It always kind of bothered me that you changed the cities-in-divisions to how they were in the NFL so early in the first place. I liked the old layout of teams a lot before it was shifted (like how Washington and Baltimore were division rivals). I'm not usually a sucker for historical realism, but I feel like jumping to all-NFL here seems way too quick.

I've learned a lot about schedules in the meantime, so I think if I'd start now I could have chosen an alternative path, but I've gotten too attached to some of the players to do a fast forward or fresh start. There's definitely some benefits to having a plan before you start, and I definitely jumped into this one without much planning. So I definitely appreciate the feedback, but I guess I've backed myself into a corner with this one, so I could continue with a hybrid, move to the all NFL structures, or start fresh. While the third option is probably the best, I'm not ready to do that because I feel too invested to the current batch of players. So I think the best option is just to go for it and move to the current NFL nicknames. |

1883 Week 5
My 1883 revisions are complete, so it's on to week 5 -
ABC East We begin this week in Buffalo, where the Bills improved to 5-0 with a 12-6 win over the Titans to remain the only undefeated team in the league. SS Randy Mobley had a big game for the Bills going 4-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored on offense. Starting pitcher Zach Graziano also swung a hot bat going 2-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, and allowed just 2 earned runs in the complete game win. The Patriots moved over .500 on the year with a 4 run ninth inning to edge out the Jets 4-3. Pitcher Jaimie Biernat singled home the final run of the game to earn his third win of his season. ABC North Jim Britt of the Ravens won for the third time this season, despite 8 Raven errors. Britt allowed 9 hits and 2 earned runs, while Dave Foutz picked up 3 hits and drove in 3 runs while scoring two more. ABC West The first place Chargers have a bye week this week, which can be a bad thing for a team playing well. 2B Jimmy Wood is leading several offensive categories this year with a .529 batting average, 1.000 slugging percentage, and 3 triples. The 32 year old is almost single handedly carrying the Chargers offense, which is ranked 11th in the ABC. ABC South The Colts and Jaguars faced off in a 1-0 divisional battle with Dave Cartwright of the Jaguars pitching a complete game 4 hit shutout with 4 strikeouts and was named ABC Player of the Week for his efforts. Fred Dunlap doubled in the only run of the game for the Jaguars. NBC East Cameron Cotter pitched his best game of the season going 8 innings while allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, but it wasn't enough as the Cowboys fell 2-1 to the Giants. The Cowboys' offense was shut down by Al Atkinson and they stranded 10 men on base. NBC North Jim Conway of the Bears is just 24 years old, but continues to pitch like a veteran as he allowed just 2 runs in the Bears 4-2 win over the Vikings. Conway won his second game of the year while dropping his ERA to 2.14 for the year. Mike Iorio and Doug York each added two hits for the Bears. NBC West 39 year old Scott Young continues to prove he's not ready to surrender his starting pitcher's job to Guy Hecker just yet, winning for the third time this year as the Cardinals improved to 4-0 on the year with an 8-7 win over the winless Rams. Young was plagued by poor defense, with the Cardinals committing 11 errors in the game, including 3 by second baseman Mike Smith. NBC South Aaron Jackson rebounded from a poor start last week and held the Falcons to just three hits as he won the NBC Player of the Week, and the Saints improved to 4-1 on the season. Chris Fulmer drove in 2 runs for the Saints. |

The Jaguars bats were on full display today with Ned Hanlon homering, singling 3 times, and driving in 3 runs. 1883 Week 7
Weekly Recap Could we be looking at a Bills-Cardinals World Championship Game? The Bills continue to do what it takes to make that happen with a 6-3 win over the Packers. 37 year old newcomer Zach Graziano improves to 6-0 with a 1.83 ERA on the season. Mike Sullivan singled in a pair of runs for the Bills. The Cardinals had another sloppy defensive game, committing 10 errors, but remained undefeated with a 5 run ninth inning to edge the 49'ers 13-12. Lew Brown hit the walk off triple in the bottom of the ninth for the Cardinals, with Johnny Meyer picking up 4 hits and Jack Manning driving in 4 runs. The Panthers and Saints had a big first place battle in the NBC South, with the Panthers pulling into first place with a 5-2 win. Larry Hagen picked up 3 hits for the Panthers with Larry Corcoran getting his fifth win of the season. Sam Johnson has been pretty consistent between last year and this year for the Lions. Last season Johnson had a 2.79 FIP, while this year he has a 2.80 FIP. His ERA last year was 1.65, while this year it's 1.64. The big difference was last year Johnson was 5-6, but this year he improved to 5-1 on the year with a 4-1 win over the Vikings. The Chargers pulled off a shocking comeback against the Ravens and Jim Britt with 4 runs in the ninth inning. Dave Sherman hit the big 3 run double in the ninth inning for the Chargers. I'm OK with all of the teams becoming their NFL counterparts. What I can never accept is a New Orleans Saints' loss to the Falcons, Panthers, or Bucs, and, on a lower scale, the 49ers, Cowboys, Rams, or Vikings.

It looks like the Saints and Panthers are going to battle it out all year. The Saints shouldn't have trouble with the Falcons or Bucs this year, but will have what looks like an important Week 16 match in Carolina.

1883 Week 8
Weekly Recap Scott Young pitched a three hitter and struck out five as the Cardinals beat the Seahawks 6-3 to remain unbeaten. Lew Brown, Keith Schunemann, and Johnny Meyer each picked up two hits for Arizona. While the Cardinals remain unbeaten, the Bills had their first loss of the season as the Ravens scored 5 runs in the eighth to break a 9-9 tie in a 14-9 win. While both the Bills and Ravens lead their division, the two teams combined for 24 errors in a very sloppy game. Lou Sylvester came off the bench for a pinch hit triple with the bases loaded for the Ravens. Sam Johnson pitched a complete game shutout as the Lions improved to 6-1 on the season with a 4-0 win over the Dolphins. Johnson also tied for the team lead with 2 hits and 1 RBI. The Lions now lead the NL North by 3 games and will host the first place Giants next week in Detroit. The Giants faced off against another first place team this week, but fell 10-6 to the red hot Panthers. Larry Corcoran and Pete Browning each drove in 2 runs this week with Corcoran allowing just 1 earned run. Zack Harris was named the AL Player of the Week after holding the Eagles to just 4 hits in the Chiefs 4-1 win. Harris, Nate West, and Nate Bailey each picked up two hits for the Chiefs. |

1883 Week 9
Weekly Recap Jack Gleason is hitless in 10 at-bats this year for the Cardinals, but the 28 year old third baseman reached on an error in the tenth inning and came home to score the winning run on a passed ball to preserve the Cardinals' undefeated season with a 7-6 ten inning win over the Cardinals. The Cardinals now have a 4 game lead over the Seahawks in the NBC West. Jack Manning added a three run single for the Cardinals, with Scott Young picking up his 6th win of the year. The Bills dropped their second straight game as they lost to the Jaguars 4-1 this week, and have gone from undefeated to tied for first place as the Patriots improved to 6-2 with a 10-2 win over the Dolphins to move them into a first place tie in the ABC East with the Bills. The Saints kept pace with the Panthers in the NBC South as both teams won this week. The Panthers beat the Eagles 9-4 while the Saints defeated the Bucs 7-2. Ed Kennedy and Mike Mansell each drove in 2 runs for the Saints, with Aaron Jackson improving to 5-1 on the season. Sam Johnson of the Lions added another Player of the Week Award with a 10 inning victory over the Giants. Johnson allowed 4 runs, but just 1 of those runs was earned while striking out 2 and walking 1. The Lions improved to 7-1 on the season with the 5-4 win over the Giants. Dave Cartwright won the Player of the Week in the American Baseball Conference after his 5 hitter against the Bills. The trade deadline is just one day away, and we've already seen a flurry of activity. 26 year old second baseman Jimmy Knowles was sent by the Titans to the Seahawks in exchange for 40 year old Milt Foss and minor league starting pitcher Jimmy McGloin. Knowles is hitting .417 this season with 2 RBI. Foss is now pitching in relief, but has a 93-79 record for his career with a 3.14 ERA and is 2 wins behind Dan Anderson for most career wins. Another veteran pitcher, George Zettlein, was involved in a trade, going to Arizona along with minor league starting pitcher Tom Sullivan in exchange for 35 year old left fielder Christian Wadell. The 49'ers have sent 35 year old second baseman Nick Pierce to the Vikings in exchange for 28 year old right fielder Matthew Taylor and 22 year old starting pitcher Mike Stark. The Bengals shipped off 26 year old left fielder Bill Phillips (.313 AVG, 1 RBI, 7 R) to the Patriots in exchange for 26 year old left fielder Ernie Burch (2-3, 3 RBI). The Vikings also acquired 27 year old right fielder Rusty Messer in exchange for 40 year old reliever Vince Whiteside. |

Weekly Recap With a 6-4 win over the Bengals the Cardinals improved to 9-0 for the year. The Cardinals jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the first three innings with six separate hitters driving in a run and held off the Bengals seventh inning rally to win. Scott Young won his seventh game of the year while striking out 5 Bengals. The Lions remained just one game back for the best record in the NBC with a 4-1 11 inning win over the Bears. The Lions took advantage of four 11th inning errors by the Bears to score 3 runs and win the game. Sam Johnson pitched the complete game to improve to 8-1 on the season, allowing 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking just 1 batter. Ned Williamson picked up 3 hits and drove in 2 runs as the Panthers won a 10-6 shootout over the Buccaneers to also move to 8-1 on the year and open up a two game lead over the Saints, who fell 5-4 to the Jaguars. Jumbo Davis drove in 2 runs for the Jaguars who won their 5th game of the year and are tied with the Texans for the ABC South lead. 1883 Week 11
Weekly Recap Once again let's start with the Cardinals who scored 5 runs in the bottom of the eighth to come back and win 7-5 against the Seahawks and to improve to 10-0 on the season. Henry Larkin, Jeremy Byers, and John Irwin each had 3 hits for the Cardinals. Looking ahead at their remaining opponents in their undefeated quest - Week 12 - @ 49'ers (5-5) Week 13 - @ Packers (5-5) Week 14 - @ Rams (3-7) Week 15 - vs. Panthers (8-2) Week 16 - vs. Lions (8-2) Week 17 - @ Ravens (7-3) Things will definitely get difficult for them starting in week 15 as they close out the year against three tough opponents. Aaron Jackson of the Saints pitched a complete game one hitter to win his 6th game of the year as the Saints beat the Vikings 3-0 and now trail the Panthers by just a game in the NL South after the Panthers fell to the Colts 8-4. Jackson added a hit and scored a run, while Joseph Knight picked up 3 hits for the Saints in 3 at-bats to raise his average to .450 on the year. Jim Britt picked up the win as the Ravens beat their division rivals, the Steelers, 9-2. Deacon White came off the bench to deliver a pinch hit bases clearing double, driving in 3 in the Ravens win. Buck Ewing of the Titans was named ABC Batter of the Month after hitting .571 with 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. In the NBC that honor went to Johnny Meyer of the Cardinals after he hit .667 for the month with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. On the mound Jaimie Biernat of the Patriots went 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings to win ABC Pitcher of the Month. Sam Johnson of the Lions was 4-0 with a 0.69 ERA to earn the NBC Pitcher of the Month. |

Awesome concept you got going here. I'm hoping for the giants to continue their strong season (by their standards). Seemed like they have a pretty brutal time since the inception of this league

Thank you! Yes, the Giants have definitely had a pretty rough history. They've really just had two winning seasons in 1872 and 1873, and have a 93-120 overall record since the beginning. They've had some pretty decent hitting over the years, but this is the first time they've had a good young pitcher in Al Atkinson. They definitely do look like the team to beat in the East this year though.

1883 Week 12
Weekly Recap 39 year old Scott Young improved to 9-0 on the year for the Cardinals and lowered his ERA to 1.74 with a complete game, allowing 7 hits, and 3 unearned runs as the Cardinals remained unbeaten twelve weeks into the season and improved to 11-0 with a 4-3 win over the 49'ers. Keith Schunemann and Mike Smith led the Cardinals with two hits apiece. Up next for the Cardinals is another road game, this time in Green Bay as they take on the 5-6 Packers. Josh Karic of the Raiders was named ABC Player of the Week with 9 innings of 8 hit ball, allowing just 2 unearned runs as the Raiders knocked off the NBC East leading New York Giants 3-2. Karic added a double for the Raiders, who are now tied with the Broncos for the ABC West lead. Len Stockwell had three hits for the Raiders and scored the go ahead run in the seventh. (As a side note, with the mustache I think Karic just looks like a natural Raider.) Jack Lynch of the Seahawks was named NCS Player of the Week as the 'Hawks beat the Ravens 2-1. Lynch allowed 8 hits and one unearned run and improved to 5-6 on the year. Surprisingly Seattle at 5-6 is tied for the final wild card spot in the NBC with the Redskins, Packers, and 49'ers. With a 4-2 win over the Buccaneers the Texans remain tied with the Colts for the ABC South lead with a 6-3 record. The Texans and Colts have a big week 16 rematch scheduled, where the Colts will try and exact revenge from their 7-6 Week 10 loss to the Texans. |

Great series: I'd love the idea of exploring it more fully. I really like the one starter system.
Is there any chance you could hook me up with the schedules, logos and minor league system you use: I like writing stories about pitcher prospects and the intensity of this universe would be great for that story. |

I tried using reserve rosters instead of a minor league system, and now I'm trying one AAA level league only and the settings mirror the professional league. If you have any questions let me know. |
