Mike Sandlock (Mistake Card).
60 years ago, Topps issued this 1954 Mike Sandlock card
picturing him as a Phillie, a team he never played for. In fact, Mike never played another major league game after his year with Pittsburgh in 1953. He played sporadically in the majors (5 seasons over a 12 year span) and was what we'd call today an AAAA player .He was a 17 year pro (1938-1954). As a Phillies collector I can say that Topps made very few mistakes concerning the Phillies issuing a handful of cards between 1952 and 1955 where players on their cards portrayed as Phillies never actually played for the team and then no further mistakes until 1973 (Tom Haller). Sandlock, known as a catcher who was good at handing knuckleballers played all of the 1954 season for the Phillies' AAA affiliate, then retired that October around the time of his 39th birthday. Today Sandlock, a lifelong Connecticut resident, is 98 and Wikipedia lists him as the 2nd oldest currently living major leaguer. Attachment 319032 Last edited by tnfoto; 01-01-2014 at 10:30 AM.
