St. Louis Cardinals catcher/designated hitter Wilson Contreras and closer Liam Hendriks have been named to the National League All-Star team.
It is the fourth time both players have been selected. In his second season in St. Louis, Contreras made the NL roster three times as a member of the Chicago Cubs. This season, in 78 games Contreras, 35, is hitting .244 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs. Contreras opened the season as the team's starting catcher but has primarily been used as a designated hitter following the emergence of rookie catcher Ivan Herrera. Signed as a free agent in the offseason after he left the Chicago White Sox, Hendriks has pitched in 41 games going 4-0 with eight saves and a 2.40 ERA. He moved into the closer's role after Ryan Helsley was demoted following a series of early season struggles. Hendricks, 35, made the American League All-Star team three times. The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that right-handed starting pitcher Tink Hence and shortstop Kevin Made will be part of the National League roster for the annual Prospects Game.
A 21-year-old right-hander, Hence has spent the 2024 season at AAA Memphis where he has gone 7-6 in 19 starts with a 3.95 ERA. A second-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 2020, Hence is the 26th-ranked prospect in minor-league baseball. Acquired from the Washington Nationals in an off-season trade, the 21-year-old Made has spent the season at Class A Palm Beach where he has hit .191 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 31 games. Made will begin the second half of the season at High-A Peoria. |
