Walkers news: July 1 -- St. Louis 8, Kansas City 3
Record: 47-36, 1st/(Tied/w. Cedar Rapids), 4 GA Springfield
Josh McDonald took a shutout into the eighth inning, and St. Louis scored eight times before Kansas City ever got on the board as the River Walkers won 8-3 at Kauffman Stadium. The win gave St. Louis wins in the first and third games of the three-game series. McDonald (6-7) allowed just five hits over the first seven innings before giving up three straight in the eighth. The third hit, a double by Ramon Puente, scored two runs and led to McDonald's exit. For the game, McDonald allowed three runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter. The Walkers jumped in front with a pair of runs in the fourth off Monarchs starting pitcher Jose Buenrostro. Nick Shaw singled with one out and scored on a Manuel Coke double. Dan Hillard made it back-to-back double, his scoring Coke to make it 2-0. St. Louis busted the game wide open with a six-run eighth. McDonald actually drove in the first two runs with a double off Josh Bankes. Miguel Peralta then replaced Bankes only to give up a RBI single to Bob Saavedra, and later a three-run homer to Jose Segura. Zachary Stella got the final two outs of the eighth for St. Louis, also allowing the Monarchs' third run on a sacrifice fly. Scott Rissler set the side down in order in the ninth. The return of Walkers catcher Jackson Miller lasted just five days, as he injured his back while running the bases. He had just come off a long stint on the injured list with a sprained knee which had kept him out five weeks. His primary backup, Zach Wenman, also is on the injured list meaning the Walkers will have to look to AAA Memphis to find a backup. |

Walkers news: July 2 -- Miller back to injured list; Winchester called up from AAA
Jackson Miller's return from the injured list lasted just five games, as the St. Louis River Walkers have placed him back on the 10-day injured list after he injured his back in an 8-3 win over Kansas City on July 1.
Miller, 33, who missed five weeks earlier in the season with a thigh injury, has batted .295 with two homers and 16 RBIs for St. Louis this season. Getting the callup from AAA Memphis, is 26-year-old Mike Winchester who will be playing in the majors for the first time. For the Redbirds this season, Winchester has batted .310 with five homers and 23 RBIs in 40 games. |

Walkers news: July 2 -- St. Louis 4, Des Moines 1
Record: 48-36, 1st/(Tied/w. Cedar Rapids), 4 GA Springfield
Shane Drogo allowed one run over seven innings and Bob Saavedra had his second consecutive four-hit game, as St. Louis downed Des Moines 4-1 at Busch Stadium (2006). Drogo (5-5) allowed just the one run -- a Jared Poland homer in the top of the fifth which made it 2-1 -- on three hits in his seven innings. He struck out five and walked just one. Nick Ruffalo pitched a scoreless eighth. Nick Strother did the same in the ninth for his 14th save. Saavedra, who had gone 4 for 5 in an 8-3 win at Kansas City the day before, duplicated that effort. This time, he opened his day with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the first inning off Harvesters starting pitcher Keith Talley. His other three hits were all singles, including one in the bottom of the eighth off Mark Polzin which drove in St. Louis' final run. The Walkers scored twice in that eighth, Chris Duncan plating the first run with a double. St. Louis went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Manuel Coke led off with a single off Talley. He scored on an Jose Ramirez double. |

Walkers news: July 3 -- St. Louis 8, Des Moines 5
Record: 49-36, 1st, 1 GA Cedar Rapids
Trailing 2-0, St. Louis busted loose for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, and the River Walkers went on to defeat Des Moines 8-5 at Busch Stadium (2006). A two-out, two-run double by the Harvesters Franklin Flores off St. Louis starting pitcher Jesse McNaboe had staked Des Moines to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The Walkers, however, answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Shaw led off the inning with a homer run off Harvesters starting pitcher Bill Van Gieson. After Manuel Coke followed with a single, Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer and all of a sudden the Walkers led 3-1. They weren't through. Manny Martinez followed the Ramirez homer with a single and Aaron Nixon drew a walk. A bunt by McNaboe put runners at second and third. Bob Saavedra drove one of them home with a single. Daniel Becerra sent Nixon across the plate with a single, as St. Louis went ahead 5-2. The Walkers would add single runs in the third (Coke led off with a double off Lawence Caulfield and later was driven in by Martinez), fourth (Saavedra, who had reached on a fielder's choice scored on a Shaw single) and fifth (Ramirez led off with a single off Caulfield and scored on a Saavedra single off Ben Hughes) to keep the Harvesters at bay. McNaboe (9-2) wasn't at his best on the mound but still earned his ninth win. He allowed four runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out five but walked four. Juan Munoz pitched a scoreless seventh. Scott Rissler handled the eighth and pitched into the ninth before allowing a run. Angel Tiburcio took over and put an end to the game. |

Walkers news: July 4 -- St. Louis 5, Des Moines 2
Record: 50-36, 1st, 1 GA Cedar Rapids
Tied 2-2, St. Louis scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the way to a 5-2 win over Des Moines and a sweep of their three-game series at Busch Stadium (2006). The Harvesters had tied it at 2-2 in the top of the sixth against River Walkers starting pitcher Edward Kunselman. Joe Allen led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Jared Poland single. Nick Shaw got things moving for St. Louis in the bottom of the sixth, with a lead-off single off Des Moines starting pitcher Hugh Fisher. A wild pitch moved Shaw to second, and he advanced to third on a fly ball hit by Manuel Coke. Manny Martinez was then given an intentional walk. Jose Ramirez made them pay with a triple over the head of Allen in center field. Ramirez then scored on a single by Chris Duncan. Kunselman lasted 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked two. Lefty Greg Sones came in to close out the sixth and keep it tied 2-2. Sones (4-0) would get the win. Juan Munoz got the first two outs of the seventh, before giving way to Nick Ruffalo. Ruffalo finished the seventh and worked a scoreless eighth. Nick Strother set the Harvesters down in order in the ninth for his 15th save. |

Walkers news: July 5 -- Columbus 2, St. Louis 1
Record: 50-37, 1st, 0.5 GA Cedar Rapids
Columbus jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, and that was enough as the Golden Bears defeated St. Louis 2-1 at Busch Stadium (2006). Kevin Kendall got things moving for the Bears, when he drew a lead-off walk from River Walkers starting pitcher Jim Martin. After a fly out by Javy Gutierrez, Kendall moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored when Chris Hery singled. That single would eventually become three in a row. Adrian Penucci followed with another single, moving Hery to second. Felipe Castillo made it 2-0 with a single up the middle. Playing his first major league game, Walkers catcher Mike Winchester would drive in his team's lone run with a double off Bears starting pitcher Drew Dillard in the bottom of the fifth. Dillard was impressive, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out five and walking one, but pitched just 4.2 innings. Bob Romero earned the win for finishing the fifth inning and working a scoreless sixth. After that, it was a scoreless inning apiece from Jim Kendall, Jason Johnson and Nate Finck to seal the win. Finck earned his sixth save. |
