The Ernie Lush photo in the Facepack and on Lush's B-R.com page actually shows 1910 Cardinals teammate Johnny Lush. Here is the real Ernie, pictured during spring training with the Giants in 1911.

Detroit Tigers from the era of 1958-61 and Topps Vault

That's a 1960 Harry Chiti in the Topps Vault picture, above. Note that he's wearing the (IMO abominable) script "Tigers" home uniform, which was worn in 1960 only, rather than the traditional Olde English "D". 1960 was the year the Tigers changed the script "Detroit' on the road uniforms for block-print, and so decided that maybe the home uniforms should have script, instead.

As I must have written before, this was about as good an idea as firing Ernie Harwell would prove to be, 31 years later, and was likewise remedied by the next season. (Ironically, 1960 was Ernie's first season with the club, coming over from Baltimore.) Also, Chiti played far more for the Tigers in 1960, after coming over from Kansas City in late July, than in 1961, when he spent almost the whole season farmed out to Denver.

Not saying its the case with Harry Chiti, here, but its worth remembering that the bulk of Topps Vault pics were taken during Spring Training when teams would routinely don the togs of the previous season, choosing to save the unveiling of the new for Opening Day. I don't recognize the scoreboard behind Harry, but that sure doesn't look like the Detroit skyline.

A) Look more closely, that's the Tiger Stadium scoreboard behind Chiti. The batting cage camera left and the odd framing of the shot makes it a little less than obvious.

But as you'll see below, another image from the same shoot made it onto Chiti's 1961 Topps card.

Which leads me to B) most of Topps' images were NOT taken in spring training. Generally each team would be photographed (at least in the 1959-1981 era) once in Florida or Arizona and then as many as two or three times a season at Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Philadelphia, the Chicago parks, etc.

A quick question to anyone who might know: Has the Topps Vault now been emptied? I have not seen any new images listed on Ebay in the last 2-3 weeks. Thanks to all for your help!

I have been wondering the same thing Braves70. Also been wondering if between all of us on this forum if we could somehow combine all the vault images to a central location to be sure none of us are missing any that have been listed. Similar to what is done through Game Front with the card downloads. I have all of mine sorted by teams and years that could be zipped to one person to upload for all of us. (What do you think okcochise?)

I haven't been following the Vault as long as most others here. However, I do recall at this same time last year the images dried up. Then they returned bigger and better than ever once we got into the baseball season. IOW, I think its Topps Vault off-season, just as its baseball's off season. They'll toss a few up, here and there. But the regular flow of daily posed baseball images is likely over for a few months.

The idea that the Topps Vault could be empty is inconceivable to me. In your heart, you know there are pictures and players we haven't seen yet.

However, I'd love team-centric zips, if someone has the time to do that.
