When should I release players?

I'm trying to figure out when I should release players I don't want to retain in my minor league system, while incurring the least amount of organizational expense possible.

In other words, let's say it's Sept. 25th on the ML calendar. My AAA team's season is over, and the team didn't make the playoffs. So there's nothing going on with any of those guys until spring training starts up again.

There are 5 guys I know I'm not bringing back. One of them is on the 40-man ML roster but didn't get called up when rosters expanded (because yes, he really is THAT bad). The other 4 are on minor league contracts.

When is the deadline I must release them by before they get their contracts auto-renewed for next year?

Release them between the end of the season and arb.
