory. Gibson drove in 6 and Epstein scored 4 times and Bob Friend pitched barely well enough to even his record at 2-2. Rick Reichardt went deep twice leading the Grays to a 9-6 win over the Gothams. #New York Gothams The Gothams made some changes on the mound, deciding that Rube Waddell and Don Sutton just allow far too many homeruns. Waddell was moved to AAA with Sutton being removed from the rotation. Tony Mullane was recalled to take Waddell's spot. The Gothams were more reluctant to pull the trigger on the other saide of the roster, but with the quartet of Jimmy Sheckard, Eugenio Suárez, Carl Furillo, and Wes Westrum all struggling mightily, their hand may be forced soon enough. #Ottawa Mounties Roberto Alomar homered twice, each shot giving Ottawa the lead after scores from Philadelphia and the Mounties edged the stars, 5-3. Old Hoss Radbourn had a good outing, improving his record to 5-3, and Clark Griffith earned his first save. Larry Walker and Carlos Beltrán each went deep twice as the Mounties beat Philadelphia, 10-3. Walker did it again, going deep twice in support of another strong start from Bill Smith in a 6-1 victory over Houston. Walker now has 20 on the season, tying him for the league lead. #Philadelphia Stars Young Bill Gatewood was sent to AAA to work out his command with Fred Cambria being recalled. Makonnen All Star Reserve Join Date: May 2020 Posts: 913	TWIWBL 64.6: Marvin Miller Division #Birmingham Black Barons Desperate to address a disaster zone of a bullpen, the Black Barons sent Vic Willis and Warren Spahn to AAA, hoping they can get on track and/or their replacements, Fred Fussell and Charlie Morton, can step in with more effectiveness. #Houston Colt 45's Jason Castro's horrid start to the season has led to Houston swapping out backup catchers, with the much-maligned Jim O'Rourke being recalled from AAA. O'Rourke's first longball of the year was a walkoff job, as 2 homeruns from Tony Gwynn helped the Colt45's complete the comeback before O'Rourke finished the job in a 10-8 victory over Ottawa. Roger Clemens twirled a complete game gem as Houston topped Ottawa 7-1. Clemens improved his record to 6-0, allowing only 2 hits and a single unearned run and Andrés Galarraga delivered a key homerun. Pete Hill had 3 hits in the game, which also saw George Brett return to the DL with a hamstring issue. OF Johnny Damon was recalled from AAA. Damon delivered with 2 hits and a homerun in his WBL debut, but the game was carried by Jeff Bagwell, who went deep twice, scored 4 times, and drove in 5 as Houston demolished Ottawa 14-5. #Indianapolis ABC's Lefty James and Joe Morgan were recalled from their injury rehab assignments, with Lynn Breton and Denis Menke heading to AAA. The last was a bit of a surprise, but forced by Tommy Helms' fantastic performance with the ABC's. Despite a rough outing, Johnny Cueto became the first 7 game winner in the league, improving to 7-1 in a 9-8 victory over the Gothams. The Only Nolan, James, Jack Billingham, and Rob Murphy did enough in relief to preserve the win as Bob Bescher, Morgan, Joey Votto, and Jake Stenzel each went yard. #Kansas City Monarchs Boog Powell and Ducky Medwick each went yard twice as the Monarchs used a 6 run 8th to power an 11-4 win over Birmingham. Frank Castillo wasn't very good, but he was good enough to hold on for the victory, improving to 6-0 on the season. Later in the week, Castillo improved to 7-0 with a 4 hit shutout, striking out 14 (the most in the WBL this season) and walking none in a brilliant performance. Makonnen All Star Reserve Join Date: May 2020 Posts: 913	TWIWBL 65.2 Spotlight on the Los Angeles Angels A team still in search of identity, but you can see some reason for optimism. I mean, if you squint. The Angels inherit players from their namesake and from the New York Mets. HOME PAGE \| ROSTER \| POSITIONAL STRENGTH \| LEADERS The Angels sit at exactly .500, closer to last than to first in the Cum Posey Division (5 games behind division leaders San Francisco, 3.5 games out ahead of last place Portland). Honestly, a .500 finish is probably the goal for the year, so as far as that goes, they're on track. It's just hard to get all that excited about that. But you can see things happening for this team, both offensively and, if you look at the talent scattered throughout their minor league system, on the mound. THE OFFENSE There's a budding superstar here, surrounded by a fair number of question marks. That's not quite fair: Mike Trout is a budding superstar, but Bobby Grich and Doug Rader are both solid, Kal Daniels continues to demonstrate all the tools, and rookie OF Ichiro Suzuki looks set for a long WBL career. Currently, though, this offense is just about the definition of league average, sitting 9th or 10th in almost all statistical categories. #What's Going Right Trout is still not an elite power hitter, but every other part of his game is on point and Grich, who leads the team in HR with 10, produces far above the norm offensively for 2B. Veteran Carlos Delgado continues to deliver, and may end up being a pretty attractive trade piece if Los Angeles loses contact with the division leaders. George Wright's return from injury has helped to settle the situation at SS, but Wright will always struggle to add much with the bat. #What's Not Going Right Steve Garvey's continued struggles may send him down to the minors, and more and more it looks like his future will be at 1B, not 3B. C is a mess, with the platoon of AJ Pierzynski and Jeff Torborg struggling enough that the team plans to recall John Stearns from AAA this week. With Suzuki, Wright, Garvey, and Mark Ellis all seeing at least semi-regular playing time, the Angels have a lot of players who are pretty allergic to taking a walk. THE PITCHING Los Angeles has somehow put together a top end pitching staff. It's not likely to last top to bottom, but the higher end talent is very encouraging. #What's Going Right Doc Gooden has been spectacular, with the 22 year old sporting a 2.60 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP, but only a 4-3 record across 8 starts. Last year's ace, Gerrit Cole, has struggled a bit, but the contributions of Tom Seaver (3-2, 3.88) and Brett Anderson (3-2, 4.60), along with the steady innings eating ability of Pud Galvin, has given Los Angeles a very strong rotation. And Cole, at 25, is the veteran of the bunch. Roy Patterson, Ross Reynolds, and Mike Smith have been excellent in the middle innings, and Joe Nathan has 8 saves. Perhaps most of all, the Angels decision to send Nolan Ryan and Chuck Finley to the minors seems to have paid off, with each of them performing well at AA. #What's Not Going Right Not a lot, although the back end of the bullpen has been a little weak, with Francisco Rodríguez and Julio Teheran struggling and Nathan's peripheral numbers being far rougher than his record may indicate. Lefty Noah Lowry has been very ineffective, and his holding on to his roster spot by his fingernails. Derrek Lee has struggled, and is in danger of losing his job to Wally Joyner, although that would leave the Angels with 2 lefties at 1B. THE FARM SYSTEM TOP PROSPECTS \| MINOR LEAGUE SYSTEM This is not a great system, although if you count Ryan and Finley (who passed their rookie limits last season) it looks much better. IF Xander Bogaerts and closer Bryan Harvey are probably the highest ceiling prospects, followed by IF Marcus Semien, professional hitter Babe Herman, and OFs Dwayne Murphy, Brian Nimmo, and Billy Hamilton. Of those, only Bogaerts is doing well. Veteran help is available at AAA in the form of OF Elmer Valo, Stearns, 1Bs Wally Joyner and Jack Hannifin, and 3B Pedro Álvarez. WHAT'S NEEDED The offense has to improve faster than the offense reverts to the mean. Storylines to Watch Key Questions from Spring Training Who is going to fill out the rotation and the bullpen? This has been resoundingly answered so far, with the pitching staff performing as well as any in the league. Will anyone step up at C? Not yet, no. We'll see if Stearns, who will replace Torborg, improves the situation here. FEATURED SERIES The Angels head to Memphis for 4 games to start the week; we'll follow those games as it will give us a chance to see the bulk of their rotation. But Roy Patterson and Lowry collapsed, giving up 5 runs, including a go-ahead 3 run shot by Manny Ramírez as Memphis claimed a come from behind victory. Los Angeles roared out of the gate, with back-to-back homeruns to lead off the game from Don Buford and Kal Daniels. Bobby Grich added a 2 run shot later in the inning, and the Angels were up 4-0. They touched Bill Doak for another run, leading 5-0 after 3.5. And then Tom Seaver began to struggle, giving up homeruns to Manny Ramírez in consecutive innings, tying up the ballgame at 5. After Ross Reynolds was forced from the game with a forearm issue, David Ortíz greeted Roy Patterson with a solo shot to give the Red Sox a 6-5 lead. Bobby Grich hit his second of the game, taking Jonathan Papelbon deep in the 9th to tie it, but the Angels bullpen wasn't up to the task, eventually surrendering a bases loaded single to Mookie Betts for the walkoff win for Memphis. Game Three Don Buford led off the game with a homerun for the second consecutive game, staking Gerrit Cole to an early 1-0 lead. Cole wasn't up for the task, giving up 1 in the bottom of the first and a whopping 6 in the 2nd before being chased from the game by a Mookie Betts blast in the 4th. The Angels offense did well against Len Barker, touching him for 6 runs in 6 innings, and staying close enough that a George Wright homerun (!) in the 8th could make it a 1 run game, 11-10 Memphis. They put two runners on base against Heath Bell in the 9th, but were unable to break through, and the Red Sox take the first 3 games of the series. Wade Boggs had 3 doubles for Memphis and scored 4 times. LAA 10 (Cole 1-5) @ MEM 11 (Barker 2-6; Callahan 1 H; Bell 2 Sv) HRs: LAA - Buford (10), Wright (3); MEM - Ramírez (12), Betts (5). Box Score Angels 3B Doug Rader had to leave the game, but isn't likely to require a trip to the DL. There was great news for Memphis as well, as Dobie Moore will only miss about a day with his bruised shin. Game Four Don Buford didn't lead off this one with a homer: he waited until the 5th inning to launch a 3 run shot, putting the Angels up, 3-2. Steve Garvey and Ichiro Suzuki added 2 RBIs each in the 6th, increasing the lead to 7-2. Doc Gooden had given up a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 1st to David Ortíz, but had shut Memphis down after that, lasting 7 innings in a very strong outing. Scott Rice relieved Gooden for his WBL debut ... and it did not go well, with Rice giving up 3 runs, allowing the Red Sox to close the gap to 9-5. With a 4 run lead, the Angels turned to Francisco Rodríguez ... who promptly loaded the bases to start the bottom of the 9th. A walk to Ted Williams made it 9-6, and brought in Los Angeles' closer, Joe Nathan. Nathan whiffed two ... and then gave up a walkoff grand slam homerun to Billy Bryan, giving the Red Sox the series sweep. Buford--who had a great series--finished the game with 5 RBIs, giving him 3 homers and 7 RBIs over the 4 games.
