Some hinky-as-heck stuff going on here, as Brandon Lowe gets the call even though he only retired last season. Checked the settings, it is at the default 5 years. Anyway, doesn't bother me here. Anthony Ruiz also joins the immortals. Sadly, our old mate Orv Mohler only garners 3.9% on his second ballot and is dropped.

1925 Top Players / Prospects

Just one to keep an eye out for this season and perhaps it's an omen for Red Sox Nation. Marcelo Mayer is currently playing his age-19 season at A-Ball Salem in Boston's system, and doing quite well. BNN like the look of him for this OFA season as well, expecting him to hit 277 with 16 HR. Which is a bit out of the blue considering his so-so ratings and 6-for-28 career at this level. Consider my interest piqued.

1925 Season Recap

The NL Central race comes down to a final day showdown between the Cubs and Bucs, with Chicago taking the game 6-1 and relegating Pittsburgh to the NL WC1 slot, where they are knocked out by the Marlins. The Mariners win 113 and barely raise a sweat en route to another title.

Awards

  • AL: Don Hurst (Orioles) [1]
  • NL: David Justice (Brewers) [2]
CYA
  • AL: Don Drysdale (Royals) [2]
  • NL: Moose Haas (Cubs) [1]
RoY
  • AL: Edgar Wesley (Rays)
  • NL: Marcelo Mayer (Pirates) unanimous
Reliever
  • AL: Benny Frey (Mariners) [1] unanimous
  • NL: Jim Moore (Brewers) [1]

Feats of Note
  • Cycle: Jim Rice, Bill White, Willie Upshaw, Glenallen Hill, Babe Herman, Frenchy Bordagaray, Lyle Overbay, Johnny Gill
  • No-Hitter: Hal Newhouser, Luis Tiant
  • Carl Crawford sets new OFA record by hitting in 34 straight games

Milestones
  • 600 HR: Daryl Strawberry
  • 3000 H: Jud Wilson, Dusty Baker, Freddie Freeman
  • 250 W: Burleigh Grimes
  • 300 SV: Tim Burke, Vibert Clarke

New Season Records
  • Rondel Hawley 83 G / 69 GS

Top 20s by WAR

More scarily uncanny prescience from the BNN mob as Marcelo Mayer crushes his rookie season, winning the RoY and locking down 7.1 bWAR, second only in the league to Don Hurst's 7.3. He also finishes third behind David Justice and Jim Rice in the NL MVP vote, even garnering 8 first-place nods. Heady company indeed!

After a bit of a lull in the second half of his twenties, Ben "Old Reliable" Taylor is enjoying a renaissance in his thirties, and his age-34 season is easily his best yet as he slashes 351/408/505 to win the NL batting title, leads the league with 42 doubles and racks up a career-high 5.6 bWAR.

1925 Retirees of Note

512 taters / 1316 ribeyes for Leon.

You'd have to think Biebs is a lock for C-Town.

Our very first Lucky Last Jacob Cook - still the only from this group to make it to the bigs - also hangs them up.

Sadly, because of the manual import required, a QS wouldn't work.

The spreadsheet I used is too big to add here, but am happy to share. If you want it, hit me up with your email address on a PM and I'll send it through.

Final OFA Timeline, 1926-2018

OK, so I have played this out to the end and here is a loose timeline of some interesting things that happened.
  • 1926: The Rockies lose again in WS but finally win it all the next season in a seven-gamer against the Yankees.
  • 1926: Chick Hafey goes 0-for-3 on final day to miss out on hitting 400.
  • 1931: The A’s make it all the way from WC2 to WS but still can’t get that elusive title, losing in six to the Giants in a Bay Series blockbuster that gives San Fran its first ever Championship.
  • 1931: Satchel Paige overtakes Jose Fernandez as all-time wins leader; he finishes up in 1932 with 326 to his name. Even though he does make the HoF on the first try, he only scrapes in with 75.3% of the vote. Tough crowd!
  • 1933: Two first-timers in the WS and the Diamondbacks beat the Angels in an amazing seven-gamer, scoring 4 in the top 9th of the decider to pinch it.
  • 1935: Julio Franco passes Bill Terry as all-time hits leader; he finishes up in 1940 with 4403.
  • 1937: An all-LA WS and the Halos finally win it all.
  • 1938: Moose Mussina becomes just the third 300-game winner. He closes out his career with 306.
  • 1939: Every playoff series goes the distance until the Royals sweep the Marlins in the WS.
  • 1945: Barry Bonds sets a new season mark with 70 HR, eclipsing Maurice Colona’s 66 way back in ’05. He also extends his own WAR mark from a few seasons prior with 11.1.
  • 1946: Matt Carlisle sets a new OFA record with 42 triples.
  • 1948: Bonds surpasses Harmon Killebrew atop the all-time HR leaderboard. He finishes up in 1954 with 941.
  • 1948: Jim Thome becomes the all-time RBI leader, passing Stan Musial. He finishes the following year with 2369, as well as 768 HR. Barry Bonds overtakes him in 1951, and ends up with 2504.
  • 1949: Miami wins its first Championship, leaving nine teams winless.
  • 1949: Yordan Alvarez wins the NL Batting Triple Crown in his rookie season. He wins another one in 1956.
  • 1952: In a World Series between two clubs looking for their first Championship, the Orioles come back from 3-2 down to beat the Reds in seven. It is Cincy’s 20th playoff appearance without winning it all; only the Pirates with 22 have more. The O’s win it all again in ’54, the Reds finally get their win in ’56.
  • 1955: Tom Seaver becomes just the 4th 300-game winner. His career ends in 1962 with him on 322, just 4 short of Satchel’s all-time record.
  • 1960: The Cubs win their first ever Championship. This leaves only the Blue Jays, A’s, Cardinals, Pirates, Phillies and Astros winless.
  • 1960: In perhaps the greatest Draft Pool of all, Joe DiMaggio is taken first overall, with Eddie Collins (3rd), Henry Aaron (4th), Vladimir Guerrero (6th) and Rafael Devers (7th) all in the Top Ten, and both Meusel brothers just outside it. Collins and DiMaggio both get retired after one season. Given the other players this has happened to previously, I thought it must have been something to do with pre-minors MLB players being imported via their MiLB ID. Then I checked, and these guys were all imported via their BBRef ID, so I am stumped as to why this might be happening. From 1970 until 19, I unchecked RETIRE ACCORDING TO HISTORY to see what effect that had. Immediately, players started retiring as per their actual IRL age-season and the older guys get to play out their full careers. Will have to raise this with the Devs.
  • 1962: Gaylord Perry makes it to 300 wins and closes out his career in 1966 with 303 all told.
  • 1965: The Cards rally from 3-2 down to earn their first title in a tense seven-gamer over the Royals. And then there were five.
  • 1966: After finishing the previous season tied with Barry Bonds at 941 on the all-time HR list, Mark McGwire goes ohfer his final 3 AB in the bigs, gets sent down and never returns, retiring in 1968.
  • 1968: The Pirates make the WS for the first time ever, only to be swept by Cleveland.
  • 1970/73: Two versions of Wander Franco end up playing at the same time, his MiLB and MLB versions. Wander S. (MiLB) imports with almost double the ratings Wander (MLB) does. Wander S. is drafted 25th overall in 1970 but doesn’t sign, putting them both in the 1973 Draft, where Wander S. goes 16th and Wander 462nd. Wander S. plays a few seasons in the Show without ever achieving much. Wander never gets there.
  • 1971: The Red Sox win their second title overall and first since 1906.
  • 1971: Bert Blyleven makes it to 300 career wins. He retires in 1973 with 320.
  • 1971: Eddie Tyler (who?) sets a new season record with 62 doubles.
  • 1972: The Padres win just their second title and first since 1914.
  • 1975: The Pirates win their first Championship, then win again in ‘77. And then there were four.
  • 1985: Rickey Henderson passes Willie Wilson as the all-time SB leader. His career ends in 1993 with him having swiped 1013.
  • 1985: Michael Jordan in the Draft. No cup of coffee for him.
  • 1986: The Astros win their first Championship. And then there were three.
  • 1991: As the OFA hits perhaps its most competitive phase with a host of superstars playing, Ted Williams bursts onto the scene with an 11 WAR rookie campaign that leads his Pirates to a title, with Ted the WS MVP. In fact he wins every award he is eligible for except a Gold Glove.
  • 1992: The Twins win just their second Championship and first since 1911.
  • 1999: Manny Ramirez sets a new season record with 176 RBI.
  • 2004: Vladimir Guerrero jr becomes the all-time HR leader, passing Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. He takes over the top RBI spot the following year, belting his 1000th career homer on the final day of the regular season, and finishes his career in 2007 with 1051 HR and 2736 RBI.
  • 2008: Rogers Hornsby’s 11.9 bWAR is a new single-season record.
  • 2011: Rod Carew misses out by 3 bips on becoming just the third OFA player with a 400 season.
  • 2013: Two of the three teams yet to win it all, Oakland and Toronto, meet in the ALCS. The Jays win it in seven to face the Diamondbacks in the WS, but lose it in five. The two get a rematch the following year and this time the Jays finally get their win. And then there were two.
  • 2014: The very next year, one of those two – the Phillies – break their drought as well, leaving just the poor old A’s without a Championship.
  • 2017: The Blue Jays win a record-tying 121 games, with division mates the Yankees winning 116. The two meet in the DCS, with the Jays sweeping 3-0. They once again dash the A’s hopes in another seven-game ALCS but lose in the WS to the Pirates.
  • 2018: Final season. Sadly, the A’s go winless. As my team, I can say that this is too similar to IRL for my liking.

119 players made the HoF, which was the toughest bunch of voters I've ever seen. Loved relievers, though.

There were plenty of interesting players who popped, but I won't bother putting them in.

OFA Single-Season Leaders

Some of the dreaded cameos have stuffed up the leaderboards, so the notes at the end highlight the actual leaders as needed.

R: Devon White (144, 2018)
SB: Joseph Macke (101, 1902)

W: Joe Horlen (28, 1919)
L: Norohiro Hamada (42, 2018) things had gone a bit crazy by then, ergo it being the final season...
SHO: Joe Horlen (9, 1919)
K: Randy Johnson (335, 1919)
WAR: Jose Fernandez (12.44, 1917)
