Jim Callahan 1902
In 1902, Jim "Red" Callahan played a single game with the New York Giants in Chicago. According to Baseball-Reference, he had four at-bats, struck out three times, and walked once. He went on to play with McKeesport and Akron in 1905, returned to Akron from 1906 - 1908, moved to Springfield in 1909 and Rock Island in 1910. This mostly tracks his card in the Sporting News Player Card database, which shows him continuing with Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Grand Rapids in 1911, along with a brief stint with Pittsfield prior to the 1913 season.
Baseball-Reference shows Tim Callahan with Terre Haute and Grand Rapids in 1911. A search for Tim Callahan in the newspapers of the time turns up an article in the Akron Beacon Journal on February 21, 1907. It described how in Tim Callahan's one game in the majors with the Giants several years ago, he managed a walk to lead off the game. The player in the coaching box "happened upon a nickname for the little Irishman... [which] was not at all liked by Callahan." He "made free use of Tim's new handle" to the degree that Callahan got rattled and was thrown out stealing a yard away from the second base bag. For the rest of the game the players continued this, and following the game Callahan went back to his hotel room, and by the next morning he was gone. This article explicitly notes that "Tim's" name is James. A subsequent article from 1909 notes that Callahan's neighbor was allegedly Honus Wagner, who got Tim his shot with the Giants. Jim "Red" Callahan was from Carnegie, Pittsburgh. In 1913, Red Callahan, described as "the popular Carnegie boy", played with the Pittsburgh Federals. It seems likely this was the bookend to his professional career, which started with the game for the New York Giants in 1902. Pictures of both Tim Callahan, with Akron, and Callahan of the Federals are presented below, published in 1908 and 1913, respectively. |

Charlie Bell 1889
Tnfoto posted an image provided by SABR that purportedly depicts Charlie Bell on an unnamed baseball team. Unless someone knows more about the source of that image I do not believe it shows the major league ballplayer.
Bell gave up his ball playing career in the 1890s to become a Cincinnati police officer and served until 1925. He did, however, play on the Police Department baseball team and is pictured (along with Podge Weihe) in the 4/1/1906 edition of The Cincinnati Enquirer. I believe this was the last season he played for them. ** I have found a second, clearer image of Bell from the 9/10/1905 edition of The Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. He is pictured on the Police Department Nine. Last edited by cinemaodyssey; 08-21-2023 at 01:34 AM. Reason: Additional info |

William Gallagher 1896
I found a nice upgrade for Gallagher, who played briefly for the 1896 Phillies. He was a lifelong resident of Lowell, Massachusetts and got a nice obituary photo published in the 3/11/1950 edition of The Lowell Sun. They also wrote about his ball playing days. Our previous image of him came from a woodcut in 1895.

Dan Phelan 1890
Here is a clearer image of Phelan, who played for the 1890 Louisville champions for a short time. He was pictured in his obituary in the 7/30/1934 edition of The Waterbury Democrat.

Claude Jonnard 1921/Clarence "Bubber" Jonnard 1920
Conlon shot the twins in 1925, with Claude a Giant and Clarence a Pirate. From RMY, again.

Houston Jimenez, Pittsburgh Pirates 1987
Houston Jimenez was an OK field, no-hit-at-all shortstop of the 1980s. He had a long career in the Mexican League and had some good years with the bat there, but his major league OPS was a paltry .454. Jimenez got to the Minnesota Twins in 1983 mainly on the strength of a fast start at AAA Toledo and he was the Twins' most-regular SS for the next two seasons. The Twins wised up and released him early in 1986. The Pittsburgh Pirates were in the early years of the Jim Leyland era and Leyland and Syd Thrift were looking at a lot of people in the hopes of finding some hidden gems to rebuild the club. So, the Pirates took a chance and signed Jimenez. He got into just five games for the Bucs in '87 and went hitless. Here is the first image I have ever seen of Jimenez as a Pirate, courtesy of the excellent Fritsch card auction site on ebay. Now, if we could only find him as an Indian...

Tack Wilson Minnesota Twins 1983
Michael (Tack) Wilson, an outfielder from Shreveport, La., signed with the Dodgers in 1976. Wilson spent seven years in the Dodger chain. He posted good numbers but the Dodgers were choked with outfield prospects and so they parked Wilson at Albuquerque for three years. By 1982 Wilson was no longer as young as he had been so the Dodgers passed him to the Twins. Wilson made it from AAA Toledo to Minnesota in '83 on the strength of the best season of his minor league career (.815 OPS--he had better numbers at Albuquerque, but that park's numbers were inflated). The Twins gave Wilson a mere four AB's (one hit--.250 avg.) and never recalled him again. Why? Wilson wasn't a great outfielder but he could hit, he could draw a walk, he had good speed, he had doubles and triples power. But he was 27 years old and anyway the Twins in those days were addicted to big, slow white guys. Here, though, is the first shot I have ever seen of Wilson as a Twin, courtesy of Fritsch. Now, if we could only find him as an Angel...

Bob Owchinko Pittsburgh Pirates 1983
I have written about Owchinko before here so I won't repeat myself. Owchinko has long been unseen as a Pirate, at least in genuine images. Well, here he is at last, in a spring training shot from the Fritsch site on ebay. Yes, it's black and white and the resolution isn't great, but it's him.

Jimmie DeShong 1932
The Photo Pack has a low-resolution colorized pic of DeShong with the Yankees, but here is an action shot from Thorne Studios at 1934 Spring Training. (Once more from RMY.)
And here is DeShong in his big year of 1936 (18-10) for Washington, shot by Conlon. (courtesy of eBay) Can't find anything from his 1932 Athletics debut, though. Even his entry at the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame shows a Yankees pic. Last edited by Amazin69; 08-26-2023 at 04:20 PM. |

Orlin Collier 1931 UIN
Off the Pegasus UIN files comes Collier, who was in Tigers camp for 5 straight seasons but for some reason was never pictured in a Detroit uniform--until now. This one is from a 1939 Detroit Times newspaper retrospective on "Where is he now?"
