Clarence Lee Moore
Clarence Lee "C.L." or "Cool Breeze" or "Dago" Moore was the manager and owner of the Asheville Blues from 1945 to 1948. He was also president of the Negro American Association. I'm sure that the head shot at the left is C.L. The photo on the right was of a man in a suit standing next to the 1946 Asheville Blues team, so I presume that would make him the team owner and manager.

Charlie Neal
A player named Charlie Neal is shown in the uniform of the Cincinnati Clowns circa 1946. The Charlie Neal who became a Los Angeles Dodger would have only been 15 years old at this time, and I don't believe this could have been he. That major leaguer Charlie Neal supposedly made his Negro Leagues debut in 1955 with the Atlanta Black Crackers.
Because I've not been able to find any Charles or Charlie Neal listed in the Negro Baseball Registers or Encyclopedias as being with the Cincinnati Clowns, I'm wondering if the player in this photograph was mislabelled and was instead Ray Neil, who was with the Cincinnati Clowns in 1943. I can't verify that to be the case, but suggest that the current identification be used with caution. Henry Merchant was in the same photo with this "Charlie Neal," and Henry was with the 1943 Cincinnati Clowns. Last edited by Cusick; 12-05-2014 at 06:40 PM. |

Gus Neville
Gus Neville was a pitcher with the Pittsburgh Crawfords in 1930. He is shown here in the uniform of the E. T. Community team, a club which was sponsored by the Edgar Thomson Steel Company, a Pittsburgh area firm. The previous time I mentioned this company I spelled it as "Thompson," which was the way I saw it in a baseball reference, but I've learned that "Thomson" is the correct spelling.

"Charlie Neal" Revisited
The more I ponder the photo of the player whom I found under the caption "Charlie Neal," the more I tend to think he really might be Ray Neil, and that he was mislabelled in the original source. The player who was captioned "Charlie Neal" is shown below on the left. The other photos are all of Ray "Aussa" Neil. There certainly seems to be some resemblance, but not enough of a match to make a firm verification.

Jim Pendleton
James "Jim" Pendleton, SS, is shown in the uniform of the Chicago American Giants. A photo of Jim was posted previously on this thread, but it showed him in the uniform of the Milwaukee Braves, by which time he had become an outfielder.
