Phillies to colorize
I'm sorry I didn't know that this thread was here. Here's the ones that I put in the photo site if you don't mind. Please colorize them for me. Could you email me some detailed instructions of how you do it so maybe I could try to help you out?
Montanez Cox Bannister Cash Diorio Metzger (Astros) Angel Hermoso (74 Indians) Crosby (71 & 73 Crosby) Thanks for your efforts! BRobby05 |

The Balance of the pics
Here's the balance of the pics. Thanks a million! I almost forgot...could you do 2 of Willie Montanez...the original and one with his mustache removed? Also, could you improve the Metzger photo with the grain, etc., I tried and didn't get anywhere. BTW, what software do you use...I use Paint Shop Pro 11.

Here is the 73 Ed Crosby. I'm stuck and probably my pic really stinks.

Ed Crosby 1970 Alt Uni Reds
Here's a slightly different version which may be a little easier to colorize.

Colorizing Crosby
The key to a good colorized image is the original image. My limited skills with colorization have often led to dead ends, i.e. find another black and white and start over. I took your posted Ed Crosby and got pretty much the same result you did. Our great friend here at the forum, TNFOTO was kind enough to post a second Crosby image. I downloaded his slightly darker image and colorized the face, then cut and pasted the face into your image. I don't think this will win any awards, but it's a pretty serviceable pic. Fortunately, the small size of the finished images most of us require to be used in-game means that the picture doesn't have to be perfect.

1974 Willie Montanez
Hi here's my attempt at the 1974 Willie Montanez. How do I do the jersey and pinstripes? I'm enjoying this...I just need some questions answered.
Thanks, BRobby05 |

Larry Cox
Hi Krantzbucks,
Here's my attempt at the whole thing with Larry Cox. What do you think? Is it postable? Please give any recommendations. Thanks, BRobby05 |

Nice job on these guys! Looks like you answered your own question about the Philly pinstripes, but all I do is blow up the image until the stripes are nice and big, trace around them, pick a good color and there you are. As to your question about the Cox pic, good enough to post? You bet!
I have made a try at removing Willie Montanez' trademark 'stache as you had requested. Let me know what you think. Color me embarrassed! I didn't even notice the pinstripes when I finished. By the way, the only way I could figure out to do this moustache-ectomy was with a bit of cut and paste from around the edges of the moustache and then I blew it up so large I could barely tell it was a person anymore. A little pixel by pixel blending around the edges to make it look slightly more natural. Last edited by krantzbucks; 06-10-2012 at 05:17 PM. Reason: added Montanez sans 'stache, then recolored the pinstripes. |

71 Montanez
Thanks for your efforts. Actually, I should've fixed the pinstripes first instead.

Finished Products
It's me again. Here are the finished products. I noticed that your 71 is a different shade than my 74. Is mine too dark? Would they be ready to post?

Dave Rader 1971
Funny you should request Dave Rader again, Cheech. I just was finishing him after hearing back from you today. So here he is in all his Red Sox glory.

max Butcher 1936
Max Butcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I have included one image with a red 'P' and one with a white 'P'. Looks like during Butcher's term with the team, the Pirates used a red Pirates P from 39-41 then a white Pirates P from 42-45.

How did you the stands on Dave Rader? That's what I was talking about on the 1971 Ed Crosby enclosed.
Thanks, BRobby05 |

Ed Crosby 1971
Quote:
Alternatively you can try to color individual areas. This technique is time consuming but with the right image can be very impressive. Once again, your work will be entirely dependent on your source image. I have taken the Ed Crosby image and made my best effort at colorizing the background. I did the seats in blue, and darkened the concrete supports and facades. The other items are too indistinct in the photo to really be sure what they are (A person? A concession stand? A sign??) This effort took me a lot of time and in the final assessment, I think the blue monochrome image is better. The last image is the Ed Crosby photo cut and pasted on top of a color photo of Busch Stadium. To do this, make sure the destination image (the stadium photo) is large enough to contain your cut-out player image. With the image I did, I had to increase the size of the stadium photo in another program (I made it the same height as the Crosby pic). I then save the image and cropped it so the sides of the Crosby image were the sides of the blended image. This turned out pretty well in this case, but sometimes a colorized image looks bad when paired with an actually color photo. Again, use your artist's eye. In the final analysis, I prefer the Crosby superimposed onto the color photo. Ordinarily I would have only done the first one. It is the easiest and looks pretty good. Sometimes colorizing requires you to make a value judgment. It took me a bit longer to do the others (especially the middle two) so sometimes putting more time and work into your colorization is not necessarily the best thing. Make a call on what you will be using your photo for and take it from there. |

Thanks a lot!!!
Thanks a lot for your efforts...they look great. My favorite is the next to the last one. They're ALL good though. I'm gonna try the Angel Hermosas myself. I'll probably ask for help. Could you cut & paste your ideas about Crosby in an email so I can save it?
Thanks again, BRobby05 |
