Guillermo Velasquez error???

This 1992 Bowman card (no 698) has puzzled me for quite some time. On both front and back, the player is identified as Guillermo Velasquez. But he surely does not look like Velasquez (or am I getting too old...). I checked Beckett Almanac (2014 Ed.) and Lemke's 2007 Standard catalog....Both list him as Velasquez too. I searched the net...still the same...no mention of an error. Velasquez was a lefthanded hitter, while the player pictured seems to hit righthanded. I've added other cards of the real Velasquez ('93 Topps, '93 Donruss and '94 Stadium Club) and cinemaodyssey also posted him on this thread (http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3324820) ...clearly not the same guy. The best resemblance I could find (really not sure about it) for this player, is Thomas Howard (Padres 1990-92), who was a switch-hitter. Topps Vault has this picture in its GE folder, number 789...in a V alphabetical series.
If I am right about this card, it amazes me that both Beckett and Lemke have not come up with the error...23 years after the initial printing!

Alan Schmelz 1967

This is more in the form of a preview; I obtained a collection of color negatives from the '50s and '60s and among dozens of obscure guys I found as I dug into the images tonight, there he is - the Met Who Seemingly Never Was In Color.

I found and posted a candid shot of Schmelz with other Mets pitchers sitting on the turf in spring training 1968, but since neither Topps nor the Mets shot him then or during his cameo in the majors the preceding September, feast your eyes on the first color portrait of Schmelz discovered.

This is a camera snapshot off the negative sitting on a light box; I'll post the real deal after I get it scanned.

By the way unlike the candid shot, this is chronologically correct. The photos are dated March 3, 1967.

Jaw dropped. His face isn't lost in shadow, he's not picking his teeth with the tip of his tongue ... amazin'. I and the other Schmelzhunters of the world can't thank you enough.

Luis Arroyo - 1955 Rookie All-Star

Luis Arroyo is well-known for his years with the Yankees in the early 1960s. He was a 1961 all-star and that year led the American League in Saves, many of which came in relief of Whitey Ford, who after 10 years in the majors was finally able to have his first 20 win season.
I was surprised to find out that Arroyo had been an all-star once before in his rookie year of 1955 with the St. Louis Cardinals, when he was a starter. Arroyo had an excellent first half going 9-2 through the end of June and 10-3 at the all-star break. He slumped badly in the second half, however, finishing with an 11-8 record.
Does anyone have photos of Arroyo as a Cardinals rookie in 1955?.

The attached photo is from Marc Okkonen's book BASEBALL MEMORIES 1950-1959. Luis can also be found in a Cardinals uniform on his 1956 Topps card #64, which may be located easily via a Google search.

To me, the photo that you supplied is much better than Arroyo's '56 Topps.card. - Thanks!

Before He Became The Wolfman

Wrapping up the IDs on a near-forgotten folder (BH), I belatedly pegged Jayson Werth as an Orioles prospect as the cleanest of a clean-shaven kid. Even with the clue of having 2/5 of his name visible, I had trouble reconciling that baby face with the mega-beard Werth has sported in recent seasons. That said, it is also a better picture of him during his pre-rookie days than I've seen.

Here are the two holdouts for this Folder. Help, please:

Alan Schmelz 1967 Continued

The treasure trove has now produced 1968 images of Schmelz - action shots that show him in the uniform number he wore during his very brief major league career.

Again this is just a snapshot off a negative on a light box. I'll repost this after I get it scanned:

Jack Lamabe 1962

I may be misremembering but I think somebody was looking for this '60s reliever in a Cardinals, with whom he finished 1967.

This, obviously, is action from spring training 1968 before St. Louis dished him off to the Cubs.

Same collection, same jerryrigged image. I'll repost after I get it developed.

Can't imagine how this image didn't wind up on a Topps card.

He spent nearly two years there but you don't see a lot of him in color with the Padres:

Steve Jones 1967

Another gem from this new collection - they don't reproduce well off the light box but there are two terrific color Spring Training action images of the pitcher Steve Jones during his short stay with the Senators in 1968.

I think these are the first color images of him in that uniform. Once developed I think the one on the right will probably suffice all needs.

Fritz Peterson 1976 (in 1974)

Nothing unusual about seeing Peterson in a Yankee uniform - but there is seeing him in one, at Shea Stadium. He was dealt to Cleveland on April 28, 1974, after exactly one appearance for the Yanks in their temporary home.

This was the deal that netted New York Chris Chambliss for Peterson, Steve Kline, Tom Buskey, and Fred Beene. It is impossible to reconstruct the reaction in New York, which was of anger and horror that the Yankees had surrendered "half their pitching staff" just to get a first baseman. Just more proof that the fans and media are often wildly wrong.

I also never understood how the Yankees thought they were fixing things after the Peterson/Mike Kekich "life swap" by dealing Kekich to Cleveland in 1973, and then Peterson to the same team early in '74.
