Intrigued by the detailed dynasties
I was just wondering how some of you come up with some of the really elaborate and detailed fictional teams?? Like the Raccoons, Islandian, Newland and Braeland. Is this imagination just running wild? How is this all thought up??

No sophisticated thought process here, the franchises in my dynasty where whipped up in less than an hour, which is why some fairly relevant cities have no team.
But Sioux Falls has one. ![]() There were some things I liked the sound of (Cincinnati Cyclones), or had used in earlier leagues (Milwaukee Loggers, Sacramento Scorpions) in other games (PureSim anyone?), but some things were slapped together to fill up divisions. (Atlanta + Knights? Ah, who cares.) I wanted one thing (besides playing with a team named Raccoons): no MLB nicknames in the league. Say hello to the Indianapolis Indians. I'm a fail.

Many of the teams in my fictional Metro Leagues have nick names from teams that no longer exist. I got most of the team nicknames from a reference book called Pro Baseball Franchises From the Abbeville Athletics to the Zanesville Indians by Peter Filichia. Next, I matched the nick names with a fictional metropolitan city (some from books/comics others totally made up) of my choice. You'll notice that some of my fictional city names can be found on real maps but that is completely coincidental. Here are brief notes about the team names I chose...
Gotham Knickerbockers (City name: Batman comic / Nickname: Spin on vintage Knickerbockers of New York ball club, 1845-'59) Boardwalk Atlantics (City name: Inspired by street from Monopoly board game / Nickname: Spin on old time Brooklyn Atlantics ball club, 1881-'84) Hudson Spiders (City name: Inspired by New York's Hudson River / Nickname: Spin on old time Cleveland Spiders a team that played in the Federal League, 1889-'99) Capeside Cyclones (City/Nickname: Totally fictional) St. Cruze Solons (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on Sacramento Solons of the Old Pacific Coast League, 1936-'45) Sterling Tomcats (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on Thomasville Tomcats of the Georgia-Florida League, 1952) Braxton Bruins (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on Des Moines Bruins of the Western League, 1947-'57) Newport Patriarchs (City/Nickname: Totally fictional) Metropolis Blue Sox (City name: Superman comic / Nickname: Spin on fictional Blue Sox club from Duane Decker books from 1947-'64.) Delta Stars (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on the Negro Leagues Detroit Stars, 1920-'33) Parkland Perfectos (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on the old time St. Louis Perfectos ball club, 1899) Rivermount Summits (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on Akron Summits, Ohio-Michigan League, 1952) Roxford Excelsiors (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on oldtime Brooklyn Excelsiors ball club, 1876) Baytown Diamonds (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname; Spin on Roseville Diamonds, Far West League, 1948) Midway Comets (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname; Spin on Kenosha Comets of the All-American Girls Professional League, 1943-'51) Dunberry Dragons (City name: Totally fictional / Nickname: Spin on Lindale Dragons, Georgia-Alabama Association, 1928) Last edited by DreamTeams; 10-01-2015 at 08:49 PM. |

What I found, that I thought was pretty cool, was while I was tinkering with the Fictional Leagues, I hit the "Region" button and found you could make leagues from each and every state. So, I, being from Kansas City, Kansas, hit the state of Kansas. I saw a bunch of the surrounding places and cities around KCK, that I have been familiar with my whole life, appear in the league.
Same for Missouri (since I lived on the Kansas-Missouri line) and Arkansas (where I lived in northwest Arkansas for five years and currently live again)! That was a really cool addition! I am even MORE glad I have OOTP now! |
