Ex-Phils Hamner & Jones with Cleveland
Quote:
Wow! A Granny Hamner as an Indian photo is a pretty rare find. When I asked the forum more than a year ago if anyone had a photo of Granny with Cleveland, nobody had any. You wouldn't also happen to have a Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones photo from the 1959 Indians. Like his ex-Phillies teammate Hamner, Jones had a very brief stay with The Tribe. |

4 Giants & a White Sox
These are just five photos I found today on this site Main Line Autographs
I know I have been to it before, but I found a dozen new photos I never saw before including these and I barely checked a fraction of the photos. They either just got a lot of new ones or I have just not been too thorough. Anyway, here are two nice Matty Alou images, Bill O'Dell that is really nice and the best Willie Kirkland with Giants I have ever seen; The Sandy Alomar Sr of the White Sox is excellent also. Say, I don't suppose anyone has an Alomar with the '69 white sox? |

No. Sorry. I do not have Willie Jones. I wish Hamner had his hat on but we take what is offered I suppose. |

Maybe a Jones photo as an Indian exists if there was a revised Indians' yearbook or maybe his photo is in an Indians' program from May or June of '59. Anyhow, thanks for posting the Hamner photo. I'd just about given up hope of ever seeing a photo of him with the Indians. Last edited by KenRaffensberger16; 11-09-2013 at 01:02 PM. |

Al McBean 1970
I noticed on the request list a sleeveless 1970 Al McBean/Pirates.
It won't exist - because he would never have worn the pullovers. They were introduced in mid-July after Three Rivers Stadium opened, but McBean was released by the Pirates on May 18. |

Also, Phil Hennigan, Isn't
The '69-'70 Indians Topps Vault photo on this page of the LHP, identified as Phil Hennigan, is actually a career minor league named Jim Braxton.
THIS is Phil Hennigan. Last edited by Merkle923; 07-27-2017 at 12:23 PM. |

Thanks for the correction and info on McBean
I confess that I did not realize that the pull over jerseys were not worn until July in 1970. Is the story the same for the 1967 Reds? I have seen spring training photos with the sleeveless jersey but have read that the change to the sleeves was done for 1967. Was it too a partial season with both or was the change made before opening day? Thanks again

'67 Reds
Excellent question.
All the photographic evidence I've ever seen suggests the Reds wore their '61-'66 style sleeveless unis and white crown/red brim caps in Spring Training '67, then switched to the sleeved unis and red caps on Opening Day. But this is a curious sequence of photos. 1. A group shot of '67 Reds - among them Ernie Broglio and Aurelio Monteagudo, who were only with the team in 1967 spring training. '66 style shirts. 2. The shot of Monteagudo in the '67 Reds yearbook - in a '67 uniform! I think it's possible that Monteagudo made the opening day roster (which were still 28 men in 1967 with a cutback to 25 around May 15) and that's when they photographed him. Or, there was a team-only photo day late in spring training wearing the new '67 unis. Last edited by Merkle923; 07-27-2017 at 12:24 PM. |

That leads to another question however in line with the Pirates & Reds questions: I have several 1972 Indians Topps Vault photos where the guys are wearing pinstripes and dark hats but the 1972 Indians wore the red hats and solid unis. Did they switch to the new uniforms after spring training? Examples: Phil Hennigan (1972 Topps Vault) obviously from spring training & Phil Hennigan (1972 Topps Vault) obviously from the regular season. Additional: 2 more 1972 Topps Vault Indians from spring training: Denny Riddleberger & Mike Hershberger Last edited by Braves70; 11-09-2013 at 10:42 PM. Reason: red hats |

One more possible uniform change
Again the Cleveland Indians of 1970.
Dean Chance only played for the Indians in 1970. You will notice the uniform on his Topps card (made during Spring Training) and the uniform from the photo are quite different uniforms. Why did Cleveland change uniforms so much back then? Maybe it was a common thing in the late 60s or early 70s to wear your old uniforms in Spring Training and break out the new ones on opening day? |

Are you sure that is Hershberger? It resembles him somewhat but I don't think it is him. I checked BBR and he never played for the Indians organization and in this interview he says that when the Sox released him he didn't play baseball again.

You sure got it right, Hershberger never played for the Indians. It looks a bit like Gomer Hodge. |
