Overall, this game was not as close as the final score would indicate. Up 9 to 2 heading into the 7th inning, things got a little shaky before the bullpen could clean things up. On the day, the Boston Red Sox (45-37) prevailed over the visiting San Diego Padres (45-41) by a score of 10 to 6.
Kutter Crawford (6-6) got the nod for the Red Sox and while he was roughed up for 6 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7 in 6 2/3 innings of work, he did notch the victory; Game Score 42. Kenley Jansen worked 1 1/3 innings in which he permitted 2 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch before turning the ball over to Liam Hendriks who pitched a scoreless final inning. Leading the way at the plate were Tristan Casas (2 for 4, Double, Homerun, Run, 4 RBI, Walk), Ceddanne Rafaela (3 for 4, 3 Doubles, 2 Runs, 2 RBI), Marcelo Mayer (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, Stolen Base), and Masataka Yoshida (1 for 4, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, Walk). Yu Darvish (5-8) was tagged with the loss after serving up 7 earned runs on 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4 in 3 1/3 innings of play; Game Score 17. Adrian Morejon was ineffective in relief, as he permitted 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 2 2/3 innings. Enyel De Los Santos pitched a scoreless 2 innings to stop the damage. Leading the Padres offense were Xander Bogaerts (1 for 3, Double, 2 Runs, 3 RBI, 2 Walks, Stolen Base), Jackson Merrill (2 for 5, Triple, Run, 2 RBI, Stolen Base), and Jurickson Profar (2 for 4, Triple, Run). Player of the Game: Tristan Casas (Season: #2) AL East Standings: 1st Place, 1 Game Lead

Game 83: San Diego Padres vs. Boston Red Sox
A nice win for the home team today, as the offense hit the ball well. In picking up the 14 to 4 victory, the Boston Red Sox (46-37) outmatched the visiting San Diego Padres (45-42).
Garrett Whitlock (4-6) picked up the win but again had a shaky performance in which he allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 in 6 innings of play; Game Score 46. Isiah Campbell (SV 1) picked up the save for his 3 innings of scoreless relief work. I am not very confident in games Whitlock starts and have started to consider moving him to the bullpen and bring Pivetta back into the rotation. The Red Sox offense was firing well today, led by Tristan Casas (1 for 2, Homerun, 4 Runs, 2 RBI, 2 Walks, Hit-by-Pitch), Jarren Duran (3 for 4, 3 Doubles, 3 Runs, Walk), Rafael Devers (2 for 5, Double, Triple, 3 RBI), Marcelo Meyer (2 for 5, Double, Run, 4 RBI), and Masataka Yoshida (3 for 4, Double, 3 Runs, RBI, Walk). The Padres turned to Joe Musgrove (5-9) for the start, but he lasted just 2 innings after serving up 7 earned runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batsman; Game Score 10. The combined relief work of Wandy Peralta (3 earned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk) and Stephen Kolek (4 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walk) were ineffective. Former Red Sox Chris Martin pitched a scoreless final inning. At the plate, Fernando Tatis Jr. (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), Luis Campusano (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), and Jake Croenworth (2 for 4, 2 RBI, Stolen Base) had a solid day. Player of the Game: Tristan Casas (Season: #3) AL East Standings: 1st Place, 1 Game Lead

Arraez Extends Hitting Streak
Miami Marlins All-Star Luis Arraez extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 25 with a 3 for 4 night. Arraez is a talented hitter and will be fun to see how long he can keep this going.

American League Standings
With the start of July here, a snapshot of how the American League standings are shoring up. It is a very competitive race in each division, with the Kansas City Royals (49-38) possessing the AL's best record. Wow, the Angels (31-52) are really bad!

American League Batting Leaders
A look at the American League batting leaders. While Rafael Devers and Yordan Alvarez are having MVP-like seasons, Bobby Witt Jr. is a beast and his 6.1 WAR is the best in baseball.

National League Batting Leaders
Now that Alex Bohm has cooled off, the race for the NL MVP award is wide-open. Of Note, Luis Arraez is not only leading the NL with a .337 batting average, he is riding a 26-game hitting streak.

American League Pitching Leaders
The American League pitching leaders have well-recognized names at the top of the categories list. While Jacob deGrom and Framber Valdez are getting much of the attention, don't sleep on Seth Lugo.
