Lost RFA, no compensation?

I had a 22 year old, 5 star D coming off his ELC who had played 3 years in the league with me. My finger slipped, and I hit "End Negotiations" instead of "Renew Contract" after checking his demand against my cap situation, and he wouldn't sign with me before July 1. In free agency, he was willing to talk with me again, but his contract demand had almost doubled and I wasn't going to be able to afford him anymore. I figured that since he was an RFA, I may as well just take the compensation, since his demand was now massive and into the 4 first round picks range. But, come July 2, he signed a 4X12 with the Flyers and I didn't even get news of an offer sheet coming my way. I checked my draft picks, and I don't have any of Philadelphia's in my possession. What happened, and why didn't I get the compensation I was entitled to?

Did you actually submit an offer before July 1st? Because if you didn't, you didn't qualify him and therefore he's no longer a RFA. He's now a UFA.
