Player Import to Historical Game

I'd like to play the 1967 season but substitute the 2019 Washington Nationals for the 1967 Washington Senators -- not a simulation, but an actual game-by-game managed season. Is there any place that describes the steps to import players from a different season or is someone willing to explain it? The online manual is woefully inadequate about explaining such things, and any attempt I've made has resulted in either (1) a generic error message that provides no insights or (2) a popup that my player input was successful, though no players can be found.

Two months in quarantine and I still can't figure out how to export / import players. It should not take an advanced degree to accomplish such a basic function.

don't know what could be causing your issues. i used to import players all the time with the historical importer. only issue was once in a while i'd find i'd need to find a different ID (esp. for players like Cool Papa Bell and Andrew (Rube) Foster ... mostly Negro Leagues. (right now my game computer is nonfunctional and i am waiting for a new machine to be constructed sometime later this month) so i can't run a test to verify these still work ...)

i am assuming you are on the historical importer - the one on free agent page far right - drop down menu - import historical player(s)?

you need player ID from the game (the ones used in the game are located in a .csv file in the stats folder).... and the year of play you want him to enter the game. you need to say if you want him in the draft pool or FA pool .... i can't recall the other options off the top of my head.

Here's A sample from the file i used in my 1887 import ... (some say you don't need a space after the coma, but i've also read it's needed and it's worked whenever i used it. so, i always use it now.)

baldwma01, 1887
beatied01, 1887
beeched01, 1887
brownwi01, 1887
burkebi01, 1887

those would be imported as a text file, using 30-40 players at a time. i always made certain they went to draft pool, but you can also send them to free agency.
to do one player , you merely need

baldwma01, 1887

for an example.

to put them on a specific team, the text file would need to be something along these lines:

jeterde01, 1999,nyy
mantlmi01, 1957,nyy
gehrilo01, 1927,nyy


if the players don't show up on your teams after import - have you tried to search for them as Free Agents or in the draft pool? (Those in the draft pool will appear in a search, but the pool itself will not be visible until the draft reveal date you have specified in your game settings.) Just type their name in the search box at the top of the game and they should come up if import was successful. i know a couple i'd entered to FA instead of the draft pool were missing until i did a general search.

from an excellent post by micropterus58 - here is a way to import players to specific teams via text file, by simply adding another few characters to the ones already created by the above write-up:

"To import players create a txt file using Notepad. I suggest you create a file for each team and import one team at a time. Then verify that the team is populated correctly. It's very easy to make a mistake. For the Yankees expand on the following example.

jeterde01, 1999,nyy
mantlmi01, 1957,nyy
gehrilo01, 1927,nyy

The nyy follows the abbreviation used on the league & teams settings page. This is the destination team so you can assign players to any team you wish. Select the year you want. You may have to use multiple databases to import the mix of players."

I suggest you do one team at a time and verify the players imported correctly. Here's a sample for the Red Sox and Pawtucket (AAA).

yastrca01, 1967,bos
evansdw01, 1981,bos
willite01, 1946,bos
riceji01, 1978,paw
doerrbo01, 1944,bos
ortizda01, 2007,bos

just be certain you are using the team edit names that are actually in the game. to find those - go the league settings, league & teams, there you'll find a list of all the teams and their abbreviations.

i've not tried this in OOTP 21, but it worked well the one time i tested it in OOTP 20.

not much else i can add that i know or have tested without a functioning game computer. all the best.

I just wish the moderators would create a FAQ section since this is a VERY frequently asked question. Using the search function would also help newbies and veterans alike. This is frustrating for all involved and creates many duplicate posts adding to the frustration.

no it shouldn't and doesn't. i've had prior sims of 30+ years when every single player in the game i entered via the text file import method, so i know it works. What is essential is that the player ID, year, team are accurate and fit the parameters of the game. there is a .csv file in the stats folder that has the player iD that the game uses, for every player in the game. If they aren't in that file, or the minor league stat file, they ain't in the game and won't import.

It's the "then add historical team" part that is frustrating. It just kind of baffles me that one needs to manually build a text file with cryptic player reference names and go through an equally obscure import process. If you were programming a game that touts its ability to facilitate matchups across the eras, wouldn't you write a few lines of code to accomplish this without the manual data file construction requirement?
