You're right - Baseball Reference has a bug or ambiguous data. One section the list 66m for the Mets, the other 42m. I don't know if the 42m is a bug or represents the actual paid amount.

Wikipedia says the Mets and Bay terminated the contract a year early (voiding the 2013 season of the deal), but has nothing on what that meant financially.

I remember that $66M millstone well, because that was THE bad contract on the books when I really got into baseball.

Now it's $341M to Lindor...

It seems very Wilponny, so I assume that no honest accountant would ever be able to tell us what happened.

could be guarantee vs contract possible value

The Yankees get pointed at for some bad contracts BUT -- many were signed by other teams then traded ......

Still can not believe Bobby Bonilla --- He gets almost 1.2 million dollars a season till 2035 ---- 14 more years

Braves have actually been paying Bruce Sutter since 1991. They'll stop in '22 or '23. About 44 million over that time, and it wasn't even a buyout, it was just part of his deal to pay him for 35+ years.

And he pitched 150 innings for the Braves to a -0.3 WAR.

Next year in OOTP will be kind of grim, he'll be totally untradeable as will McCann and his $10M per year. Plus $18M to Conforto, plus I saw an arb estimate somewhere of $10M for Quién Punta al Cielo. And Carrasco, and Jake if he's still on the shelf, and...

To the general tune of everything being ****, "Perpetual" Pedro Feliciano died (probably) of his genetic heart condition on the 8th.

From Wikipedia.

Quote:
Feliciano was diagnosed with left ventricular noncompaction,[25] a rare genetic heart condition, in 2013.[14] He died on November 8, 2021, at his home in Puerto Rico.[25] He was 45 years old.[14][26]

Yes, that was a third Mets-related headline that I overlooked. A one-year, $21 million contract, $2.6 million more than the Mets offered, for a guy recovering from TJ surgery. Looks like he is grabbing as much money as he can, just in case. If he rebounds in 2022, then he will get an even better, and longer, deal.

My heart totally wants the Metsies to get back Matzie.

At the very same time, my baseball brain screams "NOOOOOOOOO. DON'T DO IT!!"

As a Cardinals fan, I like the Matz signing. A control pitcher with the best defensive infield in MLB appeals to me.

He will fit in nicely with Scherzer, Wainwright, Flaherty, and Dakota Hudson.

IF Scherzer signs with the Cards, can you think of a better starting staff in MLB?

"Control pitcher" was never a term I associated with him. He can be infuriating with constant 3-1 counts.

Or maybe the Blue Jays fixed him, what do I know?

Oh good, the Mets sign over-the-hill 30+ year-olds again.

Quote:
NEW YORK -- No longer content to sit out baseball’s early offseason proceedings, the Mets struck three times in emphatic fashion on Friday evening, agreeing to terms with outfielders Starling Marte and Mark Canha as well as infielder Eduardo Escobar, according to sources.

According to a source, the Mets agreed to a four-year, $78 million contract with Marte late in the night, tacking him onto a banner evening that already included two-year handshakes with Canha for $26.5 million (with a third-year option), and Escobar for $20 million. All three deals are pending physicals. The team has not acknowledged them because they are not yet official.
Well, perhaps not over-the-hill, but sub-par defenders for sure. And I take adding two outfielders means we're no longer trying to bring back Conforto?

Not thrilled about the Canha signing especially. He always struck me as a first baseman and little else. And we already have a first baseman.

Speaking of first baseman, when you posted above, I thought they'd traded Pete for something. That's where the baseball gods can still get me, by robbing me of Pete!
