For about the last 12 to 18 months of his life 'Howdy' Groskloss was the oldest living major leaguer. He passed away at age 100 years, 3 months in July 2006. He played just three years in the majors (1930-1932).
I believe he studied medicine and became a doctor in his post-playing days.

This photo shows Howdy at Age 99 in March of 2006. He would turn 100 the following month. He did indeed go into a career in medicine, capped by a position as a teaching gynecologist.

Those Butch Alberts images in the latest Topps Vault posting led me to this six-year old observation here, namely that the 1980 Topps Rookies card supposedly showing Blue Jays' pitcher Butch Edge actually depicted their brief DH/3B from 1978, Butch Alberts:

Doing a google image search for Edge, it appears there's a paucity of major league images of him (except a bunch of Topps images of him with the Brewers, for whom he never appeared). I happened to get him for a not very inspiring pose on a dreary afternoon at the very end of the 1979 season, if it's of any use:

For anyone who tries to help with Consolo, Gabler, and Semproch, they seem to be non-roster invitees to spring camps in those respective years. I found that Semproch and Gabler were on the Indians' non-roster invitee lists in The Sporting News in 1962 and 1963 respectively, and an article mentioned that Consolo was given a trial in the Indians' 1963 major league camp before he quite pro baseball. None of the three was on the Indians' spring roster in either year, and none played for the Indians during the regular season.

Topps threw me a screwgie with the new batch. #653 looked a lot like Brian Allard (who was at 650-651), but the image shows a lefty and Allard was a righty. Of course, that pre-supposes that I would recognize Brian Allard to begin with--far from a sure thing. Finally looked at the image close enough to realize that "Rawlings" was backwards on the glove. So flip it. Flip it good.

Over at Baseball Birthdays, they are going like gangbusters to ID the released Topps Vault images and checklisting them in an easy-to-use manner.

But this guy has stumped everyone. His two images GQ 578-579, are between Willie Mays Aikens and Hank Aguirre. Someone out there knows him...

Looks a bit like Aguirre, although it's a bit unusual to show a pitcher hitting.

If not him, maybe career minor leaguer James Armstrong? He was in the Cubs system in the late sixties, so maybe. Only pics I could find to compare were these two team photos: 1969 Indianapolis Indians & 1971 Trois-Rivieres Aigles, which were both rather inconclusive:

Depicted during his days as a Cubs coach (1972-1974). He's hitting grounders or fly balls to fielders. I believe the slightly browned quality to the image dates it to Spring Training 1972.

Updated: on second glance it's clear that's a fungo bat.

It sure looks as Hank Aguirre. Probably, Topps asked him for an "ironic" batting pose. I remember him going something like 0 for 60 for the Tigers, almost all SO.

On Wikipedia, they added this on his career batting performance: "Aguirre had a reputation as one of baseball's worst-hitting pitchers. He had an .085 lifetime average, going 33-for-388 at the plate, with no home runs, striking out 236 times while drawing 14 walks."

Ooops! I think Merkle came with the right explanation....Thanks!
