1941 Eastern League Pennant Series
Stratford Barons (98-56) vs. Braeland City Monarchs (96-58) Season Matchup: 11-4 in favour of Braeland City Stratford: Runs scored – 817 (2nd in EL); runs allowed – 623 (2nd in EL). Braeland City: Runs scored – 759 (6th in EL); runs allowed – 589 (1st in EL). The battle for the 1941 Eastern League Pennant opened on April 1 at Bosworth Field in Stratford under partly cloudy skies with over 26,000 in attendance. The Stratford Barons, making their first appearance in the playoffs, hosted the defending Eastern League champions, the Braeland City Monarchs. The Monarchs won 96 games last season as well, but had to settle for the wild card this time as they were unable to hold off a surging Barons team. Nevertheless, the Monarchs enjoyed good success against the Barons, taking 11 of 15 regular season games. Would Braeland City’s mastery over Stratford and their playoff experience give them an advantage in the series? Or would injuries to key offensive players, such as C Kane Broom and 2B Adam Ashley, prove too much to overcome? There was only one way to find out. Play ball! -------- Game 1 Braeland City 5 – Stratford 2 ![]() The Monarchs drew first blood in the top of the 3rd inning. SP Lenny Freke reached base on an error (E6) with one out and scored from second base when CF Jay Atwood singled. That opened up the scoring 1-0 for Braeland City. Stratford responded in the bottom half. 2B Rhett Curnow doubled with one out and tied the game when SS Jake Walker singled. But Braeland City would take the lead for good in the 6th. 3B Louie Hetherington led off with a double. After 2B Trevor Bolen was intentionally walked, both baserunners advanced on a wild pitch by SP Ryan Borden. LF Scott Kessler then followed with a one-out double, scoring both Hetherington and Bolen. Braeland City now led 3-1. Braeland City made it 5-1 in the 7th. Lenny Freke led off with a double and reached third when Jay Atwood singled. After SS Finlay Ridd was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out, RP Larry Parrish came in to relieve SP Ryan Borden. But a single by Louie Hetherington and a walk to Trevor Bolen brought in to more runs. Stratford would get one run back in the bottom of the 8th. Rhett Curnow singled with one out and scored on LF Bart Wallwin’s double. Stratford would try to get back into the game in the bottom of the 9th. Down to their last out, 1B Omar Fontanoza singled. After RF Don Adkins followed him with a double, Fontanoza tried to score, but was cut down at home to end the game. Player of the Game: Monarchs’ SP Lenny Freke went the distance, scattering 8 H with 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K (1-0, 2.00 ERA). SP Ryan Borden took the loss, going 6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K (0-1, 6.00 ERA). -------- Game 2 Braeland City 0 – Stratford 4 ![]() Braeland City’s SP Jin-man Kim kept Stratford hitless through the first four innings. But C Gavin Hurley broke through in the bottom of the 5th inning when he led off with a solo home run, giving Stratford the lead. The Barons added 3 more runs in the 7th. After Gavin Hurley and CF Kade Limeburner reached base on a single and a walk respectively, RF Don Adkins followed with a 3-run home run to left field. SP Joel Fearn continued to frustrate the Monarchs the rest of the way, allowing the Barons to even the series at one-game apiece. Player of the Game: Barons’ SP Joel Fearn pitched all 9 innings, allowing 7 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K (1-0, 0.00 ERA). Meanwhile, SP Jin-man Kim went 8.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 HR, (0-1, 4.50 ERA). -------- Game 3 Stratford 6 – Braeland City 3 ![]() The series shifted to the nation’s capital with 26,600 on hand at Kings Park to witness Game 3. The Barons picked up where they left off in game 2. In the top of the 3rd inning, Stratford loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to an error (E4), a walk and a single. A single by SS Jake Walker and a sac fly by 3B Terry Maxwell brought in two runs before the Monarchs worked their way out of the jam. In the bottom of the 4th, a single by SS Finlay Ridd, a double by 3B Louie Hetherington and a sac fly by 2B Trevor Bolen scored Braeland City’s first run of the game. But Stratford would break it open in the 6th. After a lead-off single by C Gavin Hurley and a walk issued to 1B Pete Good, CF Kade Limeburner slammed SP David Cooling’s first offering to the bleachers in left-centerfield, increasing Stratford’s lead to 5-1. The Barons made it 6-1 in the top of the 8th. Gavin Hurley led off with a walk on 4 straight pitches and reached second on Pete Good’s sac bunt. PH Nam-cheol Oh then singled Hurley home. In the bottom of the 8th, RF Dwayne Hollinshead’s solo home run off of RP In-sin Ahn with two out scored the Monarchs’ second run. The Monarchs would try to get back into the game in the bottom the 9th. After issuing walks to C Rodrigo Pacheco and PH Tom Edkins with one out, Ahn would give up a double to CF Jay Atwood, scoring Pacheco. But Edkins was thrown out at home. Finlay Ridd then grounded out (4-3) to end the game and the Barons took a 2 games to 1 lead in the series. Player of the Game: Stratford’s CF Kade Limeburner went 2-4, with 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HR. SP Kazuhiko Chikafuji went 7.0 IP, allowing 7 H with 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K (1-0, 1.29 ERA) for the win. Braeland City’s SP David Cooling took the loss, going 9.0 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (0-1, 5.00 ERA). -------- Game 4 Stratford 4 – Braeland City 7 ![]() Under beautiful clear skies for Game 4, the Monarchs would fight back. In the bottom of the 2nd inning, RF Dwayne Hollinshead and LF Scott Kessler reached base safely with back-to-back singles with one out. 1B Mark Burns followed with a double, scoring Hollinshead. However, Kessler was thrown out at home while Burns reached third base safely on the same play. Following an intentional walk to C Rodrigo Pacheco, SP Lenny Freke reached safely on an error (E8), allowing Burns to score Braeland City’s second run. Braeland City made it 4-0 in the bottom of the 3rd. After SS Finlay Ridd led off with a double, 3B Louie Hetherington singled. A passed ball during 2B Trevor Bolen’s at bat allowed Ridd to score. Bolen subsequently singled, moving Hetherington to third base. Hollinshead’s sac fly then scored Hetherington for the Monarch’s fourth run. Stratford would get on the board in the 6th, when LF Bart Wallwin led off with a triple and came into score when SS Jake Walked followed him with a single. But the Monarchs would continue to add to their lead in the bottom half. A leadoff double by Hollinshead, a single by Kessler and a double by Burns scored two. A 5-3 ground out by Pacheco would score one more and the Monarchs led 7-1 after six innings. But the Barons would not go quietly, taking advantage of Braeland City miscues. In the top of the 9th, 1B Omar Fontanoza led off with a single. That ended SP Lenny Freke’s day. After 3B Don Adkins struck out, PH Nam-cheol Oh reached on an error (E4), moving Fontanoza to second. 2B Rhett Curnow singled, scoring Fontanoza. Wallwin then walked to load the bases. Another error (E4) and sac fly by 3B Terry Maxwell scored two more, but that was all the Barons could muster. The Monarchs had tied the series up at 2 games apiece. Player of the Game: As in Game 1, Monarchs’ SP Lenny Freke picked up the win. In 8.0 IP, he gave up 8 H with 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (2-0, 2.12 ERA). SP Ryan Borden suffered the loss again, going 6.0 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K (0-2, 7.50 ERA). -------- Game 5 Stratford 5 – Braeland City 3 ![]() The Stratford Barons wasted no time getting on the board. In the top of the 1st inning, 2B Rhett Curnow, SS Jake Walker and 3B Terry Maxwell all hit singles to load the bases with one out. During C Gavin Hurley’s subsequent at-bat, a wild pitch by SP Jin-man Kim allowed Curnow to score. Hurley then singled to drive in Walker and Maxwell to give the Barons an early 3-0 lead. Stratford made it 4-0 in the 3rd. After CF Kade Limeburner doubled and RF Don Adkins was intentionally walked, SP Joel Fearn singled, driving in Limeburner. Braeland City fought back in the 6th. Jin-man Kim led off with a double and scored on an error (E2) that allowed SS Jayden Whiteway to reach second. Whiteway, who entered the game when Finlay Ridd got injured, scored the second run on 2B Trevor Bolen’s single. Braeland City got to within one in the 7th. 1B Mark Burns led off with a double and scored on PH Callum Wolton’s single. Stratford got an insurance run in the top of the 9th. He went the distance, allowing 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K (2-0, 0.50 ERA). SP Jin-man Kim took his second loss of the series, going 7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 BB, 1 K, 2 HR, (0-2, 4.80 ERA). Note: Braeland City’s SS Finlay Ridd suffered an injury in the bottom of the 1st inning while trying to break up a double play at second base. The extent of his injury is not known as yet. -------- Game 6 Braeland City 1 – Stratford 2 ![]() Game 6 got underway under partly cloudy skies and turned into a low scoring affair. Stratford struck first in the bottom of the 3rd inning. SP Kazuhiko Chikafuji singled with one out and reached second on CF Kade Limeburner’s 4-3 ground out. 2B Rhett Curnow’s single then drove in Chikafuji for the game’s first run. Braeland City tied it up in the 5th in an eerily similar way. SP David Cooling singled with one out and reached second on CF Jay Atwood’s 4-3 ground out. LF Scott Kessler and 3B Louie Hetherington followed with singles, scoring Cooling and the game was tied. The game remained tied until the bottom the 8th inning. A leadoff double by 3B Terry Maxwell and single by C Gavin Hurley put runners on the corners. 1B Don Adkins then followed with a sac fly to centerfield, scoring Maxwell. In the bottom of the 9th, RP Larry Parrish got the Monarchs to go down in order, striking out Scott Kessler to end the game and send the Barons to the United Cup Series. Player of the Game: SP Kazuhiko Chikafuji did not get the win, but he made the difference, going 7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K (1-0, 1.29 ERA). SP David Cooling pitched well, but it wasn’t enough to keep Braeland City’s playoff hopes alive. Cooling went 8.0 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K (0-2, 3.71 ERA). -------- ![]()

Kingston Pelicans (94-60) vs. Cambria Cannons (79-75) Season Matchup: 10-5 in favour of Kingston Kingston: Runs scored – 817 (1st in WL); runs allowed – 630(1st in WL). Cambria: Runs scored – 767 (2nd in WL); runs allowed – 721 (3rd in WL). The 1941 Western League Pennant series features two familiar foes. For the third consecutive season, the Kingston Pelicans and Cambria Cannons squared off against each other for the Pennant. This is the fourth consecutive season that the Pelicans have reached the playoffs. Cambria prevailed last season and is the defending United Cup Champion. But things have changed. The Cannons come into the playoffs severely weakened due to season-long injuries and were never able to recapture their groove. Their best player, LF Ron Westmacott, would not make an appearance in the series after tearing ankle ligaments back in November. Meanwhile, the Pelicans cruised to a1st place finish in the West. But they began to struggle in the last couple of months as well. Both teams are looking to reassert themselves and get back to the United Cup Series where anything can happen. -------- Game 1 Cambria 2 – Kingston 9 ![]() 26,600 fans converged on Kingston Park for Game 1 of the series. The Pelicans wasted no time as 2B Mo Symes led off with a home run to right-center for the game’s first run in the bottom the 1st. SS Okura Ito followed with a single with one out and scored on 1B Fergus Chitty’s double. That made it 2-0 after 1 inning. Cambria would respond early as well. Fielding errors allowed both 1B Keane Fysh and C Glen Yeend to reach base safely in the second inning. 3B Eric Jacobs singled to score Fysh but Yeend was thrown out at third base. Cambria tied it up in the 3rd inning when a triple by LF Joe Olver scored 2B Domenic Carmody. But it would be all Kingston the rest of the way. In the 5th inning, a double and single by LF Jayden Tennant and Okura Ito respectively put runners on the corners. An errant pickoff attempt (E1) scored Tennant. After Fergus Chitty was intentionally walked, a throwing error (E4) during CF Soshu Shimizu’s at bat scored both Ito and Chitty. Kington now led 5-2. In the 7th inning, an error (E5), a walk and a sac bunt put runners on second and third. Mo Symes then doubled to score both runners. In the 8th, Kingston put runners on second and third again. C Ellis Oram then singled both runners in and the Pelicans took the first game convincingly 9-2. Player of the Game: Pelicans’ SP Darwin Monday was terrific, going the distance and scattering 5 H with 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K (1-0, 1.00 ERA). SP Bradley Dodson took the loss, going 6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (0-1, 4.50 ERA). -------- Game 2 Cambria 1 – Kingston 3 ![]() Over 27,000 crammed themselves into Kingston Park for Game 2. The fans enjoyed a pitcher’s duel between Cambria’s Nick Paddock and Kingston’s Brady Murdy. Cambria got on the board first in the 3rd inning. SP Nick Paddock led off with a first pitch double and scored after two ground outs by RF Al Tucker and 2B Domenic Carmody. But in the bottom half of the inning, SP Brady Murdy would return the favor. Murdy himself led off with a first pitch double of his own and came in to score after a LF Jayden Tennant single and SS Okura Ito sac fly. Kingston would get the go ahead runs in the 5th. After 2B Mo Symes reached base safely on a dropped throw (E1), Jayden Tennant followed him with a 2-run home run to left field. Cambria was unable to mount any comeback and Kingston took Game 2. Player of the Game: Kingston’s SP Brady Murdy was at the top of his game, pitching all 9 innings, going 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K (1-0, 0.00 ERA). For Cambria, SP Nick Paddock went 7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, (0-1, 2.57 ERA). -------- Game 3 Kingston 4 – Cambria 3 ![]() The Series shifted to Cambria as just over 24,400 packed Alexander Field to see if their Cannons could stem the tide. But it was Kingston who opened the scoring and their starting pitcher was in the thick of it. In the top of the 3rd inning, SP Joey Cumberledge led off with a single and scored when LF Jayden Tennant singled. With two out 1B Fergus Chitty doubled, scoring Tennant. That made it 2-0 Kingston after 3 innings. Cambria got on the board in the 4th. After drawing a walk, CF Clint Jones scored on a double by 1B Keane Fysh. Cambria’s Owen Tautor put up a game fight, but suffered the loss, going 8.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (0-1, 4.15 ERA). -------- Game 4 Kingston 8 – Cambria 3 ![]() Kingston poured it on in Game 4, scoring a run each in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. In the 5th, LF Jayden Tennant led off with a single and moved to second after SS Okura Ito was hit by a pitch. Singles by RF Chong-sik Lee and 3B Bob Kight scored two more and the Pelicans led 5-0. Kingston made it 7-0 in the 6th. Back-to-back singles by 2B Mo Symes and Jayden Tennant put runners on the corners. A sac fly by Okura Ito scored Symes and a single by Chong-sik Lee scored Tennant. LF Joe Olver finally got Cambria on the board in the bottom of the 6th with a solo home run to right field. Kingston added a final run in the 8th to make it 8-1. In the bottom of the 9th, Cambria made one last attempt to keep the series alive. Joe Olver led off with a single and was followed by CF Clint Jones who swatted a 2-run homer to the right-centerfield bleachers. But Darwin Monday got 1B Keane Fysh, SS Aiden Smerdon and Glen Yeend to all fly out, ending the game and the series. Player of the Game: Pelicans’ SP Darwin Monday went the distance once again, to pick up his second win in the series. His line was 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR (2-0, 2.00 ERA). The fourth United Cup Series got underway at Stratford’s Bosworth Field under partly cloudy skies with the wind blowing out to left. Over 26,100 were in attendance hoping to see if their hometown team could take down the Western League titan. Kingston had won two of the previous three United Cups and was looking for a third. As for Stratford, it was looking to become the first Eastern League to win it all. Would this be the year? Both clubs came into the Series healthy with the Pelicans pitching staff well rested after sweeping the Cambria Cannons in four games. -------- Game 1 Kingston 1 – Stratford 6 ![]() Stratford struck first in the 2nd inning. Stratford tied it up in the bottom half, thanks to a lead-off double by 1B Don Adkins, a sac bunt by SP Joel Fearn and a ground out by 2B Rhett Curnow. But Kingston would quickly respond in the 4th. After SS Okura Ito led off with a single, 1B Fergus Chitty hit an inside-the-park home run, giving the Pelicans a 3-1 lead. Stratford would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the 4th inning. Then, in the bottom of the 5th, Don Adkins took a 1-1 offering from Joey Cumberledge and slammed it into the crowd in left-centerfield, tying the game 3-3. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 9th inning. With Brenden Margerson pitching in relief of Joey Cumberledge, PH Rhys Pollitt led off with a single. Pollit was immediately followed by CF Kade Limeburner, who hit a 2-run walk-off home run to end the game and give the Barons a 2-0 series lead. They got it in spades. At first, it appeared the Barons were going to be a handful for SP Darwin Monday, as they sent 8 batters to the plate in the top of the 1st inning. But after a lead-off walk by 2B Rhett Curnow and a RBI double by LF Bart Wallwin, Monday was able to keep Stratford off the board the rest of the way. Kingston took the lead for good in the bottom of the 1st. 2B Mo Symes set the tone with a full-count leadoff home run to tie the game. A double by SS Okura Ito, a single by 1B Fergus Chitty and a ground out by RF Chong-sik Lee scored the go ahead run. After 3B Bob Kight walked to load the bases, CF Soshu Shimizu singled in Chitty for the Pelicans’ third run. In the 3rd inning, Kingston made it 2-0 when 2B Mo Symes singled and came in to score on a ground out and fielding error (E8). The Pelicans doubled their lead in the 5th. That set up Okura Ito, who sent SP Ryan Borden’s 0-2 offering yard to right-centerfield, giving the home team a 6-0 lead. The only run of the game came in the top of the 5th inning. C Gavin Hurley and 1B Don Adkins led off with back-to-back singles. A sac bunt by Joel Fearn and ground out by RF Paul DeLamare scored Hurley. That’s all the offense either team could muster. Kingston tied things up in the top of the 3rd inning. Back-to-back singles by 2B Mo Symes and LF Jayden Tennant were followed by back-to-back walks issued to SS Okura Ito and 1B Fergus Chitty. But Kazuhiko Chikafuji came through with a single, scoring Curnow for the Barons’ fourth run. That would be all the scoring in the 1941 United Cup. In the top of the 9th inning, Kingston’s CF Soshu Shimizu led off with a single. But RP Larry Parrish got C Ellis Oram to pop up (F6) and induced PH Taylor Rogalski to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and the series. The Stratford Barons were United Cup Champions, winning their first championship and becoming the first Eastern League team to win it all. Player of the Game: SP Kazuhiko Chikafuji picked up his second win of the playoffs, going 7.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 K (2-1, 4.39 ERA). SP Darwin Monday was hung with his first loss of the postseason, going 8.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR (3-1, 2.14 ERA). -------- ![]()

![]() Notes on 1940-41 All-Braeland Team Starting Pitcher There were a lot of fine performances from starting pitchers this season. But obviously this would come down to the two Satchel Paige Award winners: Braeland City’s David Cooling (21-6, 2.02 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 7.1 WAR) and Kingston’s Brady Murdy. I went with Murdy, as he had a simply dominating season, winning his third Satchel Paige Award. This really wasn’t a difficult choice for me, with all due respect to Cooling. --------- Catcher A number of catchers had fine seasons, such as: Braeland City’s Kane Broom (.295/.336/.450, 15 HR, 97 RBI, 4.4 WAR), Cambria’s Glen Yeend (.321/.360/.462, 9 HR, 83 RBI, 4.7 WAR), Fort Richmond’s Danny Trowbridge (.299/.334/.488, 15 HR, 92 RBI, 4.8 WAR) However, Watkins, who won the top fielder award and is the only catcher rated in the Top 20 position players, got the nod. --------- First Base Jim Friend had simply a monster year and is the top-rated first baseman in the United Leagues. He richly deserved winning the Babe Ruth Award this season. His only closest competitor was Kingston’s Fergus Chitty (.288/.414/.544, 30 HR, 113 RBI, 5.7 WAR). --------- Second Base This came down to between Stratford’s Rhett Curnow and Kingston’s Mo Symes (.297/.383/.447, 16 HR, 72 RBI, 6.1 WAR). Curnow is rated as the No. 1 second baseman in ULB; Symes No. 3. Symes led the ULB in plate appearances (736) and runs (125); Curnow led in hits (206) and AVG (.355). Both would have deserved the recognition, based on the season each one had. I went with Curnow, but this was the most difficult choice to make. --------- Third Base This was also a two-player race. Brunswick’s Derek Sakurai (.313/.402/.522, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 4.8 WAR) is the No. 1 rated 3B in the ULB and had a fine season. But I went with Cobourg’s Matthew Lane, the 3-time all-star who had a great season despite playing for a struggling team. --------- Shortstop The United Leagues is top heavy with shortstops: 4 of the top 5 position players call the shortstop position home. Out of those four shortstops, Kingston’s Okura Ito is rated No. 4. I find that hard to believe – no disrespect to Stratford’s Jake Walker (.335/.453/.507, 6 HR, 62 RBI, 7.0 WAR), Katsunan Chikafuji (.316/.377/.522, 25 HR, 100 RBI, 6.4 WAR) and Embro’s Gary Watkinson (.336/.444/.435, 5 HR, 70 RBI, 6.1 WAR). But Ito never seems to take a game off. Although this past season was perhaps a step below his previous campaigns – this is the first season his WAR rating dropped below 8.0. --------- Left Field No contest. Steven Winstanley was in a class all by himself. No other left fielder came close, although Cambria’s Joe Olver (.336/.363/.486, 13 HR, 79 RBI, 5.6 WAR) is no slouch and has been improving with every season. --------- Center Field Terence Durney did not have the monster year like he did last season. But like Winstanley, there was no other center fielder that had a campaign even remotely resembling Durney’s. In fact, the gap was even greater here than at left field. --------- Right Field This was another easy choice. Only Brunswick’s Mark Elston (.317/.430/.517, 18 HR, 99 RBI, 5.7 WAR) came close to Mr. Hooks.

1941 Offseason: United Leagues Adjust to New Realities The 1941 offseason saw upheaval and roster changes unlike any other in the young league’s existence. Over 100 players of Japanese citizenship were denied entry into Braeland to continue their careers in the United Leagues. This comes in the wake of the Braeland government’s decision to cut-off diplomatic relations with the Empire of Japan. Despite the heightened tension in the region, the United Leagues enter the 1941-42 season fully committed to bringing baseball fans in Braeland another exciting season. And the Leagues would also like to remind its patrons that they will continue see great diversity in the teams’ lineups. Native-born players of Japanese descent are not affected by any external politics and the league will continue see players from places like Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan grace the field. Not to mention the African American and Latin American players returning from all across the Americas. It’s time to shut out the world’s problems and enjoy some baseball – at least for a little while. [Note: Although the official date of the Braeland embargo against Japan is stated as July 28, I retired the players from Japan on May 5 within the game itself. This was done so that the teams would have ample time to make adjustments to their rosters and make any moves/trades deemed necessary before training camps opened.] Here are the significant trades that went down in the off months, leading up to ‘Spring’ Training: April 24: The Queensland Eagles acquired 27-year old RF Aaron Flanagan (68/68) from the Downie Chiefs. In return, the Chiefs received five minor leaguers: 23-year old 3B Maluhia Mara (31/72); 20-year old SS Ramón Hernández (22/45); 20-year old RP Emosi Punahele (21/41); 20-year old 2B Misao Fujita (contract terminated on July 28, 1941); and 23-year old RP Callum Adnams (21/34). Flanagan joins his third team after just one season with Downie. Mostly an outfielder in his career, he has played first base from time-to-time. In fact, with the Wolseley Unions in 1939-40, he started 124 games at first base and enjoyed his best season. Not surprisingly then, the Eagles have installed him as their first baseman, at least in the early going. He is rated as the third best 1B in the United Leagues, behind Embro’s Jim Friend and Kingston’s Fergus Chitty. The Chiefs get some minor league depth that could help the big club, but there are no standouts in this lot. The best is the Fijian Mara, who won’t be anything special at the plate, but has blazing speed and excellent defense at 3B and SS. A good pick up by Queensland, even though they already have Rookie of the Year winner Dean Bishop manning the position. Umm, stay tuned. ![]() -------- April 24: The Stratford Barons and Hespeler Stars pulled off a blockbuster trade barely after the dust had settled on the United Cup playoffs. The Barons acquired 25-year old OF Steven Winstanley (76/76) in exchange for the following five minor league players: 19-year old RP Arthur Collier (22/80 - #13 overall pick in 1940-41); 20-year old RP Kai Torr (28/79); 20-year old SP Jake Pyle (21/45); 23-year old Ryan Bebbington (23/24); and 18-year old C Joe Guyon (21/24). The Barons receive one of the most dynamic young players in the United Leagues today, as Winstanley comes off a season that saw him earn both a Babe Ruth Award and a Top Fielder Award. For a player that does everything well and who leads by example, you would expect the Stars’ haul in exchange to be impressive. But I don’t know if two relief pitchers qualify as that. Collier and Torr are destined to be top-notch relief pitchers in time, but that is all they will be as they have only two pitches in their repertoire. Pyle has a chance to develop into a reasonable starter, but will have to work on his command. His stuff is OK and he has excellent movement. But this is not the haul I would have accepted for a player of Winstanley’s stature. ![]() -------- May 8: The Wolseley Unions traded 27-year old 1B Rubén Sánchez (57/57) to the Cambria Cannons. In return, the Unions received four minor league players: 20-year old C Zenon-Alejandro Deang (23/68); 18-year old RP Finlay Capstick (21/78); 22-year old 1B Merlin Stewart (21/22); and 19-year old CF Stephen Dronfield (20/22). Sánchez is coming off his first all-star season (.299, 12 HR, 82 HR, 5.5 WAR). The question is – was it just a fluke or has Sánchez taken his career to the next level? The Cannons obviously think the latter. Sánchez is a good contact hitter with tremendous defense at 1B and SS. He is speedy on the base paths but base stealing is not considered a strength. He will take over SS from Aiden Smerdon, who moves to 2B. For Wolseley, they receive Deang, a promising offensive catcher with defensive limitations and Capstick, a relief pitcher with good stuff, movement and excellent control. If he can work on his changeup, he could be a 5th starter. But for now he looks like a bullpen stalwart. ![]() -------- May 20: The Embro Suns and Pulberry Trolleys completed a 3-player trade. Pulberry acquires 30-year old RF Anthony Stavely (68/68). In return, Embro receives 30-year old LF Tony Blakeney (41/41) and 20-year old minor league SS Douglas Paget (22/43). Stavely was underutilized in Embro, with stalwarts 1B Jim Friend and RF Paul Hooks preventing him from starting regularly. Stavely is a nightmare defensively, so his move to 1B in Pulberry is no doubt for the best. He is a two-time all-star with decent contact and is extremely patient at the plate. Blakeney largely comes to Embro to fill Stavely’s role. However, he has exceptional power and won’t embarrass himself defensively in the outfield. Paget is a mid-level prospect that should rise quickly in Embro’s prospect-poor farm system. He is an average contract hitter with below average defense and outstanding speed. ![]() ![]() -------- May 28: The Stratford Barons also completed a trade with the Wellington Athletics. Wellington receives 26-year old CF Pete Good (57/65). In exchange, Stratford receives 30-year old RP Phil Edginton (34/34) and 21-year old minor league C Geoff Lemoine (24/77). With the acquisition of Steven Winstanley last month, the Barons deemed that Pete Good was expendable, and with the Athletics in desperate need of a productive 1B, the Barons found a trading partner. Defensively, Good is great. Really great. He can play every position except SS and C and play them well. He is decidedly average at the plate but should be an upgrade at first base, as Wellington struggled getting steady production from there. In return, Stratford essentially gets a catching prospect that has a chance to be above average at the plate with excellent power and a good eye. He is decent defensively as well. ![]() -------- June 26: The Braeland City Monarchs completed a deal with the Queensland Eagles. The Monarchs received 26-year old 1B Dean Bishop (70/70); in exchange, the Eagles got 28-year old 2B Tom Edkins (57/58) and 20-year old minor leaguer RF Marcus Maundrell (22/65). So essentially, the Eagles exchanged one Rookie of the Year player for another. After acquiring the 1938-39 Rookie of the Year winner Aaron Flanagan back in April, the Eagles deemed this past season’s winner, Dean Bishop expendable. Bishop will be a huge upgrade at 1B for the Monarchs, who have been on the hunt for an impact player. Last season, Mark Burns (.272, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 0.2 WAR) was the nominal first baseman. Not coincidentally, he was traded later the same day to the Sherburn Tigers in a minor deal. In exchange, the Eagles get some infield depth in Edkins, who is very capable defensively at a number of IF/OF positions and can hit for average. They also receive OF Maundrell who is really nothing special at the plate, but is a wizard defensively and is dangerous on the base paths. ![]() ![]() -------- Last year, the five top teams in the War Gained department were all Eastern League teams. This year, its only 4! Nevertheless, it’s the Eastern League again that has been the benefactor of major league talent migrating from the West. In some cases, it was simply the matter of one impact player changing hands. The Braeland City Monarchs (7.0 WAR) came out on top, thanks to the acquisitions of two 1B: Dean Bishop (from Queensland) and Isaac Harker (from Sherburn). Stratford came second with 6.6 WAR. That is entirely from the acquisition of Steven Winstanley from the Hespeler Stars. Winstanley was worth 8.8 WAR alone. The Cambria Cannons of the Western League gained in WAR, thanks to the acquisition of SS Rubén Sánchez (5.5 WAR) from the Wosleley Unions. Not surprisingly, the loss of Winstanley saw Hespeler tumble hard to the bottom of the WAR Gained standings. Wolseley lost the second most, mainly from the Sánchez deal. ![]()

Opening Day Forecasts Opening Day is here and it’s time to check out the results of the “Coconut Leagues” as well as the projected finishes for both the Eastern and Western Leagues. We’ll start as we usually do with the East: ![]() ![]() --------- The Embro Suns finished on top, just like they did last season, 3 games up on the defending United Cup champions, Stratford Barons. There really are no surprises here, as both the Downie Chiefs and Cobourg Red Stockings are at the bottom of the standings, just as they are expected to be during the regular season. The usual suspects, the Sun, Barons, Queensland Eagles and Braeland City Monarchs were expected to be competitive this season. It’s the predicted standings were things get a little interesting. The Brunswick Legends, guided by second year manager Babe Ruth, are on top with 96 wins, five games up on the Embro Suns and six up on the Stratford Barons. But perhaps the biggest item to be gleaned is that four teams are predicted to finish with 90 or more wins, with two more with 80+ victories. That speaks of the highly competitive East, in stark contrast with Western League. During the course of the Coconut Leagues, the Stratford Barons were involved in two significant trades; one with the Queensland Eagles and the other with the Kingston Pelicans. Trade #1: On September 15, the Barons and Eagles completed a three-player deal. Stratford receives 25-year old CF Ben Watson (65/66). Going to Queensland are 26-year old LHP Justin Hayhurst (36/36) and 20-year old minor league C Young-pil Pak (25/74). Knee-jerk Analysis: Stratford looks to add a bit more punch to its outfield by adding Watson, who has tape-measure power, great speed on the base paths and solid defense. He will be Stratford’s new lead-off hitter. However, he did have an off year in Queensland and perhaps that dropped his value as all the Eagles get in return is a washed up junk-ball relief pitcher and a 3rd-round pick from last season’s draft. Pak has the potential to be something special at the plate but really need to improve his defense. ![]() --------- And now the Western League: ![]() ![]() --------- Once again, the results of the Coconut Leagues look promising for the West, as only six games separated first from last place. The Cambria Cannons finished on top, followed by the Fort Richmond Generals and the Hespeler Stars. However, the predicted standings see the Kingston Pelicans right back in the mix of things, 3 games back of Cambria. Despite the loss of SS Okura Ito, the Pelicans are still a talented club. So while two teams are predicted to finish with above .500 records, it won’t be a runaway. Will this be the year that the Generals, Stars or Balmoral Giants manage to sneak into the playoffs? Trade #2: On September 4, the Barons and Pelicans completed a three-player deal. Kingston receives 29-year old 3B Terry Maxwell (74/76). In return, Stratford receives 32-year old RHP Darwin Monday (61/61) and 22-year old minor league RHP Luke Woodward (72/80). Knee-jerk Analysis: A very interesting trade for both sides. With the earlier acquisition of Steven Winstanley, the Barons obviously felt that they could afford to part with the talented Maxwell in order to beef up their pitching staff. Getting SP Monday and RP Woodward does exactly that. Monday, along with Ryan Borden (77/77) and Joel Fearn (77/77) will form an enviable 1-2-3 punch in the rotation. Woodward appears ready for prime time and will complement arguably the strongest bullpen in the United Leagues. For Kingston, getting Maxwell could help offset the loss of Okura Ito, adding a bit more punch in the lineup. As for the loss of Monday, the Pelicans are banking on a couple of younsters (Harley Bracher – 46/58 and Charlie Gilbert – 37/68) to step in and step up in the back end of the rotation. ![]() ![]() --------- To round out the snapshot of the United Leagues, here are the top players and pitchers and top prospects as updated on Opening Day. Play ball!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Eastern League: Suns Blaze the Early Lead ![]() ![]() ![]() -------- ![]() The Embro Suns have fallen into the habit of starting off strong and then fading as the season progresses. But this season, they appear to be bucking that trend. The Suns boast the best record in the ULB after two months and give no indication of slowing down. At one point, they went 15-1 during this past stretch. Have things fallen into place for the Suns this season? Their offense is above average (.277/.356/.423 – 4th/3rd/2nd) and their pitching is strong (3.52/3.34/4.86 – 2nd/2nd/6th), with the exception of the bullpen. Defensively, the Suns rate 2nd in the East (.697). Top Position Player: He may not have won a Batter of the Month honour in either October or November, but 27-year old CF Terence Durney (.345/.423/.570, 8 HR, 40 RBI, 57 R, 29 BB) has been the most consistent, playing at a high level through two months. Paul Hooks (.311/.422/.601, 9 HR, 44 RBI, 29 R, 33 BB), who won Batter of the Month in October, slumped in November (.241). Top Pitcher: Tough call between SP Edward Hill (9-2, 2.48 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) and SP Pete Allison (8-3, 2.56 ERA, 1.20 WAR), but I’ll go with Hill, who has come on strong of late, whereas Allison has begun to struggle at the same time. But both have been fairly impressive to start the season. Key Injuries: None currently. However, SS Gary Watkinson (.325/.447/.450, 1 HR, 18 RBI, 23 R, 26 BB) missed three weeks due to a strained posterior cruciate ligament. -------- ![]() The Brunswick Legends lived up to their advanced billing, starting off the season strong. Only the Embro Suns have been stronger in October/November. Like the Suns, the Legends enjoyed a hot stretch; in November they went 12-1 at one point. The offense is a real strength (.294/.373/.420 – 1st/1st/3rd), and the pitching staff leads in a number of categories (3.19/2.88/5.14 – 1st/1st/7th). Only the bullpen could see some major improvement. The defense however, is tops in the East (.713). Top Position Player: Like Terence Durney of the Suns, RF Mark Elston (.395/.524/.605 5 HR, 27 RBI, 37 R, 34 BB) has performed at a high level thus far into the season, richly deserving Batter of the Month honours in November. CF Harry Chatwin (.288/.371/.460, 7 HR, 18 RBI, 38 R, 25 BB, 14 SB), who won Rookie of the Month honours in October, is tied with Elston for WAR thus far (2.5). However, Chatwin did slump a tad in November (.232). Chatwin was a 4th round pick by the Legends back in 1938-39. Top Pitcher: SP Anastasio Rodríguez (5-1, 2.05 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) has picked up where he left off last season, where he practically carried the pitching staff with the season-long loss of Matthew Monroe (5-3, 4.02 ERA, 1.34 WHIP). After a slow start, Hirotada Fukushima (8-2, 2.51 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) came alive in November, winning Pitcher of the Month Honours. Interestingly, the entire starting rotation is left-handed, while the bullpen is entirely right-handed. [As a side note, I noticed that the pitching staffs in the ULB are now comprised of five starters and three relievers. Up until now, it was just two relievers.] Noteworthy: The lineup has really been firing on all cylinders. One highlight was 3B Derek Sakurai (.288/.396/.497, 6 HR, 39 RBI, 42 R, 35 BB) who hit three triples in a game against the Wellington Athletics back on October 31, setting an EL regular season game record. Brunswick prevailed 13-3. Key Injuries: None currently. However, Mark Elston missed two weeks in October with a sprained ankle and Anastasio Rodríguez missed three weeks due to an oblique strain. -------- ![]() The Stratford Barons started the season off strong, but then faltered in November to fall 4.5 games behind Brunswick for the wild card. In fact, if not for their current 6 game winning streak to end the month, November would have been a complete disaster. It would seem though that their recent struggles are more of a blip, as the Barons are a well-balanced club. The offense has been strong (.286/.355/.435 – 2nd/4th/1st) as has their pitching (3.65/3.73/3.10– 3rd/ 3rd/2nd). Stratford is ranked 3rd in defense (.692). Top Position Player: The offense has seen some strong performances thus far. I’ll go with 2B Rhett Curnow (.352/.389/.513, 5 HR, 26 RBI, 30 R, 13 BB) who started off strong in October and has only gotten stronger in November. Top Pitcher: SP Joel Fearn (9-2, 2.27 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) has led the way for Barons in the first two months. His efforts earned him a Pitcher of the Month award in October. Noteworthy: 1B Don Adkins (.339/.412/.545, 5 HR, 32 RBI, 23 R, 30 BB) enjoyed a 23-game hitting streak that ended on November 2 against the Braeland City Monarchs. Key Injuries: None currently. However, RF Steven Winstanley (.273/.369/.402, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 22 R, 22 BB, 3 SB) missed 3 weeks in October due to a sprained finger. -------- ![]() The Wellington Athletics struggled out of the gate this season, and although they picked things up in November, they find themselves in danger of becoming an afterthought in the highly competitive East. Going 0-6 to start the season certainly didn’t help. The offense has taken a tumble this season (.258/.331/.383 – 7th/7th/4th), and their pitching has only been middle of the road (3.93/3.85/4.56 –4th/4th/5th). They also have not helped themselves defensively either (.677 – 6th). Top Position Player: 30-year old 3B Ryley McLarnon (.301/.351/.427, 2 HR, 21 RBI, 29 R, 17 BB, 9 SB) has been the most consistent Athletics to open the season. Top Pitcher: It’s been an uneven start for the pitching staff, but 37-year old SP Frank Leadbeater (5-4, 2.84 ERA, 1.57 WHIP) has been the most consistent. Key Injury: 39-year old RF Quentin Stubber (.238/.442/.413, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 10 R, 23 BB) strained a groin muscle back on November 8; he is out for another two weeks. -------- ![]() Like the Wellington Athletics, the Queensland Eagles find themselves in a tough spot, as an off month has seen them tumble in the standings. They started off 6-0 in October, but haven’t been able to maintain it. They swept 3 games from Kingston in November, but in turn, were swept in 3 games by the Pulberry Trolleys, Wolseley Unions and Balmoral Giants in interleague action. The Eagles need to regroup and find what’s ailing them. They are a middle of the team on both offense (.267/.343/.365 – 6th/5th/7th) and pitching (3.97/3.99/3.86 – 5th/5th/4th), but their defense can use some help (.676 – 7th). Top Position Player: 26-year old SS Katsunan Chikafuji (.310/.383/.399, 2 HR, 31 RBI, 30 R, 25 BB) has been the most consistent player on offense thus far. Top Pitcher: 24-year old Taiwanese SP Pi-ao Quian (4-5, 2.84 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) is enjoying his best season thus far. Quian was a 9th overall pick back in 1939-40. Key Injuries: None currently. However, SP Bradley Paris (1-4, 5.61 ERA, 1.62 WHIP) missed 3 weeks due to hamstring teninitis back in October. 44-year old Toby Reakes (.213/.356/.262, 5-2B, 7 RBI, 22 R, 32 BB, 8 SB) missed 2 weeks in October/November with shoulder tendinitis. -------- ![]() The Braeland City Monarchs are experiencing a rude awakening this season, as they find themselves trailing the top clubs by a good distance. The Monarchs have usually been one of the top contending teams in the past few seasons. Tellingly, the Monarchs changed their team focus from ‘win now’ to ‘neutral’ on December 1. Their offense has been fairly competitive (.280/.359/.380 – 3rd/2nd/5th). But the pitching is really struggling (4.49/4.33/5.70 – 6th/6th/8th) and their defense is atrocious (.673 – 8th). Top Position Player: 31-year old CF Jay Atwood (.319/.428/.512, 7 HR, 31 RBI, 36 R, 31 BB) has had a strong start to the season. Top Pitcher: The Monarchs have only two productive pitchers thus far: Lenny Freke (6-5, 2.97 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) and David Cooling (7-4, 3.03 ERA, 1.26 WHIP). Key Injuries: Not helping things have been multiple injuries to both 3B Louie Hetherington (.290/.371/.387, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 22 R, 20 BB) and C Kane Broom (.264/.355/.368, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 15 R, 15 BB). Hetherington missed all of ‘spring’ training and the first two weeks of the season due to a fractured finger. He is currently out with hamstring tendinitis. He should be back in 1-2 weeks. Kane has missed most of November with a strained groin muscle. He is expected to return in 2 weeks. -------- ![]() With six victories in October, it appeared that the Cobourg Red Stockings were picking up where they left off last season, where seven or fewer wins per month were the norm. The ‘Bled’ Stockings even endured a 1-15 stretch over October/November. But they did pick things up for the rest of November, finishing up 10-11. One could hope that speaks of things looking up for Cobourg, but the jury is still out on that. Way out. On the bright side, Cobourg now features 5 rookies in the starting lineup and rotation: CF Cliff Jorden (.258), C Neil Voigt (.210), 2B George Simpson (just called up), SS Júlio Gonzáles (.291) and SP Ramón Ramírez (1-0, 3.00 ERA). So perhaps they can help Cobourg become more competitive. Heaven knows, they need it. The offense stinks (.255/.317/.357 – 8th/8th/8th), as does the starting rotation (5.37/.6.09/.2.83 – 8th/.8th/1st). Their defense, however, has not been terrible (.678 – 4th). Top Position Player: I was tempted to go with no one, but 22-year old SS Júlio Gonzáles (.291/.319/.447, 4 HR, 19 RBI, 22 R, 7 BB) has been getting better with each passing week. He won Rookie of the Month honours in November. Top Pitcher: This is a sorry sight. But 41-year old RP Keith Kearney (0-0, 0.87 ERA, 1.11 WHIP in 20.2 IP) is the only pitcher that bears some resemblance to an actual pitcher so far on this team. Key Injuries: None. -------- ![]() Move over Cobourg. The Downie Chiefs have taken up the mantle of being the most inept team in the East, winning only 6 and 9 games in October/November. A seven game losing streak to start the season set the tone. Injuries have not helped things, but this is a team in real need of a talent infusion. That said, while the offense (.274/.337/.379 – 5th/6th/6th) and pitching (5.16/.5.48/.368 – 7th/7th/3rd) have not been great, but have not been the worst around either. Defensively, they rank 5th (.677). Top Position Player: 30-year old 1B William Tozer (.360/.457/.549, 7 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R, 33 BB) has been simply outstanding at the plate for the Chiefs. Top Pitcher: No one has distinguished themselves on the pitching staff thus far. Perhaps things will pick up in the ensuing months. Key Injuries: 3B Andy Johnson (.255/.366/.327, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 15 R, 18 BB) suffered a knee contusion (2 weeks) in October and now a hamstring strain since November 25. He is out for two more weeks. RF Harrison Brooks (.286/.394/.446, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 10 R, 10 BB) suffered a broken kneecap back on October 25. He is out for 3 more months. LF Patrick Vick (.297/.364/.514, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 3 R, 5 BB) fractured his thumb back on November 19. He is out for 4 weeks. -------- ![]()

Western League: Parity the New Norm? ![]() ![]() ![]() -------- ![]() The Cambria Cannons appear to be picking up where they left off two seasons ago, where they ruled the roost in the West on their way to the United Cup. But it appears the Western League will not remain a two-team outfit, as five other teams are within 8 games of top spot. That no doubt that speaks of the upheaval most rosters have gone through with the loss of key Japanese-born players as well as a renew resurgence in once moribund teams. Time will only tell if parity is here to stay for a while. But the Cannons have enjoyed consistent play over the first two months of the season, despite a rash of injuries and are looking to prove that their championship run two seasons ago wasn’t a fluke. Their offense has been middle of the road (.273/.338/.392 – 4th/5th/4th), no doubt affected by injuries to the starting lineup. But their pitching has been decent (3.85/3.99/2.81 – 3rd/4th/3rd). Defensively, they have been solid (.698 – 2nd), something that could not be said of a Cannons team the past couple of seasons. Top Position Player: 28-year old SS Rubén Sánchez (.300/.335/.440, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 27 R, 10 BB), who was acquired from Wolseley in the offseason, was Cambria’s offensive leader in October/November. Top Pitcher: 32-year old ace Nick Paddock (8-3, 3.09 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) leads a resurgent rotation in the early going. Key Injuries: 1B Keane Fysh (.247/.358/.344, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 8 R, 16 BB) is out of action due to a hamstring strain suffered back on November 24. He is out for another two weeks. He missed 2 weeks with a herniated disc back in October a well. RF Clint Jones (.291/.351/.437, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 25 R, 14 BB, 8 SB) strained a rib cage muscle on November 21. He should be back in a couple of weeks. LF Ron Westmacott (.295/.396/.551, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 16 R, 12 BB, 3 SB) missed 4-5 weeks due to a fractured finger suffered on October 29. He just returned to the lineup this past week. -------- ![]() Like the majority of teams residing in the West, the Fort Richmond Generals have yet to enjoy a winning season, much less realize a playoff appearance. So the first two months of the 1941-42 must seem hopeful to Generals fans. The Generals find themselves in 2nd spot in the West, just 3 games back of Cambria. But most importantly, they are 6 games above .500. But the Generals have started off fairly strong before, so we will have to see if they can keep it up for an entire season. That said, both the offense (.291/.350/.395 – 2nd/3rd/3rd) and pitching (3.52/3.67/2.63 – 1st/2nd/2nd) have been outstanding thus far. Only the defense (.684 – 8th) has been a sore point. Top Position Player: A lot to choose from. My pick is RF Gavin Bansfield (.314/.408/.444, 5 HR, 38 RBI, 24 R, 26 BB). Top Pitcher: The 16th overall pick back in 1937-38, 22-year old SP Dean Stroud (7-2, 2.81 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) is enjoying his best season so far. Key Injuries: None. -------- ![]() Like the Generals, it appears things are starting to fall into place for the Balmoral Giants. Balmoral finds itself tied for second spot in the West and it’s not a fluke. As bad as they were last year, the Giants are making a complete turnaround. Their offense (.293/.353/.410 – 1st/2nd/2nd) and pitching (3.64/3.87/2.03 – 2nd/2nd/1st) have been top-notch. Defensively, they have been pretty good as well (.696 – 3rd). Rookies are making an impact, as Balmoral players won Rookie of the Month honours in both October and November. Top Position Player: Some good performances to choose from. I’ll go with SS Francisco Rodríguez (.342/.342/.383, 2 HR, 29 RBI, 26 R, 16 BB). 21-year old international free agent 3B Otton Overbeek (.418/.473/.608, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 11 R, 10 BB) from Aruba and 25-year old C Brian Pittman (.280/.337/.387, 1 HR, 19 RBI, 21 R, 15 BB) have each made a positive impact, with each winning Rookie of Month honours. Pittman, who was a 6th round pick back in 1937-38, has really developed well over the past few seasons and has taken over Balmoral’s starting catcher spot. Top Pitcher: 36-year old Dave Mapp (3-4, 2.96 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) has been the most consistent to start the season among pitchers. Esteban Leyva, who won Pitcher of the Month honours in October, faltered badly in November (2-3, 6.02 ERA, 11 K, 21 BB). Key Injury: 28-year old 3B Chito Domogma (.243/.346/.348, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 15 R, 18 BB) injured himself in a collision at a base back on November 29. He suffered an oblique strain and will miss 3 weeks. -------- ![]() The Kingston Pelicans started off well but faltered in November, where they were outscored 76-108 in 26 games. It’s unfamiliar territory for the Pelicans as they find themselves at .500 and 3 games back of a playoff spot. No doubt Kingston is still adjusting to the loss of key players like offensive stalwart SS Okura Ito, but the biggest concern right now is their pitching. Overall offensively, they have been competitive (.268/.346/.413 – 5th/4th/1st) but they are no longer elite. Their pitching staff though is really struggling (4.52/4.36/5.40 – 7th/6th/8th). Defensively, they are in the middle (.690 – 5th). Top Position Player: 33-year old 1B Fergus Chitty (.331/.450/.558, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R, 35 BB) has played at a very high level thus far, even though he has not won a Batter of the Month Award, unlike 2B Mo Symes (.305/.427/.511, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 51 R, 40 BB) and LF Jayden Tennant (.303/.390/.586, 13 HR, 44 RBI, 38 R, 28 BB). But Mo Symes cooled off considerably in November and in my humble opinion, Chitty had a better month than Tennant. Top Pitcher: SP Francis Slocock (4-3, 2.91 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) has been the most consistent pitcher on a staff that is in search of some stability. Not helping is the struggles of 33-year old Brady Murdy (4-8, 5.97 ERA, 1.61 WHIP) who is looking very human this season. Key Injury: RP Brenden Margerson suffered a torn rotator cuff during ‘spring’ training. He is gone for the season. -------- ![]() The Sherburn Tigers have remained competitive for the first couple of months of the season, standing just a game under .500. Sherburn’s offense (.280/.353/.379 – 3rd/1st/5th) and pitching (4.03/4.00/4.24 – 4th/5th/5th) reflect their improved play. They rank 6th (.687) in defensive efficiency. Top Position Player: 29-year old 2B Damien Davis (.340/.417/.422, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 15 R, 20 BB) has been Sherburn’s top offensive player over the first two months. Top Pitcher: 26-year old Korean SP Myung-gu Son (7-1, 3.05 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) is enjoying the best start of his career in the ULB, and won Pitcher of the Month honours in November. Son was a 14th overall pick by the Tigers in 1937-38. Key Injury: None currently. However, CF Harold Yoder (.340/.379/.384, 3-2B, 12 RBI, 21 R, 8 BB, 3 SB) missed two weeks in October due to a sprained elbow. -------- ![]() The Wolseley Unions are another team that may benefit from greater parity in the Western League, as they stand just 3.5 games back of the wild card. However, they will really need to improve their offense if they want to have any realistic chance of competing this season. Wolseley’s offense (.254/.318/.353 – 6th/7th/7th) is really soft, while the pitching (4.05/3.94/4.58 – 5th/3rd/6th) has not been much better overall. Defensively, they are struggling as well (.685 – 7th). Top Position Player: The offense has not been very great to start the season, but 23-year old CF Zak Kidd (.282/.332/.450, 4 HR, 26 RBI, 23 R, 16 BB, 8 SB) can certainly play. Top Pitcher: There are no standouts thus far in the rotation, but 33-year old SP Jean-Pierre Da Silva (3-6, 3.89 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) has not been awful. Also, 22-year old prospect SP Kai Tosh is showing some promise, going 4-1, 3.64, 1.58 WHIP thus far in 5 starts. Key Injuries: None. -------- ![]() With the trade of OF Steven Winstanley to the Stratford Barons during the offseason, the Hespeler Stars signaled that they weren’t interested in competing this season and the first two months of the season bear that out. They have some young talent in the rotation and starting lineup, but there will be growing pains as they get acclimated to the majors. Their offense has been horrendous (.241/.289/.322 – 8th/8th/8th) while the pitching is only marginally better (4.22/4.48/3.18 – 6th/7th/4th). They are good defensively, however (.700 – 1st). Top Position Player: Despite his injuries, 22-year old C Aaron Skidmore (.278/.382/.438, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 21 R, 25 BB) has been Hespeler’s best offensive player so far. Skidmore was the first overall pick in 1940-41. Top Pitcher: I’ll with 24-year old RP Maurice Dingle (3-1, 6 SV, 1.80 ERA, 1.43 WHIP), as the starters have yet to show much consistency in their outings. Key Injuries: C Aaron Skidmore strained his back on November 27. He is out for 3 more weeks. He missed the first week of the regular season due to shoulder soreness. 37-year old RF Louie Maylam was diagnosed with a torn labrum in game back on October 11. He is out for 4 more months. -------- ![]() While the majority of the Western League is enjoying some parity this season, the Pulberry Trolleys, like Hespeler, are on the outside looking in. They have some young talent on the roster and in the pipeline, but they could sure use some more. They are near the bottom on both offense (.252/.323/.368 – 7th/6th/6th) and pitching (4.82/4.76/5.16 – 8th/8th/7th). Defensively, they are in the middle (.694 – 4th). Top Position Player: 1B Anthony Stavely (.298/.381/.470, 5 HR, 31 RBI, 22 R, 23 BB), who was acquired from Embro in a trade this past offseason, was Pulberry’s most consistent offensive player in October and November. Top Pitcher: Not a lot to choose from, but I’ll go with 30-year old SP Declan Lumby (5-3, 3.34 ERA, 1.48 WHIP). Key Injuries: None. Although SP Arnold Perkins (4-6, 3.43 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) did suffer forearm cramps while throwing his alarm clock across the room. He is day-to-day for the next 4 days. -------- ![]()

1941-42 Amateur Draft Results Queensland, Dunwich (BP) – The United Leagues took time out from the regular season to select their future stars at the fifth annual Amateur Draft, held at Queensland’s Waterfront Auditorium. This year, the Cobourg Red Stockings selected first, followed by the Hespeler Stars and Pulberry Trolleys. Here is a brief sketch of the players taken in the first round: 1st Pick – Cobourg Red Stockings: ![]() ![]() 3B Shelby Cain (57/80) – 23-years old; 5’-7”, 170 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws RH The Red Stockings selected a 23-year old infielder from the small town of Port Talbot, Perth that is predicted to reach the major league level very soon. Cain is a very solid hitter with tremendous power and unparalleled plate discipline. Third base is his strongest position defensively and he has good foot speed. Update: Shortly after making the selection, the Red Stockings announced that they will indeed promote Cain immediately to their major league roster, where he is expected to lead off. It will be interesting to see how he responds to the high expectations. -------- 2nd Pick – Hespeler Stars: ![]() ![]() OF Marcus Peyto (22/71) – 21-years old; 5’-11”, 185 lbs.; Hits LH/Throws LH Peyto projects to be an above-average contact hitter with elite power and good plate discipline. Right field and first base are his strongest positions in field defensively. He has very good speed on the base paths once he gets going, but is not considered an elite base stealer. -------- 3rd Pick – Pulberry Trolleys: ![]() ![]() OF Jarod Dwyer (23/74) – 22-years old; 5’-11”, 180 lbs.; Hits LH/Throws RH Dwyer also projects to be a well-balanced offensive player with decent defensive abilities. He is fast on the base paths and will be able to steal a few bases. -------- 4th Pick – Balmoral Giants: ![]() ![]() IF Sean Brearton (22/69) – 18-years old; 5’-10”, 155 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws RH Brearton has the potential to become an outstanding contact hitter with just a little pop. He projects to be a capable albeit not great defender with very good speed and bunting skills. -------- 5th Pick – Downie Chiefs: ![]() ![]() OF Robin Duerden (21/74) – 19-years old; 6’-1”, 180 lbs.; Hits LH/Throws RH The fifth straight Braelander selected, Duerden also has the potential to be a very good contact hitter with some pop, but will need to work on his discipline to maximize his value at the plate. A versatile fielder, Duerden is only average defensively and on the base paths. -------- 6th Pick – Sherburn Tigers: ![]() ![]() SP Jim Ferguson (22/74) – 20-years old; 5’-10”, 170 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws LH The first pitcher and first non-Braelander selected in this year’s draft, the 20-year old Ferguson from Pompton Lakes, New Jersey has above average stuff, outstanding movement and pretty good command. He is able to change speeds nicely. If he is able to put it all together, he could be a future ace. -------- 7th Pick – Wolseley Unions: ![]() ![]() OF Rizalino Ringor (22/77) – 19-years old; 6’-0”, 180 lbs.; Hits SH/Throws RH The Unions pick up an outstanding offensive prospect with great contact, power and patience. Ringor boast tremendous speed and base stealing instincts. Only his defensive game betrays any weakness. -------- 8th Pick – Fort Richmond Generals: ![]() ![]() SS Matthew Welson (22/56) – 21-years old; 5’-9”, 170 lbs.; Hits RH/Throws RH Welson is an interesting prospect. While he has poor eye/discipline (30/40), he somehow will be terrific at avoiding strikes (45/80)? At any rate, he is another speedy player with fearsome base-stealing instincts and some defensive skills, especially at second base. -------- Here is the rest of the first round, selections 9-16: 9th Pick – Queensland Eagles: 1B Andre Gale (21/66) – contact (30/55), gap power (40/50) and eye (25/50). 19-years old; 6’-1”, 205 lbs.; pull hitter; Hits RH/Throws RH The New Zealander projects to be major power hitter, coupled with decent contact. Defense and speed however, are not part of his repertoire. -------- 10th Pick – Cambria Cannons: OF Brian Cosey (23/76) – contact (45/60), gap power (35/45) and eye (30/45). 20-years old; 5’-11”, 175 lbs.; normal hitter; Hits LH/Throws LH The young outfielder should be a very good line-drive hitter with excellent speed and solid defense. -------- 11th Pick – Embro Suns: C César Morales (22/80) – contact (45/70), gap power (40/55) and eye (25/45). 19-years old; 5’-8”, 175 lbs.; pull hitter; Hits RH/Throws LH The first catcher taken in the draft, the Dominican Morales boast good contact and power potential, but will need to work on his plate discipline and defense behind the plate. -------- 12th Pick – Brunswick Legends: SP Tatsui Maruyama (23/72) – stuff (35/40), movement (60/65) and control (35/55). 22-years old; 6’-4”, 210 lbs.; groundball tendency; 89-91 Mph velocity; Hits RH/Throws RH The second pitcher selected, Maruyama is considered an outstanding prospect with above- average stuff, top-notch movement and solid control. He already has four solid pitches: fastball (40/40), slider (30/45), splitter (40/45) and forkball (40/45). A fifth, his changeup (20/25) is still a work in progress. -------- 13th Pick – Wellington Athletics: SS Mac Medley (20/51) – contact (30/45), gap power 30/45) and eye (25/45). 19-years old; 5’-9”, 160 lbs.; spray hitter; Hits RH/Throws RH An average prospect with decent but not great hitting ability. Has outstanding speed and should be a competent fielder. -------- 14th Pick – Kingston Pelicans: IF Wen-huan Liu (22/70) – contact (40/50), gap power (40/45) and eye (45/60). 22-years old; 6’-2”, 21 lbs.; normal hitter; Hits RH/Throws RH The 22-year old from Taiwan has the potential to be a clean-up hitter with good power potential and patience at the plate. Defense and speed are not strengths, however. -------- 15th Pick – Braeland City Monarchs: SP Harold Barr (20/63) – stuff (30/35), movement (45/60) and control (30/60). 19-years old; 5’-10”, 165 lbs.; groundball tendency; 86-88 Mph velocity; Hits RH/Throws RH The second player from New Jersey selected, Barr has OK stuff and movement, but with excellent control. Throws three pitches: fastball (35/40), curveball (25/40) and splitter (35/45). -------- 16th Pick – Stratford Barons: SP Alberto León (21/66) – stuff (30/35), movement (55/65) and control (30/50). 20-years old; 6’-3”, 195 lbs.; groundball tendency; 84-86 Mph velocity; Hits RH/Throws RH The pitcher from Panama has OK stuff to go along with top-notch movement and above-average control. His best pitch is his changeup (35/55) to go with an OK fastball (35/35) and slider (35/35). --------

1942 All-Star Game: The East Bucks the Trend ![]() -------- Wolseley, Oxford (BP) – For the first time in the young league’s history, the visiting team won the All-Star Game, as the Eastern League held on to defeat their Western League counterparts 4-3 at Satchel Paige Park in Wolseley. The Easterners now lead the annual series 3 games to 2. Also for the first time, the game was not a sellout, despite the agreeable weather (partly cloudy, 65 degrees F). Satchel Paige Park can normally hold 30,750, but organizers confirmed that the attendance was closer to 27,300. The United Leagues were anticipating a drop off in attendance, however, not only for the all-star game, but at all their games due to the nation’s focus on supporting the war effort at home. Nevertheless, the game went off without a hitch to the enjoyment of not only those in attendance and those listening on local radio, but also to Braelander military personnel serving across the South Pacific on Braeland’s fledgling armed forces radio service. For those that missed the original broadcast, here are the scoring highlights: Top of the 1st: CF Terence Durney leads off with a single off of SP Oscar Burress. Durney then reaches 3B on SS Jake Walker’s 1-out single. 1B Jim Friend immediately follows with a sac fly to left field allowing Durney to score the game’s first run. Eastern All-Stars 1 – Western All-Stars 0 Top of the 3rd: With SP Leo Chesters on the mound, Jake Walker leads off with a triple. Jim Friend promptly doubles, scoring Walker. Following two quick outs, Chesters is replaced by SP Myung-gu Son. Son promptly surrenders a triple to 3B Derek Sakurai, scoring Friend. Eastern All-Stars 3 – Western All-Stars 0 Top of the 6th: SP Nick Paddock starts the inning for the West. A walk to PH Katsunan Chikafuji, a single by PH Scott Kessler and a walk to PH Matthew Shelley quickly loads the bases with nobody out. PH Adam Ashley then drives in Chikafuji with a sac fly to left field, adding to the Easterners lead. A pitching change and a double play end the inning before any further damage is done. Eastern All-Stars 4 – Western All-Stars 0 Bottom of the 6th: The Westerners get on the board thanks to a 1-out solo shot by CF Zak Kidd, off of SP Ryan Borden. Eastern All-Stars 4 – Western All-Stars 1 Bottom of the 8th: RP Larry Parrish takes the mound and gives up a first pitch single to PH Clint Jones. Jones is replaced by PR Yoshino Ito. With one out, Parrish gives up back-to-back singles to SS Rubén Sànchez and PH Nicky Willis, allowing Ito to score and Sànchez to reach 3B. PH Merlin Teeters then grounds out (6-3), scoring Willis to get the Western League All-Stars to within one. In the bottom of the 9th, SP David Cooling gets the Western Leaguers to go down in order, with a 6-3 ground out and back-to-back strikeouts, to end the game. Eastern All-Stars 4 – Western All-Stars 3 Brunswick’s Derek Sakurai won Player of the Game honours, going 2-3 with 1-3B, 1 RBI and 2 BB. -------- Here are the complete All-Star rosters: ![]() ![]()

Eastern League: Suns, Legends Lead the Way ![]() ![]() ![]() -------- ![]() The Embro Suns have finally found consistency. Back-to-back 16-10 months, along with 17-8 and 20-6 months have kept the Suns alone in first place in the East all season. Offensively, they lead the League (.280/.362/.408 – 1st/1st/1st) and the starting pitching is solid (3.30/3.13/4.76 – 2nd/2nd/8th). They are formidable on defense as well (.702 – 2nd). It looks like a team that has been unable to sustain success throughout a 154 game season in the past may have finally figured it out. Seven Suns were selected to the All-Star roster: SP Pete Allison (1st selection), SP Chris Sappington (1st), SP Colm Soper (3rd), RP John Palm (4th), 1B Jim Friend (3rd), OF Terence Durney (5th) and RF Paul Hooks (4th). Top Position Player: If 27-year old 1B Jim Friend (.333/.421/.538, 17 HR, 107 RBI, 80 R, 67 BB) is not the most feared hitter in the United Leagues right now, he must be very close to the top of the list. Over the past two months, he has won three Player of the Week honours and both Batter of the Month awards. He won a Player of the Week award and a Batter of the Month award in December as well. Top Pitcher: The rotation has been solid all season, which no doubt explains the Suns’ ability to remain in top spot. No. 3 SP Pete Allison (17-5, 2.56 ERA, 1.15 WHIP), who has enjoyed only one season with an ERA below 4.00 thus far in his six season in the ULB, is having a sensational season. He was selected to his first all-star game and earned Pitcher of the Month honours in January. No. 1 SP Colm Soper (14-6, 2.82 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) was terrific in December, going 5-1, 1.70 ERA, 27 K and 13 BB. Key Injuries: SS Gary Watkinson (.319/.432/.394, 1 HR, 27 RBI, 37 R, 42 BB) is having a devil of a time remaining healthy. The 34-year old has been out of the lineup for nearly 9 weeks since the start the season. Now, he will miss an additional 5 weeks, after being diagnosed with back spasms on January 27. Key Trade #1: On December 9, Embro acquired 34-year old 3B Kian Meadmore (54/54) from the Queensland Eagles. In return, the Eagles received 20-year old minor leaguer RF Héctor García (23/36). Knee-jerk reaction: Meadmore is a 4-time all-star and 2-time top fielder award winner, but at 34 years old, his time is now. He doesn’t hit for high average, but still has plus-plus power and is very patient at the plate. He should solidify second base and the No.6-7 spot in the lineup. García, a minor league signing for Embro out of Venezuela back in 1937, is all offense and little defense. He can make good contact and hit one out of the ballpark once in a while, but that’s about it. He projects to be a bench player. ![]() Key Trade #2: On December 26, Embro acquired 31-year old C Denzel Fontaine (30/30) from the Balmoral Giants. In return, the Giants received 19-year old minor leaguer CF Alex Turner (21/54). Knee-jerk reaction: Needing a seasoned back-up catcher, the Suns went out and acquired Fontaine, an average hitter and fielder, nothing more. Turner is a former third round pick from 1940 is nothing special at the plate, but has exceptional speed. His talents are all trending upwards, however, so he may develop into a solid player one day. Even so, he immediately gets lost in Balmoral’s incredibly deep farm system. ![]() Key Trade #3: On January 6, Embro acquired 25-year old RP Yin-ti Shih (79/80) from the Queensland Eagles. In return, the Eagles received five minor leaguers: • 21-year old 2B Brian Pothecary (22/34); • 20-year old LF Santo Fuentes (22/23); • 22-year old CF Dan Cushing (22/23); • 21-year old SS Douglas Paget (22/46), and • 21-year old 1B José Cruz (21/22). Knee-jerk reaction: Embro looks to shore up its struggling bullpen with the trade for Shih. Shih’s stuff is not great, but his off-speed stuff is excellent and is pretty consistent with his control. In exchange, the Eagles essentially get a bunch of warm bodies, with Paget being the most highly rated. Still, he is simply average and none of them will make a dent in Queensland’s prospect depth. ![]() -------- ![]() The Brunswick Legends is the only team that so far has been able to keep pace with the red-hot Suns in the East. They remain in striking distance of 1st place and enjoy a comfortable lead in the wild card. The Legends were outstanding in December, but cooled off considerably in January. That drop off perhaps reflects the loss of team leader OF Mark Elston, who went down to injury in mid-December. He is gone for the season, and the Legends will need to find a way to replace his bat in the lineup. The offense has been second only to Embro (.278/.351/.402 – 2nd/2nd/3rd), while their pitching, particularly the rotation, has been top notch (3.16/3.00/4.15 – 1st/1st/4th). Defensively, they are the best in the East (.716 – 1st). Six Legends made the All-Star team: SP Anastasio Rodríguez (2nd), C Maurice Evans (1st), 1B Stuart Bentham (2nd), 3B Derek Sakurai (2nd), SS Matthew Shelley (3rd) and LF Harry Chatwin (1st). Top Position Player: After Mark Elston, there is a bit of a drop-off in production. But SS Matthew Shelley (.344/.406/.441, 3 HR, 61 RBI, 54 R, 44 BB) has been the most consistent offensively before missing two weeks in January due to a dead arm. Rookie LF Harry Chatwin (.278/.350/.410, 10 HR, 36 RBI, 71 R, 45 BB, 23 SB) continues to impress, earning his first all-star selection and his second Rookie of the Month award in December. Top Pitcher: 25-year old LHP Anastasio Rodríguez (13-3, 1.80 ERA, 1.01 WHIP) has been phenomenal this season, winning Pitcher of the Month honours for December and going 3-2, 1.53 ERA, 53.0 IP, 21 K, 11 BB in January. Key Injuries: RF Mark Elston (.373/.495/.582, 6 HR, 30 RBI, 43 R, 37 BB) ruptured his Achilles tendon in a game back on December 13. He is gone for the season (4-5 months). Key Trade: On January 4, Brunswick acquired 25-year old 1B Stuart Bentham (74/77) from the Cobourg Red Stockings. In return, Cobourg received five minor leaguers: • 22-year old RP Brent Nix (68/80 – 14th overall pick in 1939); • 18-year old CF Kian Morgan (21/66); • 23-year old 2B Damien Dyson (23/23); • 20-year old 2B Jae-keol Lee (21/23), and • 20-year old LF Jorge Rodríguez (22/29). Knee-jerk reaction: A two-time all-star, Bentham gives the Legends an exciting offensive player that could help fill in the gaping hole that the loss of Mark Elston represents. Elston is rated the 2nd overall position player in the United Leagues right now and his loss will surely be felt. Bentham will bat No. 3 in the lineup and has big shoes to fill. Meanwhile, Cobourg gains a very promising relief pitcher that has the tools to be a stalwart in the bullpen for years to come, but he has yet to put it together. Morgan, a 3rd round pick from 1941, is a solid centerfielder and has excellent speed and base-stealing abilities. If he can continue to improve in making contact, he should be a solid major contributor. ![]() -------- ![]() The Stratford Barons are quickly finding out that being the defending United Cup champions doesn’t mean a whole lot to their competition. The Barons find themselves 5.5 games back of the wild card and if not for a 9-game winning streak to end the month of January, would likely have fallen to 4th place in the East. Despite acquiring more firepower in the offseason, in the likes of Steven Winstanley and Ben Watson, as well as SP Darwin Monday, the offense has been only average (.272/.346/.398 – 4th/4th/4th). Their pitching has been solid (3.65/3.73/3.18 – 3rd /3rd/1st), but that doesn’t appear to be enough this season in the highly competitive East. Darwin Monday has not panned out and the player Stratford gave up to get Monday, namely 3B Terry Maxwell, is having his best season in Kingston. The Barons are third in the East defensively (.697). Ten players were selected to the All-Star roster: SP Ryan Borden (2nd), SP Joel Fearn (4th), RP Bradley Cowell (1st), RP Larry Parrish (4th), C Gavin Hurley (4th); 1B Don Adkins (4th), 2B Rhett Curnow (3rd), SS Jake Walker (3rd) LF Steven Winstanley (2nd) and CF Ben Watson(1st). Top Position Player: SS Jake Walker (.306/.401/.459, 6 HR, 57 RBI, 69 R, 62 BB) has so far been Stratford’s most consistent player, when you consider defense. 2B Rhett Curnow (.357/.408/.495, 7 HR, 49 RBI, 63 R, 37 BB) leads the team in a number of offensive categories, but has been horrendous in the field (-10.2 ZR, .947 EFF). Walker has been somewhat better thus far (-2.2, .986). Walker is currently rated the top player in the entire United Leagues. Top Pitcher: LHP Joel Fearn (17-5, 2.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) continues to be Stratford’s top pitcher this season, even if he tagged as the No. 2 starter in the rotation. In December and January, Fearn combined for 8-3, 3.26 ERA. Key Injuries: After an uneven start to the season, SP Darwin Monday (8-8, 4.28 ERA, 1.45 WHIP), is lost for the season, due to shoulder inflammation suffered on January 24. RF Steven Winstanley (.273/.374/.399, 9 HR, 51 RBI, 52 R, 50 BB) got bit by the injury bug a second time this season. Winstanly strained an abdominal muscle back on January 20. After suffering a setback, he should be back in 4 more days. -------- ![]() Look out – here come the Braeland City Monarchs. After a mediocre start, the Monarchs were the hottest team in the East in December and January, winning 33 games and moving up from 6th place to 4th in the standings. They still trail the Legends by a sizable margin (8.5 games) for the wild card, but if the Legends falter, Braeland City could make things interesting in February and March. While the offense has held its own in the tough East (.277/.350/.403 – 3rd/3rd/2nd), their pitching has actually improved (3.97/3.94/4.21 – 5th/5th/7th). But the Monarchs will need to kick it into high gear to have a real chance at realizing a playoff spot. Improving their defense wouldn’t hurt either (.679 – 7th). Six Monarchs were selected to the All-Star Game: SP David Cooling (3rd), SP Lenny Freke (4th), SP Max MacColl (4th), SS Adam Ashley (3rd), LF Scott Kesler (3rd) and CF Jay Atwood (3rd). Top Position Player: 33-year old LF Scott Kessler (.320/.404/.502, 11 HR, 57 RBI, 63 R, 45 BB) has been the Monarchs’ top player thus far, although he cooled off just a little in January (.261). But SS Adam Ashley (.257) and CF Jay Atwood (.188), Braeland City’s other top players, also saw their production ease up in January. Top Pitcher: SP David Cooling (16-6, 2.68 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) won the Satchel Paige Award last season, and he is having another great season in 1941, going 9-2, 2.36 ERA in Dec/Jan. Key Injuries: IF Finlay Ridd (.258/.333/.293, 1 HR, 19 RBI, 26 R, 29 BB) tore a posterior cruciate ligament while running the bases in a game back on December 13. He is gone for the season. Key Trade: On January 8, Braeland City acquired 30-year old SP-LHP Max MacColl (70/70) from the Queensland Eagles. In return, Queensland received four minor leaguers: • 21-year old RP Roman Davis (57/80– 12th overall pick in 1939); • 24-year old 2B Rick Quinn (23/52); • 19-year old RP Isko Alsonzo (21/55), and • 22-year old CF Callum Conroy (27/33). Knee-jerk reaction: MacColl is a 4-time all-star and a former 22-game winner looking to bounce back after missing nearly 10 months due to a broken bone in his elbow back in November 1940. When he is on his game, he is a nightmare to batters and a favourite of catchers due to his solid control. Davis is as good a relief pitching prospect as they come and should be Queensland’s go-to fireman for years to come. But the rest of Queensland’s haul is rather light. The players all have some ability but their major league prospects are underwhelming at best. All-in-all, a rather light return for MacColl. ![]() -------- ![]() The Queensland Eagles have given up the ghost. On December 3, the Eagles set their team focus from ‘neutral’ to ‘rebuild’ and proceeded in earnest to blow things apart, completing no less than five trades before the January 31 trade deadline. Team stalwarts, namely 3B Kian Meadmore, SP Max MacColl and SS Katsunan Chikafuji are all gone. In the midst of all the flux, the Eagles’ offense was not the worst around (.268/.339/.373 – 5th/5th/6th); neither was their pitching (3.82/3.79/4.13 – 4th/4th/3rd) or defense (.692 – 5th). In fact, Queensland was one of the hottest teams in the Eastern League in January. But February/March may tell a different tale. Three Eagles were selected to the All-Star roster: C Dave Wilson (3rd), SS Katsunan Chikafuji (5th) and LF Terry Aspden (3rd). Top Position Player: C Dave Wilson (.334/.387/.470, 9 HR, 65 RBI, 34 R, 32 BB) is a legitimate star, ranking behind only Fort Richmond’s Danny Trowbridge as the United Leagues top catcher. If he was better defensively, (-4.5 ZR, .870 EFF), he might challenge that ranking. Top Pitcher: The pitching was up and down over the past two months, but 35-year old SP Henny Akerval (11-4, 3.51 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) was the most consistent, going 7-2, 3.24 ERA. Back on October 26, 1941, Akerval tied the United Leagues record for strikeouts in a single game. He struck out 12 against the Cobourg Red Stockings in a 3-2 victory. Key Injuries: None. Key Trade: The SS Katsunan Chikafuji trade will be discussed in the Kingston Pelicans recap. -------- ![]() Like Queensland, the Wellington Athletics have made the decision to rebuild, determining that they are unable to compete in the East this year or anytime soon. Unlike the Eagles though, they did not make any trades before the deadline. But they will have to make some tough decisions soon, as they have the worst ranked farm system in the United Leagues (tied with Cambria, who is a decidedly ‘win now’ club). Neither their offense (.258/.325/.376 – 7th/7th/5th), nor pitching (4.05/4.03/4.15 – 6th/6th/5th) nor defense (.680 – 6th) inspires much confidence that they can realistically challenge for a playoff spot, so a rebuild isn’t a bad call. Wellington was not represented at this year’s all-star game, the first time that has happened in the United Leagues. Top Position Player: 29-year old 2B Brian Main (.272/.345/.404, 5 HR, 54 RBI, 64 R, 44 BB, 5 SB) is one of Wellington’s top players (along with 3B Ryley McLarnon) and was his team’s most consistent position player in December/January. Top Pitcher: The rotation had its ups and downs the past two months, but 30-year old SP Derek Cawley (8-1, 2.53 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) has quietly put together a solid season from the No. 5 spot. In December/January, he went 6-0, 2.48 ERA in 5 starts. He began the season working out of the bullpen. Key Injuries: None. -------- ![]() The Cobourg Red Stockings returned to their losing ways, especially in January, as the ‘Bled’ Stockings bade farewell to another talented player when they shipped Stuart Bentham to Brunswick on January 4. Needless to say, there will be a lot more losing to come before things get better. Meanwhile, Cobourg’s 5 rookies continue to adjust to the majors: CF Cliff Jorden (.261), C Neil Voigt (.220), 2B George Simpson (.212), SS Júlio Gonzáles (.294) and SP Ramón Ramírez (6-9, 5.79 ERA). With the acquisition of RP Brent Nix (1-3, 1 SV, 5.86 ERA) in the Bentham trade, Cobourg now has six rookies in the lineup. The offense continues to suffer (.249/.308/.344 – 8th/8th/8th), while the rotation has shown modest improvement (4.93/5.23/3.45 – 7th/8th/2nd). Their defense, however, has not kept pace in the East (.677 – 8th). Cobourg was not represented at this year’s all-star game, although Stuart Bentham would have been their lone representative, if he had not been traded to Brunswick only days before the game. Top Position Player: It must be tough for 32-year old 2B Matthew Lane (.298/.390/.437, 4 HR, 34 RBI, 27 R, 40 BB) to see so many of this teammates head for greener pastures while he remains with lowly Cobourg. But the original Red Stocking and 3-time all-star plugs along, and was his team’s most consistent player in December/January. Top Pitcher: Not much to choose from. Case in point, RP Tom Mayor (1-0, 2.77 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) has been fairly consistent pitching out of the bullpen this season. In January, he went 0-0, 1 SV, 0.77 ERA in 11.2 IP, but went 0-0, 2 SV, 6.52 ERA in 9.2 IP. Key Injuries: None. -------- ![]() The Downie Chiefs have swerved from the center of the road and headed straight to the ditch this season, as they boast the worst record in the entire United Leagues. But that’s not to say there haven’t been any highlights to speak of. But still, the offense (.265/.325/.360 – 6th/6th/7th) is in serious need of a talent infusion, and the pitching (4.96/5.11/4.20 – 8th/7th/6th) is nothing to write home about either. Defensively, they improved to 5th (.695). 1B William Tozer (2nd) was Downie’s lone representative at this month’s all-star game. Top Position Player: 23-year old CF Sean Murchie (.276/.303/.328, 1 HR, 27 RBI, 33 R, 16 BB, 15 SB) will get the nod this time around, as he won Rookie of the Month honours in January. Murchie was Downie’s 8th overall pick in 1940. Top Pitcher: 30-year old SP Reece Abberley (9-11, 4.59 ERA, 1.37 WHIP), has seen his ERA improve with each passing month (6.29 to 3.23). However, it was his performance against the Wellington Athletics back on December 21 that gets him an acknowledgement here. Abbeley pitched the second no-hitter in ULB history, defeating the Athletics 6-0 on 2 K and 3 BB in Wellington. Fun fact: both no-hitters were pitched by Downie Chiefs pitchers. Back on February 7, 1938, Bradley Paris no-hit the Wolseley Unions. Paris now plays for the Queensland Eagles. ![]() Key Injury: RF Harrison Brooks (.286/.394/.446, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 10 R, 10 BB) suffered a broken kneecap back on October 25. He is out for 4-5 more weeks. Key Trade: The RF Francis Pynchon trade will be discussed in the Sherburn Tigers recap. -------- ![]()
