One More Pirates

Never photographed your Dad with anybody but Chicago or Pittsburgh - but here's one more Pittsburgh image that just popped up.

Kekich

Honoring 41 years to the week since he and Fritz Peterson traded "lives" - wives, kids, dogs - here is a seldom-seen shot of Mike Kekich with the '77 Mariners.

Peterson and Mrs. Kekich lived happily ever after. Not so for Kekich, who is still waiting for the Wife-To-Be-Named-Later.

This was one of several '70s oddities I found in a second look at a dusty box of photos of varying quality I took long ago. Others follow.

This may be the only color of him with the Texas Rangers. June, 1976.

If you're wondering about the honeycomb effect on some of these - like an ancient curse, only now do I understand why people said "Get the matte finish, not the linen."

Mickey Mahler

This is from that same box that provided all the shots of Jesse Jefferson with the Pirates - same September day at Shea Stadium.

Mahler spent exactly one inning with the Bucs - spread over two games - and was burned for seven earned. I don't think mine are the only color shots of him with Pittsburgh; I believe the rest were destroyed by the team!

Fifteen games with the '81 Mets and not seen often. Not the best photography but at least if they have to profiles they're profiles from opposite directions ;-)

And This Is The Saddest Of Them All

For years, I have been convinced that I have images - mediocre, distant, but clear and recognizable - of two of the Moby-Dick figures of New York baseball photography.

I got a color shot of Dave Kingman with the Yankees in '77 and can find neither the print nor the negative.

I'm also certain I got a shot of Mike Marshall with the Mets in '81 - same thing.

But look not at the slightly rare shot of now-Pirates' pitching coach Ray Searage with the '81 Mets. Look at the foreground. Number 28, with his back to us…is Mike Marshall!

Well that's one less white whale for this poster. Now back to my own personal #1 photo nemesis: Tom Underwood in a color pic for the 1977 Cardinals. As you know he was swapped for Bake McBride. Bake received a proper card from the Topps crew later that print run- yet Underwood received a less than fair photoshoot application....

So somewhere, anywhere in your abundant supply of photos might this exist Merkle?

Wow, two color pictures of Boitano as a Met. They sure beat the hell out of that miserable WIZ photo, which was all I had before.

Boitano

As a lifetime Mets fan, all I had for Danny Boitano (other than the Wiz card, which I absolutely don't count) was a Tidewater card I photoshopped into a Mets cap. I thought about doing the same with a Brewers pic of Boitano (pinstripes), but no moustache...and that just wouldn't be right.

Thanks Merkle. That's certainly a white whale off my list.

Dennis Kinney/Cleveland 1978

I see him on "the" list, too. Pretty odd, given that he opened the 1978 season with the Indians, worked in 18 of their first 56 games (even had five saves) and wasn't dealt to San Diego until June.

I caught him in a night game at Yankee Stadium so these are a little grainy, but they're still better than an artist's rendering.

Bobby Valentine - PIRATES

Here's an obscure request!

I don't remember the details, but I clearly remember Bobby Valentine with the Pirates in Spring Training 1975. I don't think he was a free agent, perhaps attempting to attract the Pirates to trade for him, playing in Bradenton with the Angels' permission?

No matter, I'm hoping there's a (Topps?) Spring photo of Bobby with my Buccos. Does one exist?

Anyone know why he was with the Bucs in '75? He was with Charleston (Bucs' AAA) to begin the '75 season before returning to the Angels.

Changing the subject -- Earl Williams was with the Bucs, Spring ... 1980, I believe it was. ToppsVault images of Earl in black & gold will be beyond appreciated as well!

Thankew,
J
