National League Player of the Week
Recently acquired pitcher Bill Bernhard is adjusting nicely to being a part of the Boston Beaneaters. On the week, Bernhard went 2-0 and did not an earned run to pick up National League Player of the Week honors.

Baltimore & Boston Trade Pitchers
After praising the AI for a recent trade, I am struggling to see the value of the AI making this particular trade. Boston picked up Ed Siever in exchange for sending pitchers Ed Murphy and Harry McNeal (#19 ranked prospect) to Baltimore. While Siever is a decent pitcher, I am not seeing significant upgrade over Murphy that would warrant parting with a top-20 prospect.

Games 102-104: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Boston Americans
Good News: Boston is on a roll, as they completed another sweep.
Bad News: They made up no ground on the 1st-place Tigers. Game 102: The Boston Americans (58-44) topped the Milwaukee Brewers (45-57) by a 3 to 1 score. Pitcher Noodles Hahn (16-12) picked up the win, allowing just 1 earned run on 5 hits and 1 walk, striking out 7 to finish with a Game Score of 79. Boston's offense was sparked by Bill Lange (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Run) and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4, Triple, 2 RBI). Bill Dinneen (13-11) was saddled with the loss, giving up 3 earned runs on 8 hits and 1 walk, striking out 9 for a Game Score of 62. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #17 / Career: #17) Game 103: Not to be outdone by his teammate, pitcher Jesse Tannehill helped the Americans (59-44) top the Brewers (45-58) by a score of 3 to 1. Tannehill (16-9) gave up 1 earned run on 6 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5 for a Game Score of 75. Tannehill also helped himself with a fine day at the plate (1 for 2, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI). Brewers pitcher Frank Owen (13-13) pitched well in the loss, giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk for a Game Score of 61. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #17 / Career: #17) Game 104: Boston (60-44) jumped out to a quick and never looked back, as they topped Milwaukee (45-59) for 8 to 0 victory. Pitcher Cy Young (14-11) arguably had his best game of the year, scattering 6 hits on his way to an 11 strikeout performance that netted him a Game Score of 86. The Americans were also dialed in at the plate, as Bill Lange (4 for 5, Double, Triple, 3 Runs, 2 RBIs), Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 4, 2 Doubles, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), and John Farrell (2 for 5, 2 RBIs) smacked the ball to the joy of the hometown fans. Brewers pitcher Jack Sutthoff was knocked out of the game after just 3 2/3 innings pitched, allowing 7 earned runs on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 14. Frank Killen respectfully covered the final 4 1/3 innings. Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #12 / Career: #12)

Boston Trades Anderson for Esper & Stuart
Because it looks like the Americans will not be able to catch up to the Tigers for the American League pennant, I have started looking at some minor trades involving reserve roster players. The first trade sees Boston sending relief pitcher Varney Anderson and a 15th round draft pick to the Brooklyn Superbas in return for relief pitcher Duke Esper and second baseman Bill Stuart.

Baltimore Sends Donahue to Boston
The second trade of the day for the Americans saw the team send shortstop Tom "Honest Tom" Niland to Baltimore in exchange for catcher Jiggs Donahue. Because Boston is heavy in catcher's depth, Donahue will go to the reserve roster in preparation of next season's minor leagues.

Game Performance Spotlight: Bill Donovan
"Wild Bill" Donovan was masterful in Cleveland's 10 to 0 victory over the Brewers. On the day, Donovan tossed a 1-hit shutout, striking out 13 while not allowing a walk; Game Score of 98.

Philadelphia Eliminated From Playoffs
It comes as no surprise, but the Philadelphia Athletics were officially eliminated from the American League playoffs. With a current record of 40-70, sitting 31 games behind the 1st-place Tigers, the Athletics are ready to put this season behind them.

Games 105-107: Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Americans
Boston took 2 of 3 games from the Orioles. Great to see the team playing so well, but the surge may be a little too late to catch the Tigers.
Game 105: This was a disappointing outing for Boston pitcher Fred Klobedanz, as the Orioles (41-64) topped the Americans (60-45) by a score of 8 to 2. Klobedanz (14-11) lasted 7 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits and 4 walks for a Game Score of 33 in the loss. Effie Norton came in to relieve, finishing up the final 1 1/3 innings. Christy Mathewson (9-17) picked up the win, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5 for a Game Score of 72. Baltimore's offense was led by Billy Maloney (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Harry Davis (2 for 5, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), Jesse Burkett (2 for 4, 2 Runs, 1 Walk), and Roy Thomas (2 for 4, 2 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk). Player of the Game: Christy Mathewson Game 106: Trailing by a score of 4 to 2 heading into the bottom of the 9th inning, Boston (61-45) stormed back to tie the game and send it into extra innings were they topped Baltimore (41-65) 6 to 4 following the dramatic walk-off homerun by Fred Clarke. Noodles Hahn (17-12) picked up the win, allowing 4 runs (1 earned) while striking out 6 for a Game Score of 73. Jesse Hoffmeister, John Farrell, Frank Chance, and Win Mercer each had 2 hits for the Americans. Willey Piatt (9-15) took the loss for the Orioles after giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 51. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #18 / Career: #18) Game 107: A rather uneventful game that saw Boston (62-45) get out to an early lead and do just enough to get a 4 to 3 win over the Orioles (41-66). Jesse Tannehill (17-9) picked up the win by tossing a complete-game 7 hitter in which he allowed 3 earned runs while striking out 6; Game Score 67. The Americans offense came from Fred Clarke (1 for 3, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), Jesse Hoffmeister (1 for 2, Double, 2 Runs), and John Farrell (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Walk). Baltimore pitcher Ed Doheny (9-12) took the loss, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks; Game Score of 52. Jesse Burkett (3 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Jimmy Bannon (2 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), and Jimmy Collins (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #18 / Career: #18)

Games 108-110: Boston Americans vs. Detroit Tigers
Well, if Boston was going to make a serious run for the top AL spot, now was the time to show they were capable of dethroning the leader. Playing well, the Americans took 2 of 3 games from the Tigers to close the gap slightly, but it feels like this might be a little late to matter.
Game 108: A pitcher's battle between Detroit pitcher Nixey Callahan and Boston hurler Cy Young, this game took extra-innings for the Tigers (71-37) to prevail over the Americans (62-46) by a score of 2 to 1. Callahan (15-10) allowed just 1 earned run on 8 hits and 1 walk for a Game Score of 76, while Cy Young (14-12) took the loss after allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 68. Jack McCarthy, Charlie Hickman, and Hobe Ferris each had a multi-hit game in the win. Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Double, Triple) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Nixey Callahan Game 109: Boston (63-46) jumped out to an early lead and then had to hang on during an exciting 9th inning to top Detroit (71-38) 4 to 3. Fred Klobedanz (15-11) picked up the win, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 4 walks; Game Score of 59. John Farrell (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Run), Frank Chance (2 for 4, 2 Runs), and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 4, Double, 3 RBIs) had a nice day at the plate. Doc White (18-11) took the loss after allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits over 8 innings; Game Score of 63. Clay Fauver pitched the final inning; allowing 2 unearned runs. Mike Dolin (2 for 3, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Walk) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Fred Klobedanz (Season: #10 / Career: #10) Game 110: It took 10 innings, but Boston (64-46) topped the Tigers (71-39) by a score of 6 to 4. Noodles Hahn (18-12) garnered the win by allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits, striking out 10 for Game Score of 70. The Americans got some nice hitting from Win Mercer (3 for 5, Double, 4 RBIs), Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 3, Double, 2 Runs, 2 Walks), and Fred Clarke (1 for 3, 3 Runs, 2 Walks, 1 Stolen Base). Togie Pittinger (18-10) was tagged with the loss after allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 12 hits and 4 walks; Game Score of 47. Charlie Hickman (3 for 4, Double, 1 Run) and Mike Dolin (1 for 3, Home Run, 1 Run, 2 RBIs) did all they could to keep their team in the mix. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #19 / Career: #19)

Game 111: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans
Boston closed out the month of July with the start of a series against the Chicago White Sox.
Game 111: This was a tough fought game that featured a combined 24 hits without an extra-bases hit. Boston (65-46) built a small lead early on and then held on to a 2 to 1 win over the White Sox (49-62). Jesse Tannehill (18-9) earned the win allowing 1 earned run on 11 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 64. Chicago pitcher Brickyard Kennedy (8-4) took the loss allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 11 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings; Game Score of 50. Reliever George "Nig" Cuppy pitched the final inning. Boston's offense was led by the newly acquired Jiggs Donahue (3 for 4 - not a bad way to start off his 1st game with the team), Win Mercer (3 for 4, 1 RBI), and Fred Clarke (2 for 4). Chicago was led by Mike Grady (3 for 5, 1 Run, 1 Stolen Base) and John Dobbs (2 for 5). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #19 / Career: #19)

Boston Americans: July 1901
Boston played very well during the month of July, finishing with a 19-10 record, and close the gap with the first place Tigers from 12 games down to 6 games. If the Americans start off strong, it could make for an exciting race for the American League pennant.

Boston Americans: Player Batting Stats
Overall, a solid month for the team batting. John Farrell was the leader with 2.8 WAR, while Frank Chance had the lowest amount with -0.4 (disappointing). Very happy with how Jesse Hoffmeister and Osse Schreckengost put the ball in play, and Fred Clarke was a slugging machine.

Boston Americans: Player Pitching Stats
A great month for Jesse Tannehill and Cy Young, but disappointed to see Noodles Hahn struggle - hopefully he bounces back in August.

Player Spotlight: Luther Taylor
Luther Taylor had quite the game, tossing a 1-hit shutout against the Chicago Orphans to lead his Philadelphia Phillies to an 7 to 0 victory. With a Game Score of 87, what a performance by the anchor of the staff.

Boston Americans: July Player Development
Report from my lead scout provided an update on two (2) players:
Willie Garoni ~ Really nice improvement with Stuff, Movement, and Control. Frank Chance ~ Had a lot of hope for him, but his season stats have been disappointing and now his Contact and Eye ratings have dropped.
