MBL news: Oct. 2 -- Twin Cities captures NL North Division title

The Twin Cities Snow Cats clinched the National League North Division title with a 3-2 win over Des Moines at Green Canyon Park.
The Snow Cats (100-60) have boasted the best record in the Midwest Baseball League through most of the season and with the win sewed up home-field advantage throughout the NL championship series and World Series.
They lead second-place Rockford by three with two games left in the regular season.
Twin Cities starting pitcher Travis Mayr (15-5) collected his 15th win of the season by pitching 5.1 scoreless innings.
The Cats owned a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth when the Harvesters tallied twice but could not get it tied.
The postseason berth is the seventh for Twin Cities, dating back to the foundation of the MBL in 2018.
It last made the playoffs in 2035.
The Cats only World Series win came in 2031.
Twin Cities came out on the losing end of the World Series in 2034 against Grand Rapids.

Walkers news: Oct. 3 -- Peoria 7, St. Louis 6

Record: 89-71, 1st, 12 GA Quad City; NL South Division champions
Peoria scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to wipe out what had been a 6-0 deficit, as the Rivermen rallied to defeat St. Louis 7-6 at Globe Life Field.
Powered by a three-run homer by Mark Waterson and a two-run shot by Manuel Coke the River Walkers had built a 6-0 lead before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning.
It's pitcher, Josh McDonald, wasn't bad either taking a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh.
Tony Gamez broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single and scored when Wes Cohen followed with a two-run homer.
That spelled the end for McDonald.
Ane once again, the St. Louis bullpen which has struggled through the final two months of the season could not get the job done.
Ken Henry actually retired the first two hitters for the Rivermen in the bottom of the eighth.
But his fortunes turned when Ryan Palmer homered to make it 6-3.
Johnny Castognozzi followed with a single and Drew Bowser doubled to put runners on second and third.
Greg Sones replaced Henry, but nothing changed.
Tony Gamez singled to score two more runs.
Cohen, who spent a brief amount of time in St. Louis before being trade to Peoria, followed with his second homer of the game, this one a three-run shot, to put Peoria in front.
Cohen has 35 home runs for the season.
Four pitchers all logged two innings for the Rivermen -- starter Dan Motley, Lornezo Mascarro, Mike Fowler and Steve Fitzgerald -- before Mike Fagan pitched a perfect ninth.
Fitzgerald (1-0) earned his first win of the season.
Fagan collected his 24th save.
Fagan recorded one save while with St. Louis, but has notched 23 since his July 7 trade to Peoria.

MBL news: Oct. 3 -- Indianapolis clinches top spot in American League West

Brian Newell hit a two-run homer and Jared Thomas a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to wipe out a 3-2 deficit and help lift Indianapolis to a 6-3 win over Grand Rapids which allowed the Racers to clinch the American League West Division championship.
Indy (89-72) owns a two-game lead over Grand Rapids with one game left in the regular season.
The Racers will open the best-of-seven AL championship series at Cincinnati.
The River Sharks boast a record of 92-69.
The playoff berth is the fourth in the history of the Racers.
They have never won the World Series, but reached the final round in 2020 and 2032.
Both times they were defeated by Des Moines.

Walkers news: Oct. 4 -- Peoria 3, St. Louis 2

Record: 89-72,1st, 11 GA Quad City; NL South Division champions
Drew Bowser staked Peoria to a two-run lead with a home run off St. Louis starting pitcher Danny Burch in the bottom of the third inning, and the Rivermen rode that to a 3-2 win at Globe Life Park.
The win gave Peoria a sweep of the three-game series to complete the regular season.
St. Louis, however, may have to play a makeup game with Columbus although the game will mean nothing in the standings.
That contest is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 4.
Bowser's homer followed a one-out single by Johnny Castagnozzi.
Manuel Coke homered off Peoria starter Seth Sipple in the top of the sixth to make it 2-1.
Randy Underhill got that run back when he homered for the second time in the series, his homer of Maximilliano Minelli with one out in the bottom of the seventh made it 3-1.
St. Louis did score a run in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out single by Zach Wenman off Steve Fitzgerald.
But with runners on first and second, Francisco Perez stepped in and got Bob Saavedra to fly out to end the game.
Sipple (5-8) allowed the one run on five hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Mike Fowler finished the sixth for Peoria.
After that, it was a pair of scoreless innings for Alex Rios and Mike Gil.
Fitzgerald (0.2 IP) and Perez (0.1) combined to hold off the Walkers in the ninth.

Walkers news: Oct. 5 -- St. Louis 2, Columbus 1

Record: 90-72, 1st, 11 GA Quad City; NL South Division champions
Although St. Louis didn't want to play this game, it did allow them to end the season on a win as rookie Matt Wilson pitched six strong innings and the River Walkers downed Columbus 2-1 in their regular-season finale at Busch Stadium (2006).
The game was a makeup of a rain out earlier in the season. It made no difference in the standings, but with the Walkers having lost three straight at Peoria it was probably nice to go into the National League championship series against Twin Cities on a victory.
Wilson (2-2), who may end up in the St. Louis bullpen for the playoffs, worked six shut-out innings allowing five hits. He struck out four and walked two.
St. Louis had built a 2-0 lead by the time Wilson left the game.
Rookie Mark Waterson hit his 25th home run of the season, it came off Golden Bears starting pitcher Cesar Gamez, to lead off the bottom of the second.
The Walkers added their second run in the fifth.
Jackson Miller led off with a single off Gamez.
He scored on a double by Bob Saavedra.
After Wilson exited, St. Louis needed five relievers to cover the final three innings.
Nick Ruffalo's second-half struggles continued as he allowed a homer to Nolan Gorman in the seventh.
Scott Rissler finished off the seventh and got the first out of the eighth.
Armando Cintron got the second out of the eighth, but then had to leave the game with an undisclosed injury.
Ron Cox wrapped up the eighth with the Walkers still in front.
Bobby Westerman held Columbus scoreless in the ninth for his 27th save.

Walkers news: Oct. 8 -- Cintron to miss postseason with elbow injury

The St. Louis River Walkers have placed left-handed relief pitcher Armando Cintron on the 60-day disabled with a strained left elbow.
Cintron last pitched in the River Walkers 2-1 win over Columbus in their season finale against Columbus on Oct. 5.
The second half of the season was marred by injuries for Cintron, who got hurt four different times after July 9.
Up until that time Cintron had been among the team's best relievers.
For the season, the 34-year-old got into 48 games going 3-2 with eight saves and a 3.07 ERA.
Expecting the news, St. Louis had formulated its roster for the National League championship series without Cintron.
