Phil Mankowski

Do I remember correctly? Was something of him with the '80 Mets on somebody's want list? Found one of mine:

Thanks for the pic! I thought I had posted in the wrong thread so I deleted my original post, but thanks so much for the Forster picture.

Ed Brandt

Does anyone have photos of pitcher Ed Brandt? I stumbled upon his name while researching another player. He's Virtually Unknown today, (perhaps because he died early at age 39 in 1944), but like my screen namesake Ken Raffensberger, Brandt was a very good pitcher who was stuck on some really bad teams. In an 11 year career (1928-1938) , mostly with the Boston Braves (1928-1935), Brandt threw 150 Complete Games, with 18 Shut Outs. He was a workhorse who racked up Innings Pitched and Decisions with season records such as 18-11, 16-16, 18-14, 16-14 and 9-21. He also was a Brooklyn Dodger and a Pittsburgh Pirate late in his career. (Lifetime Record: 121-146, 3.86 ERA).

Quite a few, actually, but here are a couple of snapshots that others might not have seen before. First is 1931 with the Braves, second is 1938 with the Pirates.

Larry Benton

A contemporary of Ed Brandt who had some starring years, but like Brandt is unknown and forgotten today was RHP Larry Benton (Brandt was a lefty).
Benton actually led the National League in wins in 1928, with 25 (for the NY Giants) , but then his next best seasons' win totals tail off considerably to 17,14,14,11,10,10 & 8. Perhaps part of the reason Brandt and Benton aren't remembered was that their best seasons occurred before the start of the all-star game era.
Baseball-Reference.com lists Benson's career mark 128-128 with a 4.03 ERA, although I have an old hardcover baseball encyclopedia that gives 127-128 as his final record. He was basically a winning pitcher who hung around in the big leagues a season or two too long. Benson pitched for the Braves, Giants and Reds between 1923 and 1935.
Do you have any photos of Benton to post?

Minnie Minoso - Early MLB Years

This photo comes from Minnie Minoso's brief time with Cleveland (1949 or 1951) before the 4/30/51 trade to the Chicago White Sox that gave Minnie the opportunity to become an everyday player and a star.

The "Honeymoon Period" between Cuban MLB players and Fidel Castro

After Fidel Castro's take over of Cuba's government in January 1959 there was a brief period between 1959 and 1961 where Cubans playing in America in the majors and minor leagues were free to come and go between Cuba pretty freely. That ended when Castro's ties to the Soviet Union and Communism strengthened and the USA applied diplomatic and trade sanctions. By the offseason of 1961-62 Cuban players were forced to choose between their homeland and life in America.
This photo from November 1959 during the "honeymoon period" featured the two biggest celebtities among Cubans at that time: Fidel Castro and Minnie Minoso. (Source: From National Baseball Hall of Fame Library & Photo Archives).
