The headline was "To boost Mets and sustain greatness, Max Scherzer needs to adjust to new rules."

To the extent that the following is true, he has no excuse:
Quote:
Here’s Scherzer’s problem, even if, as he said, a league official after the third inning witnessed him washing his hands with alcohol underneath the stands: A memo the league sent to all 30 clubs in spring training, detailing a more aggressive crackdown on sticky stuff, made clear that rosin in certain instances would qualify as an illegal substance.

Scherzer said after he washed his hand, he applied rosin and grabbed sweat before going back out to the mound. The only approved rosin bag, however, is the one umpires inspect before the game and is brought by the game compliance officer to the mound. Any rosin Scherzer used in the tunnel would not have been approved.

“Please keep in mind that player use of rosin always must be consistent with the requirements and expectations of the Official Baseball Rules,” the memo said. “When used excessively or otherwise misapplied, i.e. the gloves or other parts of the uniform, rosin may be determined by the umpires to be a prohibited foreign substance, the use of which may subject a player to ejection and discipline.”

Here's a bit more, from the two umpires involved:
Quote:
Bellino, however, backed Cuzzi fully, telling a pool reporter, “this was the stickiest that it has been since I’ve been inspecting hands, which now goes back three seasons. Compared to the first inning, the level of stickiness, it was so sticky that when we touched his hand, our fingers were sticking to his hand, and whatever was on there remained on our fingers afterwards for a couple innings where you could still feel that the fingers were sticking together. It was far more than we had ever seen before on a pitcher in live action.”
Here's the thing, pure and simple: Ballplayers should not be allowed to apply ANY substance, internally or externally, to enhance their performances.

I totally didn't steal from your post for today's Daily Mets post.

I did the math...you're not paid for the suspended days, so this costs Scherzer 2.8 million dollars, for the ten days.

Your New York Groundhogs!

Marte seems pretty broken too, I'm losing track of who's where especially with the pitcher upheaval. But I saw the name Joey Lucchesi in a story about the pitching so I hope they can take a few more games here in town before the rest of the pitchers catch diseases.

Well, just look at this mess. The only pitchers not listed here and not on the Differentlyabled List (tee-hee) are Lucchesi (yay!) and a certain Seth Elledge, who made 23 relief appearance for the Cards in 2020-21, and who wasn't even a starter in college. He's also 27, and I don't know why I bother with even this many words.

Mets are hosed.

Oh yes, Verlander, wasn't he supposed to come back real soon? Or are we already at the "thoughts and prayers" stage?

Why is being a Mets fan so hard...!?

Clearing out a 2021 game from the depths of the DVR (about time, don't you think?) and I was reminded that, whatever else you might say about Kevin Pillar—

—and I can say a lot, just saying—

—his walk-up song was this:

https://youtu.be/VMnjF1O4eH0

So not completely inexcusable, then.

It's still the best show on and off dirt, always! It's like watching a medical thriller and a sports drama and a comedy sketch show all at the same time!

They sent Reyes down to "stretch out", we'll see how long that holds up. Also I'm going to start watching the SYR roster to see what they do to backfill although it seems like they don't have much else worth bringing up even if they mess with the roster.

Edit: I'm not sure how they can NOT try Bumgarner even if he just goes to SYR for the moment. I still don't think he wants to pitch in Queens but that's what his countryman Catfish Hunter said too until the crosstown guys started throwing bundles of money at him!

Reyes? Which Reyes?

Denyi?

Jose?

Argenis?

I'm not sure which one would give me the least confidence there.

Denyi, although maybe they called Dennys too. Which reminds me, did the MEX start playing yet? Maybe Romo and Bartolo are in playing shape (such as it is)

And a Lucchesi shall lead them? I'll believe it when he does it twice against and against a team not run by AI but nice to bag a win either way.

Good seats available for the game tomorrow... for a 4PM start time? I hope ESPN chokes. We have to pick up our dog at 5 so no luck there. Tonight I'm going down to San Jose for my first of those Giants this year, it was rainy two weeks ago when I had tickets but 30C today down there and sunny!

I absolutely hate national broadcasts and how they rob us of Gary, Keith, and Ron.

...and after John Smoltz is done painting a picture of how he turned the Mets into goulash for 15 years, they cut to some fake blonde sideline dunce that vomits onto us the newest developments of this and that player's Insta.

It then becomes a thought exercise of muting the game, but then i will not get to hear the KNOCK as Pete wallops one to Vallejo.

Pete with 10 homers and eight days still left in April — already a Mets record for most before May.

Edwin Uceta this year was with the Snakes, Tigers, Pirates - all powerhouses of baseball! - and now with the Mets. Because we take everything that can toss it at least 55 feet.

Until three minutes ago, I did not know Edwin Uceta existed.

Kind reminder it's April 22. Last time we pulled Travis Blankenhorns and Johneshwy Fargases out of every nook and cranny, it was at least May.

Oh god this game is depressing.

Except for Wilmer's bomb. I kinda liked that.

Not much happened while I drove down here, which is apparently just as well. I had no idea about Uceta either! Maybe he's one of those meat shield types headed back to the land of Salt Potatoes after the game?

Peterson's poor outing raises rotation questions
Yeah, because we were totally fine before the Giants turned Peterson into goulash yesterday.

The calming thing is that between the Mets and the Raccoons, I now have two rotations that have entirely derailed straight through an orphanage and the city sewers by the middle of April. Yeeey...!!

Those Gnats sure are a tough nut to crack.

Is it too early to get on the Pirates' bandwagon?

There's defeats that you can talk up as moral victories. Yeah, we lost 6-4 to this and that team, but their guy shut us out the last two times and this time we got him a few on the snout and so on.

I'll go out on a limb and say that last night's 9-8 win over the Gnats was a moral L. Ten left on base always sucks, as does blowing a 4-run lead. Lucchesi pitched worse than his final line (which wasn't brilliant to begin with), but there's something to be said about the eighth inning in which they managed to hit THREE Gnats and Lindor ****** a double play grounder all to hell. I barely noticed the counter-rally because I still had my face buried in my paws.

It was horrendous and a split against the Barves would already be a major suckcess.

Funnily enough I said the same thing in my OOTP 24 Daily (Faily?) Mets run, and today's game didn't exactly get them ahead there...
